Hmmm probably Fallout 3.
Like recently both inFamous and Prototype both really shocked me (inFamous slightly more so) with how good they both are, but in the recent past Fallout 3 has really blown me away the most. It just ticks all the boxes, it has a great story, epic gameplay mechanics and it's so immersive. You feel like you're desperately trying to survive in a desolate wasteland. It's fantastic

In all honesty, I've become somewhat jaded to games. As a graphic artist the CGI never blows me away, from experince in collecting stories it's hard to completly wow me with that, and no gameplay has been so diffrent it changed how I looked at things.

Yet I still recall one thing that for all it's simplicity did blow me away with existance. The clouds and sky in Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast. Oh we had decent Skyboxes for a while in PC games, but this was a console and actualy looked "next gen" for a console.
Alas, that system was the last time I ever really felt "this is a huge step forward in gaming" rather then the current "it's really just more graphics and CPU" sense of growth.

It has to be Braid. The music, the deceptively simple puzzles made difficult or easy by time, the twisted depth of it and the end revelation.

GTA Vice City/San Andreas

Disregarding the violent gameplay, both of those games raised the bar substantially in terms of creativeness. Each game had their shortcomings, but there was not a time where the games weren't fun. It's hard to say that about almost all of the games released these days.

The first time I played Resident Evil 4, I was absolutely blown away by the fact that they just nailed everything (controls, graphics, weapons, enemies).

Mass Effect simply because every time I re-played through it I found something new. My last run through gave me quite a surprise...

How many games do you know of that allow you to defeat a boss through talking? I know I am pretty damn persuasive, but to make a man put a gun to his head with words is pretty surprising.

This week i have bought both Dead Space and Fallout 3 on the cheap for my PS3. Both critically acclaimed games that come under very high recommendation. The latter i have only just begun so can't really comment on but Dead Space i found that although entertaining, didn't really strike me as 'incredible.'

Now most of the time i am quite dubious of hyped games (for example Halo, it's certainly not bad by any stretch of the imagination but i failed to see what was so Earth stoppingly great about it) but lately i cannot honestly think of a recent game where i thought 'Christ, i am so glad i parted with my money for this.' The last game i think did this for me was probably DMC3 or FFX. Now being a student i find less and less time for games but the whole thought kinda makes me wonder if i'll ever be blown away by a game again.

Thoughts?
Coming out of the sewer for the first time in Oblivion. A lot of things about that game didn't blow me away, but the visuals still do.

In terms of unique ideas and soundtrack, Bioshock is way up there. Again, a lot of it is copied almost note-for-note from System Shock 2 (they both have a "Nurse! Hold him down!" recording for example) but a lot of it isn't, and that game has so many fantastic ideas in it that it's a joy to see them all come together.

But in terms of an all-round fantastic gaming experience... y'know, we've come so far technologically and in terms of ideas that it's hard for a game to be great and also truly "original", which is what's needed for "mindblowing". You can get really good RTSs and RPGs and shooters, but they're still just an innovation on what's been done before. So it's hard for them to be "mindblowing" in that sense.
