I want to say this is the best soundtrack out of all the Final Fantasies, but I just can't. IX is the winner.

Well it depends if it is a soundtrack that pulls you in or one that is enjoyable enough to be played over and over again.

For a convincing world I have to say the Max Payne series, the first one did a better job then the second one but that is mainly because of the destruction of a man's mind. It was done so well, that once I get the cash I am getting some MS points so I can buy it for my 360. The music alone sucks me back into that world years after playing it.

For enjoyable music I have to say Grim Fandago. This is a game in which the music, not the game sold me in purchasing the game. This is the first and only game in which this occurred that the music was so good I couldn't help but go out and buy the game.

There are other great ones out there, but that is my personal favorites. I know there are some great ones that have some great songs out there. This is just the soundtracks start to finish enjoyed. Sure there are more for great soundtracks I enjoyed, but these are the only two that the entire soundtrack I have not ever skipped while listening threw Itunes.

Have I posted here, already? Or was that the other two threads in the past couple of weeks?

Anyway, my answer hasn't changed: Baten Kaitos.

Mass Effect and Half-Life have very different but very good tracks. But I think the Halo series has some of the most beautiful game music I've heard.

Oblivion's soundtrack is very nice. Even Fallout 3's incidental music is great, the few times that you hear it.

Hands down, though, the award goes to the Myst series. Especially Riven and Myst III. Insanely good scores.

I'm surprised that there's been no mention of the Myst III [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEQQ8d3bQ68] soundtrack here. It really is an incredible game with an incredible soundtrack to it. I remember getting goosebumps as I watched the intro to it, just because it was that well directed. Hell, the entire game was like watching a good film.

(edit, whoo, someone else got there in the time that it took me to post this! I agree with them)

And one that's managed to stick in my head, at least, is the soundtrack from LBA2 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3YMfaqvWBg]. My earliest gaming memory which still contains one of the most wonderful little theme songs in existence. Yes, I can still sing the ferryman's song.

And there was the Roman Settling Theme 1 from Settlers IV [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9plP_RSC8U&feature=related], but then you'll all find that one annoying. Myself, I found myself going around school humming it for far longer than was necessary, just because it was catchy. Seriously, click that link, flick directly to 0:45, and then listen to it from there without getting it stuck into your head for the next 3 days. Those who found that annoying, though, should listen to Mayan Standard Theme 1 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVGsYOdVjg4&feature=channel_page].

granado espada/street fighter IV/littlebigplanet
world of goo/superfrog!

faunts at the of mass effect are superb, but they're a band and not just game music.

I'd have to say the music from the old Sierra adventure games which can be found here... http://www.queststudios.com/

And of course, anything by Frank Klepacki (Command & Conquer and other Westwood studios stuff)

Special mentions to Mark Morgan (Fallout), Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Trigger, and the Ultima series (in particular VI and VII)
