There were two articles on Kotaku about the prevalence of the male gaze in comics and games,

http://kotaku.com/male-privilege/
http://kotaku.com/5873885/nerds-and-male-privilege-part-2-deconstructing-the-arguments

The author gives examples of

and he did some research to find some examples of

But he stopped short of describing any kind of female-perspective Power Fantasy character.

So my question is, what would that character look like? How would she act?
Are there any examples of such a character?

And why don't I already know these things?

The funny thing about these kind of threads in gaming forums is that you end up with a bunch of predominantly young male nerds lining up to present our little theories on what we regard as some kind of collective female psyche. It can get just a little creepy at times.

...

So... on that note, here's my guess!

A strong, attractive, intelligent, eloquent and charming individual who can kick arse whenever she deems it neccesary. Does not need to take bullshit from anyone but doesn't act like an anti-social ***** for no reason. Ta-dah!

...

Eh, I'm a guy, I don't know. Maybe some of the resident ladies will deign to enlighten us. I would actually be interested to know.

Honestly I think for a female power fantasy it would be dependant upon the woman. But I think that unlike a male where the power would be brought about mostly in appearance and physical strength for a lot of women the power would be more dependant upon personality.

My personal female power fantasy is my design of Commander Shepard. She can play with the boy's toys and is good at it but that doesn't mean she has to pretend to be a man to do so. She's capable of kicking ass and taking names, but only does it when she has no other choice, instead preferring to be diplomatic and search for peace. It's kind of like Tabatha Coffey says,
Brave
Intelligent
Tenacious
Creative
Honest

So... FemShep, basically?

Yeah, I think we can add her to the list.

Also

Oh, yeah. Seriously read Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn. Perfect example.

Bayonetta, basically. Strong, independent, desired without letting on to any reciprocal desire... and powerful enough to take on God.

So I guess Nightcrawler is kinda the Tali (Mass Effect 2) of the female nerd demographic.

Female power fantasy characters that aren't total jack off material for men as well? How about Nausicaa from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and San from Princess Mononoke? Both remarkably strong willed characters whose epidermis is mostly covered.

Then again, I'm a man.

Every time I think of a strong female I don't look at my games, I look at my friends.

On that note, notice how all the male power fantasy characters are from different game universes whereas the females are from one universe. (not an argument, a fun observation)

Oh, yeah, as a point, i'm pretty sure lieutenant fucking miras is one of the most impressive female characters i've seen for a while. She spends the entirety of space marine actually just kicking ass while still managing to appear like a human being.

I think Veronica from Fallout: New Vegas could fit into the category.

She's strong (being an unarmed character), charming, witty, intelligent (at least when it comes to engineering) and attractive (which is highly subjective but whatever) without showing almost any skin at all.

Of course, I'm a teenage male so what do I know?

Apparently I think of sex every ten seconds or something like that.

Come to think of it this whole concept seems kind of stupid due to everyone having different opinions of beauty and such.

That's because almost none exist. Because women are told they're not supposed to want power fantasy. It's considered pretty much beyond butch. Butch women are considered more or less androgynous. Power is considered by the majority of people in our society, at least subconsciously, as a purely and exclusively masculine and male essence.

Power fantasy also means pure power fantasy. Which is power for the sake of power, and power as equal to worth. Which women are never included in. As women's bodies aren't considered compatible with the attempt to put some kind of quantifiable number or measurement on power(the kind of power as superiority idea that has people debating who is stronger, Goku or Superman, all the time). If they were, they'd be drawn just as muscular as the men for the sake of "pushing human limits" and the imagination of how strong a living being can be. Men are drawn pushing the limits of strength just for the sake of it, women never are.

There are some examples of at least "power fantasy" in mild terms, not "facing the Gods, I can do anything" level of power fantasy. But they're on the rare side. For a female to be part of a power fantasy, they would have to be stripped of anything relevant to their gender, and just be a vessel of power and badassness.

A regular power fantasy already exists in many ways. Male power fantasies, to be honest, can't you really tend to call them Gary Stus? Similarly, the Mary Sue itself is a kind of power fantasy.

That's a plain version.

The next step would be a character most people feel is sufficiently feminine, but sufficiently badass. Such as Revy from Black Lagoon, or the like. Or Tetsuwan Birdy Decode, or the like.

The way it would come equal to how men are represented, women would be these over the top athletes with just as many muscles as the dudes. Not too many of those exist, especially since when they do exist, they're not important characters.

Examples of this would be something like Dragon Ball Z if Goku was a girl. The super saiyan transformations are one of the purest forms of power fantasy in existence. And something like supergirl or superwoman without being a watered down version of superman and more sexualized.

I consider Makoto to be one of the closest real life examples offhand, at least of what a female power fantasy would look like:
It's a fighting game and she isn't an important character. But they aren't sexulaizing her like Cammy, and she's clearly built like a fighter. They aren't afraid to give her huge feet and a determined look that isn't about looking sexy at all. Her facial expressions are to look intimidating, not sexy. And you can reasonably assume she's at least half as muscular as the ridiculously muscles male characters under that gi.

Any show or game centred around a character like this becoming stronger and dominating foes would be a female power fantasy. Through and through. And any notions of her being "feminine" by our standards would have to be thrown out for power for the sake of power. She can be muscular, "ugly", tall, covered in scars, have mechanical body parts. All as long as it's something that serves the purpose of power and not seeming feminine or beautiful.

In general, Makoto, though, looks exactly like a female power fantasy should look like. She isn't make to look like some skinny, puny little thing that can somehow, despite all logic, go up against gigantic muscular dudes who are drawn as big and brawny as possible.

I'd have to chuck a guess and say Alyx Vance from Half Life 2.

I dunno, she just seems to fit the bill as powerful, intelligent and a character with depth.

I don't think any of those really represent my power fantasies, whether we're talking male or female.

or

Both represent different sorts of power fantasies. And you could switch roles too. There are plenty of evil female power fantasies as well as good male power fantasy characters.

See, the difficult thing about this is I don't want to be anything like those guys shown there, too lunky and slow moving with all them muscles getting in the way.
There is no set in stone power fantasy characters for men or women.

As a woman, I think that, yes, it's rather obvious that female power fantasy exists (No, that doesn't make anyone butch. And I say that as someone who once had a butch woman as a girlfriend).

Samus Aran, before Team Ninja completely ruined her, anyone? She's a very good example. A lot of the anger about Samus Aran's derailment was precisely because to many women, she had been a "power fantasy". Her portrayal in OtherM was to many of us as if you'd put Kratos in her stead (complete with pointless ass shots). Male fans of him would shriek over that happening. And they would be right.

There's others.
Here's a personal example: http://www.renders-graphiques.fr/image/upload/moyen/Shogun_Etrian_Odyssey.png
Female Shogun from Etrian Odyssey. Totally my power fantasy. Badass, cuts things to shreds, dual wielding, armor, scary, still long hair. What's not to love? If some djinn would tell me to wish for some sort of power to be a heroine in some story, this is probably how I'd end up as.

Another one were crusaders from Ragnarok Online. I loved playing them, until Gravity turned their promotion into a sexual fantasy for guys, complete with miniskirt and tanktop. That ruined the class for me, and I dropped the game shortly after.

There's actually a lot of examples, come to think of it. How about Lenneth Valkyrie from Valkyrie Profile (or better yet, Hrist)? Competent, responsible, fierce, and hella powerful. Boss battles she fights could be final bosses of other games, and her job's gathering souls of fallen heroes and training them for war. Being a valkyrie and all. Her outfit was also really, really nice and pretty, but also badass.

By the way: the female-perspective Sexual Fantasy you mention would actually be the straight female Sexual Fantasy. There are others ^^

I'm just going to backup my claim about her being at least half as built as the male characters from this game and what I'm talking about by making women look capable for what they do, and not just sexy. And that she's actually built for battle under that gi.
So to go along with her large feet, built legs, big hands, determined expression, and personality that doesn't have anything to do with sex appeal, but a steadfast interest in the martial arts, her arms in this outfit clearly show she is built to be taken seriously as a fighter instead of just "sexy".

That is, she's no Cammy.
