What would get you to pre-order a game?

If it's a game I've been looking forward to for a while I'll probably preorder it...assuming it's cheaper than in store...otherwise I don't see the need; I'll just go and buy it the day it comes out (unless there is risk of it selling out, in which case preorder is necessary). Or if they're giving away an awesome bonus with preorders.

A lower price tag or getting the game early, offer it one week early and everyone and their grandma will be preordering that shit.

well, so far I have never pre-ordered a game. I have seen some very awesome things offered for pre-ordering, and I sometimes consider it, but end up not pre-ordering. So I assume nothing will make me pre-order a game in the future.

EDIT: unless they offer something my heart desires...

A free hat in TF2 is what all the Steamheads are thinking but would never admit.

(It is my secret shame.)

If I absolutely want the game. Bonus content and a lowered price do help.

The last games I've pre-ordered:
Civilization V
Fallout: New Vegas
DiRT 3

And I'll probably pre-order Diablo III when it comes out, or at least buy it as soon as I can.

A code to redeem DLC released in the future as a gesture of kindness to a fan.

Seriously, that's a HUGE reason I don't buy games new. DLC down the line.

I'm a huge sucker for real-world trinkets. If it's a game I care about I don't even care if they're that good. Just the feeling of owning a part of that game if enough for me.

I tend to pre-order a game if I am able to get some extra stuff like the soundtrack, collectible items, and/or extra content. Plus, I like knowing that I am going to get a copy and not have to worry about the game selling out before I get there.

Extreme levels of anticipation, caused by (franchise) fanboyism and possibly positive prior experiences with a series or developer. For example, I'm pretty sure I'm going to pre-order Arkham City, and I'm going to place my pre-order on Warhammer 40.000: Space Marine this week. Similarly, it's a safe bet to say I'd pre-order any new installments of Prince of Persia, Legacy of Kain (never going to happen, though) and War for Cybertron.

The extra goodies, and I don't mean DLC or an extra armor or something like that :p
I want a poster, an art-book or a keychain. Something material that I can have in my room.
