I usual go with a balanced character that can wield a wide array of weapons, but if I had to choose something more concrete, I'd say that I often go with the Samurai/Ronin (FF/Disgaea) character

Take a guess. (Hint: look to the left)
The fearsome Banana Phone style of fighting!
Or a offensive mage. I'm going with the former.
Damn right, my Bananarangs inspire dread into the hearts of my enemies!
*cringes in fear*

I like big weapons that maul through damage reduction (if applicable). I like casting spells and crafting my own gear. I like being fast so I can navigate the battlefield, looking for the best flank to take out my enemies. I like subterfuge and winning arguments in dialogue. I like being strong in battle, however, I prefer cleverness to brute strength.

In a DnD setting, there are usually two types of classes I like playing, either a Fighter/Rogue or Fighter/Wizard.

For the rogue build, I would focus on a greatsword for the Fighter feats and the rogue would focus on charisma, detection and trap skills as well as high "use magic item" skill.

The wizard type fighter, would also focus on the greatsword for the fighter class. The wizard class would focus skills on concentration, lore and item creation as well as persuasion skills. He would focus on spells that would augment his fighting ability such as protection, enhancement and summoning spells.

When it comes to video games, any class that gains a massive amount health upon level-ups, attacks that hit often, and has a high defense. If we are talking about D&D and similar games, the rogue or something similar.

Usually any melee class first time around, then caster/range, and then try it stealth. I'm a bit of a completionist haha

I like some magic mixed in with some kind of physical prowess, be it strong melee or a lot of health. Magic is nice and shows that your character's not an idiot while providing versatility, and the physical traits make me feel like my character's not a complete brainiac weenie and could hold his own in a bar brawl.

Basically a Spellsword of sorts if we're talking generics. On WoW, I guess that would fall under Shaman or Paladin, but I play a Shadowpriest... the darkness of it and the mind manipulation aspects were too tantalizing.

Something that can get the living hell beat out of them, dust off their armor, scream their warcry, and go do it again.

I love tanks.

I generally play a smart guy, hit the baddie with a few arrows before going in and bludgeoning them brutally with the nearest blunt or sharp object, like a sword or axe

Hmm..interesting question. Since we're talking RPGs in general, I have to post a question--Do the Fantasy mages also play Sci-fi mage?
Personally, I like being the AoE class, no matter if it's for offensive or defensive purpose. I just like the spectacular visual from conjuring brimstone and firestorm, hail, or soothing holy breeze.
With that said though, I absolutely despise sci-fi equivalent of a mage, whether this be some "hacker" or "force user" or whatever they might name it. I just don't find them appealing. In the more sci-fi setting, I usually go for heavy gunners who lay down suppressing fire and rain mortar rounds on the poor saps on the front line.

Healer or Jack of all trades. If I feel I'm gonna be alone a lot I do the jack cause it leaves less holes. If theres a chance of having others with me I do the healer, It actually goes a long way usually, being able to heal, even if you have a crappy attack the heals will make you outlast anything that can't.

Personally I usually go for the summoner. It's widely regarded a very unpopular class so people want me in their clans and you can usually get some ridiculous summonings when you hit the final few levels.

I'm surprised I haven't seen many "tanks" around. Most people either like to heal, or to hurt.
Actually, I think holding a big shield is also fun. Similar to my love for anything flashy AoE spells, my shield fetish goes a long way. There's nothing more satisfying in a game than raining hell on someone, or straight up bashing them in the face with a shield.

Warrior... I always play warrior.

I played WoW as a prot Tauren warrior. I don't know why, I just prefer the play style of any mellee combat to ranged or especially spell damage. A pity warrior's in LOTR Conquest are so underpowerd.

Magic, but still with decent ability to get up close and kick arse. Stealth is good only if the A.I. is not bullshit sensitive to where you are.

This sounds suspiciously like the thing I usually do...
