What would get you to pre-order a game?

Honestly, it would probably have to be something I'm already a huge fan of. Someone preordered Portal 2 for me as a birthday present, which was awesome. I'd preorder HL3 if it ever came out, or if they made a completely up-to-date Discworld game or something.

I do it for either some kind of special edition or If the store is offering "free" stuff. Like Fallout 3 having things like a poster and cd or a bottle opener.

That's right folks at The Escapist even time-travelers use their forums!

Nothing. I was burned by the crap that was Mass Effect 2. After that I'll never pre-order a game ever ever ever again. Even if Bioware or EA give me my $120 back + some extra stuff I'll never pre-order a game from them or anyone ever again.
This sounds like it could be an entertaining and perhaps even informative story...

What the hell happened that ended up costing you one hundred and dollars?

If its either part of a franchise I already like or looks particularly promising, then I'll pre-order. So far Fallout: New Vegas, Brink and Space Marine have all been preorders. Haven't been particularly dissapointed yet. Skyrim will probably be the next pre-order I make.

A free hat in TF2 is what all the Steamheads are thinking but would never admit.

(It is my secret shame.)
I actually don't understand the hat craze, I've never held an interest in a digital object that I cannot see and doesn't change a game at all as something I NEEDED. I mean when you buy a hat you're basically paying for others to enjoy it rather than yourself. I dunno call me mental but it's not something I get.

OT: I got Mass Effect 2 Collectors Edition...preorder goodies were plentiful, a character with missions, art book, bonus DVD with some videos, a comic, metal case, some free DLC. And the price tag for the C.E. was the same price for the 360 standard edition, so it was kind of a no-brainer.

MW3, the second one came out in 2009
I meant the 3rd one. Finger slipped :(
EDIT: Wasn't that kinda obvious due to the mention of survival?

Pretty much just discounts. That's why all my preorders are from Steam. Every little bit counts!

A collector's edition, on the other hand, would simply need an artbook and I'm set.

It's a combination of "Spur of the moment." and "Why the hell not?". So, I have a pre-order of Rage, which will land me some limited edition stuff. Why? Why not? It looked freaky-cool.

I don't think a lot of people understand pre-orders. I pay 5 bucks to pre-order.. this is 5 bucks I'm paying now that comes off the full retail price, and it garentee's me a copy when the game comes in. I couldn't care less about bonus's like the BF3 Type 33 LMG and DAO-12 Shotgun, cause they'll be available in the game anyway, just like the pre-order bonus's for BFBC2 (AKS-74u and the WWII weapons).

Although I do admit, when MGS: Peace Walker came around, I wish I didn't have a PSPGO so I could get a pre-order Big Boss Bandana... they were awesome. :(

OT: I don't need any bonuses to entice me to pre-order. the fact I can put 5 bucks on it then and GARENTEE I get a copy of it launch day is good enough..

EDIT: looking back at some of the posts, I forgot about Steam pre-orders.. Those I would never do. It's digital Distribution, they'll always have it. Therefore I would never pre-order.

The need to have it on the first day. Really, is there any other reason you need?
