Id settle for any crest that points out to everyone that the family name is "STIMSON" not frigging "SIMPSON". It annoys me so much, people always pronounce my name as Simpson when they read it on a paper, and they spell it Simpson even when I say it extremely clearly.

Family crests are a pretty hilarious Idea. It was so you could tell friend from foe on the battle field by the crests on their shields, or flag of their standard bearer. Finally someone just said "Why don't each side just wear different uniforms?". At which point the use of heraldry began to decline :)

My family actually has a crest. I'll just link a page with the crest/coat-of-arms on it.

So apparently my clan is like best buddies with yours and hates the Campbells as well.

I got one too, a side affect of having Scottish heritage. I give you the crest (Dramatic pause) OF THE MACDONALD FAMILY!

Already got one. I think the lower part means Strong, courageous and swift. I wouldn't change it. I like it. It's pretty spiffy :D
I especially like the random hand grabbing a lizard for no apparent reason...<.<

OT: Being the descendant of an American Indian tribe doesn't lend itself well to developing a family crest...<.<

But if I had one it'd be nothing but hands and lizards... and maybe a turtle... and the turtle is on it's back... and all of the lizards are spewing cotton candy from their mouths... and there should be an A bomb in there too... just because...<.<

So judging by all the comments above, is it just a common thing Europeans to have a crest? I thought only the riches families of Europe had one?
the ones you see with the belt around them are Scottish Clan crests.

pretty much every family indigenous to Scotland has one.

and lol at Campbells and McDonalds turning up in the first page of the thread and squaring off.

MACDonald, not McDonald, MACDOANLD! There's an A! I will not have you associate my proud family with a fast food restaurant!...kidding kidding.

According to the internet this is my family's crest
<img height=350>http://www.irishsurnames.com/coatsofarms/y/young-coat-of-arms-family-crest.gif

No clue what it means.

If I were to make one up I don't know what it'd be, but I may just modify the current one.

I'd replace the three rings with the Playstation Triangle, Circle, Cross, and Square, and the helmet with a Cylon head. It would be an animated GIF so the eye scanner thing would move.

Just to nitpick (because I can) most of these posts are Family Coat of Arms, as opposed to Family Crests. Though both are often referred to as Crests, because most common folk didn't bother learning the difference (zing!).

Anyway, Clan Gordon Crest:

And Coat of Arms:

And selection of mottos:

Bydand (Remaining, Abiding) / Animo non astutia (By courage not craft)

There are 2 more motto's that I know of(Do Well and Let Them Say[US Gordons] / Fear God [Irish Gordons]), but these 2 are the oldest Scottish ones and so probably the originals. Plus I'm an Atheist, so the Irish one doesn't work too well for me. ;)

My family has a coat of arms. It is Azure, three crescents in pale or, between two plates a chief argent. The family motto is "virtute et fidelis."
