Their needs to be a entire button in all FPS's on all Systems where you pull out the picture of your wife and cry softly. It would add color to very brown boring firefights.

I think the key is to give us a new world or environment. One of the things I can't stand about most FPS is that the games LOOK completely interchangeable.

Take Bioshock as a positive. It's a FPS, but there's no gray/brown wasteland and the like. It's an underwater steampunk fishbowl with a crazy story to go with it.

If FPSs took more chances with story and environment, rather than sticking to WWII and safe zones for shooters, I think we'd see a lot more people enjoying them.

Oh, and I think I'd like an end to rechargeable shields where their application doesn't make sense. I like LA Noire and all, but it's a little jarring to be running after a suspect with a big red bullet hole in my character's chest, both front and back indicating the bullet passed all the way through, with no repercussions.

Shooters only have a problem if you define them too narrowly. Pure shooters are not the only shooters. If you include games that fit multiple gameplay genres, then you also have Portal, Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Red Steel 2, and Red Dead Redemption, to name a few. I would like to see a return of the "Shooter-adventure" types that forced you to explore for keycards and hidden items though.

Carry ten guns at once. And make sure one of them fires bacon.
Well fuck, why aren't all other posts erased and this one highlited for all to see?!?!?!?! You could even lose all the other guns, just keep the bacon one and the game will sell by the shitton!

1)You Jump, then your accuracy with the weapon is severely reduced so that you couldn't hit water if you fell in Ocean!, or you just cannot shoot.
2)You Jump and Fire, then you take the 1/2 the damage for each bullet fired.(or you make the bullets come out in the face of the shooter :p)
You go prone see (1).

The best way to spice it up is to make the world bigger, more weapons, more stuff to do, and make the camera third person. FPS is pretty much dying gameplay-wise, there are only so many different button combinations you can use, and most people turn them to as similar as the ones from CoD simply because (And this is pretty much true) CoD has one of the best controller setups....on console. Unless you're on PC and using a controller.

Be able to switch to third person mode would be cool for certain situations.(not fall out 3's third person though)
Customizing your character actually effects something, like Rainbow six.
Different kinds of ranking up. Bring back co-op.

Just one thing I ask. Give me a graphical style other than "realistic". Seriously, I'd love an FPS that looks like Okami. Has there been one that I missed?

revert everything back to the run&gun era.
lot,s of guns and no two weapon bullshit
no mandatory covers
no regenerating health/armor
health packs/armor packs
armor takes part of the damage not all of it (like HL1/2)
a bit of humor
zombies
PS
focus on SP instead of fucking MP

Make a game that's just ridiculous in every way. Bright colours, levels that look like they're from Charlie and the chocolate factory, guns that shoot bacon (stolen from someone else in this thread lol), dick jokes, whatever. Just make it different. Really different.

Make it so the player sees the world the way the character he/she is playing as would, like if your character was more dramatic he/she/it would notice shadows more and shadows would be darker/longer, or if your character liked a certain color than that color would be more vibrant/noticeable, or if your character doesn?t like a certain NPC then that NPC could be rendered uglier (or vice versa depending on the relationship between the two). This could be used to better flesh out a character without using any dialogue and would end up making a really interesting game if it was pared with schizophrenia.

As minor a detail as it may be, some color in an FPS would be nice from time to time. One of the things I loved about Mirror's Edge was the use of vibrant color throughout the game. It made the game appealing to look at, eye-catching, and made it easy to focus on my surroundings. So it's frustrating to see almost every single FPS these days fall back on the ol' "realistic" palette that consists solely of shades of brown, gray, and green. We understand that developers want their shooters to look more realistic, but some splashes of different colors here and there might make their games less ugly. If they need some inspiration, they should look at Mirror's Edge again, or at Jet Set Radio (so what if it isn't an FPS, it has incredibly appealing graphics with a wide variety of color).

Well, Borderlands is cel-shaded. The one problem is that the shading in question tends to be brown :)
