What would happen if Iran and the US went to war?

I think this is a classic case of:
Beware the Industrial Millitary Complex
The millitary and co want money... what a better way to secure funds then from a broke government.

It could likely destabalise the US and possibly lead to its breakup.
They could potentially be "removed" from the UNSC and NATO
Then we could watch as there are many sanctions placed upon Israel by the EU (because of renewed attacks against Palestein {who would be independent because of the lack of the US Vetoing all attempts at becoming a sovreign nation})

Then we would also have a very nasty war within the Middle-east and this could then spread into Asia and Northern Africa (Fighting in the name of Islam) so America can probably kill with a K/D of say 7 to 1. But if they are outnumbered say 20 to 1 then they may have a few problems.

Also then America would probably try to exploit religous tensions throughout Africa leading to large scale conflicts between north and south.. Europe might mannage to maintain neutrality... Asia (China) on the other hand would probably use this as their chance to expand their influence over the rest of Asia... We could then see Japan requesting aid from the US (who won't be able to assist). then we could see Russia using this as an advantage (along with NATO) to assult China ending in:

Hell.

Lets just hope congress is not that stupid

But I'm not holding my breath

Chances are, it would be another bad war, this time with a true mission failure(as in we really lose, instead of a hollow victory like Iraq)

From what I can see, China and Russia are likely taking sides against us for their personal stakes in the area(the oil pipelines), Iran taking political sway in the local area (with relative ease), and the possibility of Iran gaining hold of the bomb, attacking ether US forces or Israel with it.

Not a pretty picture. Unlikely my homeland will win. Also unlikely we'll get much help from the rest of NATO, especially with the public support in Europe lacking greatly to go and help our country. I can't blame them, but I think they are letting pride get more in the way than they realize, which you would think something my country would be more guilty of.

Now I think a more interesting topic would be, what if the USA doesn't do anything? What will happen? Will Iran expand? Will Israel be destroyed?

Now, let's consider the fact that Israel has a fair amount of nuclear arsenal, with well enough ability to use their bombs. If they were hit with atomic attack even once, then chances are the entirety of whoever fired the bomb would be burned and irradiated to ash in an instant. However, the amount of Israel lives lost would be very very large due to the small size of the country, and it's dense population.

So really, the moral debate for the United States Government for this war leads down to this:

Ether we (America) loses a war with at least a chance of no nuclear fire on our allies, or Iran dies in nuclear fire along with Israel.

Nether answer is right, but I think, if our goal is to stay true to our promise to Israel at it's creation after WWII, then the first choice will likely be the one my government picks.

With all this talk about rising tensions between the US and Iran, it got me thinking about if war broke out.

What do you guys think? Would Iran put up a fight? Would any other countries get involved?
a big frocking nuclear winter

Probably

Because the U.S are afraid to nuclear bomb Iran, Iran is afraid of jackshit so when they go to war, Iran will nuke anything americany in reach and the U.S will feel provoked and bomb the shit out of everything that moves

Hence nuclear winter
Firstly, nuclear winter was a hoax created by anti-nuclear types and journalists wanting to get the public excited about something.

Secondly, Iraq may have a nuclear capability, maybe, but it would be strictly limited. If a nuclear attack was launched, it'd probably be aimed at Israel. There certainly would be quite a retaliation (and the US would regain alot of sympathy for its Middle East wars if they were on teh side which suffered a nuclear initiation (at least the first one)), there wouldn't be a nuclear holocaust. Possibly nuclear weaponry would be deployed by the US/allies, but I doubt it'd be on a massive scale.

Thirdly, if Iran wasn't afraid of retribution, they'd already be at war.

Iran would make allies in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, by supporting anti-US forces (they already do that). It would put a strain on US relations with other middle eastern states like egypt and saudi arabia, they will be mad at us but won't side with Iran; oil prices would skyrocket, at least temporarily. Russia and (possibly China) would probably help the Iranians covertly (if not by government action, then by organized crime, smuggling etc). US allies in europe will try to stay out of the war, but they might face ground attacks.

As far as attacking Iran on the ground, they have a lot more supplies than Iraq did, so the insurgent fighting would be more deadly for US forces. Iran would pool it's resources towards trying to complete a nuclear bomb, and unless we stopped them from achieving that, the war would basically end. Iran would rebuild from our airstrikes, now posessing a nuclear weapon, and with US influence in the middle east greatly reduced.

Most countries in the world don't like Israel, that's why the US would lose all of its middle eastern allies if it attacked Iran to protect Israel. Strategically, Israel does not deserve our protection, but pro-Israel lobbyists have a lot of power in American politics, maybe enough to drive us to a disastrous war.
I think you should be the president mate.

I'm not sure this thread is all about America, by the way. We're not the only ones bristling at Iran, so don't pretend your countries are innocent here.

The US won't go running into war with Iran on our own unless directly attacked. If we are directly attacked by an actual nation (read: not an ideal like 'terrorism'), then you really get to see the US pull out all the stops. European countries would join in, too. Not necessarily because they're thrilled to be US allies, but because they know that because the are US allies, they could be attacked regardless of their stance.

Absolute best-case scenario would be another Iraq. A steamroll campaign with all the effort going into rebuilding and cleanup.

Worst-case would be if they did end up with nukes and everyone got blowed up.

My guess would be like it would be a much worse Iraq. I mean Iran's citizens have been taught hate the U.S. a lot more than Iraq's were and look how hard insurgents leaking in made it for us. A lot of Iran would actively seek out insurgents. I mean we'd just be giving Al Qaeda a perfect recruiting excuse and Iran would happily support them in any way possible to help defend their country.

It wouldn't really by the same as the wars on terrorism would it?
It would be a lot more bomb-y and shorter lived, because we won't be looking for a head honcho or some insurgents who litter the streets with IED's. I would've thought it'd be a lot more of the whole ***** slapping a country until they shut the hell up, and then place hefty fines on them when they do.
But yeah it'd probably wreck the economy some more with fuel and all that. I'm by no means qualified to speak for this, but I'm sure we can all agree it wouldn't be a good idea.

The economic collapse of the US and Iran will happen.
and if the US economy collapsed, odds are China would follow, since they have so much invested in the US. and if China's economy collapsed, along with the US, odds are the whole world economy would start to crumble/collapse. Tho of course this is all if an Iran war would collapse the US economy, and tho it would hurt it, I don't think it'd destroy it.
If it did anything close to what happened with our war that is just ending, it would destroy it. We have spent roughly $1 trillion USD so far with it. That's money we don't have. We would go even further into debt and things would begin to crumble as the price of living grew and people fell into poverty more than they already are.

Gas prices would go up again, a shitload. Economy would go to hell since we still transport everything by semi (in the U.S.) and store shelves would be empty because of late/low shipping rates.
Iran would maybe resist, but go down like Iraq did because you just can't contend with the U.S. military machine with a small country like that. There'd be pocket fighting here and there but the "war" would be over very quick and it would become a "police action".
Only if someone like China or Russia came to Iran's aid (which could happen if they wanted to seize the oil resources...) then there'd be WWIV. I don't believe for a second that Russia is an ally of the US, NATO or any other country but itself. Its still being run by the same people who were running it before, they just changed job titles and became capitalist. Doesn't make them any less untrustworthy.
I'm not downing on Russia, just saying they haven't changed much as a country except for flags and political "views".

The same thing that happened the last two times the US fought a war in the Middle East: The ground forces would be squashed. Then if we decided to continue our campaign, there would be a ridiculous insurgency and everyone would hate us even more.

Dang, beat me to it.

I don't want a whole bunch of Iranians to die; they get enough of that at the hands of their own evil government. I especially don't want to see my country getting involved in another foreign war when we just got done with one.

So, how about we just leave the speculation with "it would suck". Because that's really all that matters.

firstly we're discussing Iran secondly, 4 atomic bombs mean 4 targets mean lots-o damage

They wouldn't. The U.S. can't afford it, and if we could, we'd we lucky if we could even get within 1000 kliks of the border before Israel kicks the crap out of them.

While I hate to be the sterotypical "**** YEAH MURICAH!!!" guy...

I'd imagine it'd be heavily sided for the US, assuming this is a real "war", and not a guerrilla conflict, in which case it'd be iraq all over again.

all the tabloids will say its the end of the world, like they do every time the sun rises

People will do needlessly, economies will get fucked on both sides
Further destabalizing in the middle east, i think us westerners have dont too much already
America will get more bad rep, and so will UK cus our politicians have no back bones when it comes to the US, yet when it comes to the good of their own people they dont give a fuck

and this

also i dont get why people seem to think Iran is this super aggressive nation focusing on world domination, yes they arnt friendly and have stated they want to wipe isreal off the map, but must of these recent tensions come from the fact that Iran may possibly have a nuclear weapon.... hence the US with what may be the largest nuclear arsenal in the world feels threatened
