I usually pre-order games that I know that I'll buy, it's a sequel, or it just looks really damn good. Like Brawl, Portal 2, and Skyrim.

If I've been following development of the game for awhile and have been pleased with what I have been seeing so far, I'll pre-order it. If I was a HUGE fan of the previous installment, I'll probably pre-order it.

if the collector's edition around and I have the money for it (and has interesting collector stuff) I'll get it the only reason I missed the balls of steel edition of duke nukem forever and would have bought the one with the roman soldier helmet but I did get the collector's edition of fallout new vegas and plan on getting the collector's edition of elder scrolls skyrim (if they announce one if not I'll still preorder it)

I usually pre-order a game that im interested in if I have the money at the time. That way I dont have to worry about finding money to get it when it comes out. Also, promises of a steelbook always get me interested.

I would only have a chance of pre-ordering it if it was a game I wanted, then on top of that, it'd need feelies (see tvtropes), that'd be enough, if not it'd need an art book I guess, maybe a cheaper price...
I dunno, it's not something i've ever done

Apparently, the ability to play as Robin.

Arkham City will be the first game I bother to pre-order.

Either a game that I really, REALLY want, say, for example, Skyrim. Or some sort of bonus that only people who pre-order get. Like, for example, Skyrim's special map.

Anyone noticing a pattern here?

a great franchise, decent benefits or a huge dedication to the game. (mass effect 3 and Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo 4 will have me for all time) ah yes, and assassins creed revelations as well!

Back in the day: a statue, lunchbox with cool trinkets, or something else really nice.

Now: Not much. Don't have the money to spend.

If it's Battlefield 3...and has wake island.

I don't care if its not a battlefield game, aslong as it has the map Wake Island. Heck it could be a racing game.

As the title says, what would make you pre-order a game?
What do you mean? You speak as though preordering costs more or is in some way inconvenient. I preorder all the time just so I can be sure I'll get my copy. Often you actually get money off for preordering.

Exclusive content. Anything that I'll otherwise have to wait for or wouldn't get at all without pre-ordering. If there isn't any of that, then I don't bother.

Exclusive Pre Order games are a good way to make me resent it. The only thing that really makes me want to pre order a game is wanting to have it the moment it's available.

If Im sure that I want a game well in advance of its release date I'll definitely pre-order it(usually online to save myself the hassel)...any additional shit that will lure in people closer to the games launch is just an added bonus in my opinion!

Knowing I wanna play it on day 1? :p

Got BF3 on preorder, will have Skyrim and TOR too once I see their Collector's Editions (might get one of them, if they're offering something interesting, as I'm really hugely anticipating both games)

To want to pre-order a game, I need to:

a) Be looking forward to it a LOT.

b) Be certain beyond a shadow of a doubt that it's going to be good.

Like...I was on the edge about Deus Ex HR...But then when the leak hit and everyone was saying how it DID live up to the original, I went out and pre-ordered.
