Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop. I was lucky enough to catch both first episodes in the same night on Adult Swim. I got hooked. I now occasionally use internet sites to go back and watch them again because they're just so damn good. (Along with pretty much any other mature anime with Steven Blum in it. Gonna watch Big O once school's out.)

Gundam, it dealt with some mature themes and was pretty awesome when I was a kid.

Uhm, if by mature you mean "josei" or "senien", then probably Escaflowne. But I did see DBZ uncensored before that soo....
I guess it works because it has a good plot and interesting characters, but that was shonen if I remember correctly, or at least it straddled the borders between shonen and shojo.

In terms of a well crafted plot, well, either Golgo 13 or Gundam Wing.

In terms of violence, Devil Man. That anime was fucked up, and the fact that never batted an eyelid shows that kids are the most callous beings on this earth.

So it can't be mature unless it's uncensored and gory? That's seems rather silly. The first one I considered mature was Full Metal Alchemist.

How is something more mature because it has tits in it?
I agree with you on this, what about naruto?
Naruto's a pretty twisted plot (that most don't know about, 'cause it's Naruto, and it sucks amirite?). I'd personally say that counts, though if you pick it I'd question your age solely because it's not an old anime, so you're either young or new to anime.

I'm not sure which was the first. It was probably Rurouni Kenshin related (the ovas). I seem to recall those being the first I watched that were mature (and rather depressing). If not that, it was Ninja Scroll (hated it) or Akira (liked it/don't remember it too well).

PS: Elfen Lied sucks on so many levels I honestly can't see what anyone sees in it. Yes, I sat through it all and yes, I can stomach violence and gore just fine.

It's when unnecessary violence and nudity are overused on a juvenile level to cover up the lack of story that pisses me off in anime. And yes, despite popular opinion, the story was full of plot holes and really didn't go anywhere. Granted, I mainly pick on it because it's talked up way more than it deserves to be. It's certainly not the worst anime I've seen by a long shot, but it's probably most overrated and the -least- mature (in the literal sense) I've ever watched. Ironic.

Sorry, hearing EL praised redundantly always makes me ranty. No offense meant to those who liked it. I just wish you'd praise it for what it deserves to be praised for. The music and background art, namely.

It was definitely one of the Ghost in the Shell series. They are my favorites. One of the best English dubs I've ever heard.

In terms of complicated and thought out storylines - Evangelion.

In terms of dealing with adult situations but not in a hentai or comical way - Blue Gender.

i am 14 and naruto is the only one I have seen because here in the tv shithole of the world called new zealand, there is nothing of the "mature anime" type. sure we have all the kiddy ones but those dont count. I do remember evangalion, gundam seed, full metal alchemist and eureka 7 were on when I was younger, but they were on so late (cartoon network: adult swim) that I couldnt watch them. I was 8 at the time. now they cut those to have retard central 24/7!
Ouch, that's a damn shame actually. Well, Naruto is a great anime, though in my opinion it's far better in it's native language than the dub. But that's probably just me being a purist.

The first thing to come to mind is Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni but I know that was not my first.

Could have been .Hack//Sign but I also have my doubts it was the first.

But those two are the most memorable.

For some reason, the original Japanese language version always irritated me. Especially the female voices.

Dragon Ball Z was the first but not the one that drew me in. That was Neon Genesis Evangelion. Then I saw Spirited Away. The tale ends here.

Oh, a friend once showed me an episode of Girls Bravo. I think they were definitely appealing to the pocket-mining demographic with that one.

Interesting that you feel that way. I can see what you mean I guess, because in comparison to western voices they are a bit more squeaky. But IMO I'll take the squeakiness with the original product any day, because it's hard for Japanese voice acting to be bad if you don't speak the language, and I don't like how some of the characters sound in English/American.
