Different multi-player modes aside from deathmatches... you know what was really fun, Timesplitter 2's virus mode and flame tag. The virus mode was frantic, stay the fuck away from the guy with the green flames on him! Flame tag was a matter of running into someone to stick them with a flame!

So much fun...

But in mechanics overall? It'd be nice to see regenerating health die in a fire, especially in Call of Duty. I was playing Battlefield 2142 the other day and I was reminded how fun it was to have a health bar to look after, as well as the frantic rush to revive my fallen comrades in those final moments on the opposing team's titan...

Nothing says fun like a virtual duffel bag of death!

Pardon me, I just had to kill a greenskin... But nonetheless, I like his ideals along with yours. The less 'realistic' and more random fun the better. Not regen life, but a god-awful a lot. Also, walking through fire unfazed is amazing.
Plus, twenty machine guns on one guy?
Hells yeah. That'd be fun.
Haha - now I'm imagining a game where when you pick up a gun, instead of replacing your current gun with it, you attach it to your current gun somehow and eventually end up with something like this:

Also, IMHO 40K Space Marine needs a spin-off where you play as an ork :)

I've come to the conclusion that the FPS genre needs purged, and rebuilt from nothing.

It's just so bland and boring as is. I honestly don't want to buy ANY more FPS'...

Do you mean FPS shooters, or the FPS genre in general, because I think FPS in general is doing quite well still, with the likes of Amnesia (not really for me but still good) and Mirrors edge (one of my favourite games ever). FPS shooters are okay with the likes of Bioshock and Brink. FPS military shooters are the problem in terms of copy pasted crap, but damn it, they can be fun.

Back on topic, I think they need to stop trying to make FPS shooters so damn realistic, realism is boring because life is boring, I want to escape reality when I play games, if they were to take a page from Duke Nukems book, give it some stupid humour, unrealistic situations and crazy arse guns, then it might be some fun. Look at Bioshock, plasmids (mutations) that allow you to shoot bee's from your hand! that was fun. Or Halo, energy swords/ plasma pistols/ sticky plasma grenades, all fun to kill enemies with.

So yeah, stay away from gritty, realistic shooters.

Follow TF2's example. Basically, make an FPS that's not JUST an FPS. Add some customization, complex branching level design, RPG elements, SOMETHING. And then follow through with supporting your game long after launch. Enough with the linear multiplayer 6v6 "let's run straight at each other and see which side comes out on top" shit.
And the hats! Never forget the hats.

What I believe is most important for shooters is that you make the shooting satisfying, and adding many dimensions to combat. Whether the dimension is vertical, vehicular, or just some creative ways you can use the weapons, it adds replay value and freedom. I, for one, am sick of the dull horizontal shooters that only reward you for comformity.

A few ideas
Regenerating ammo, for each gun not universal ammo
Jetpack, for six degrees of freedom
Super dash\jump, for less travel time

I'd say combine all the good things that the genre has produced over the years. Take the good parts from, for example, Halo and Call of Duty, then mix them with the good parts of Doom and Duke Nukem 3D. Also, a bit more humor here and there to make things really pop.

Just make an RTT FPS that also incorporates spaceship combat. I don't know how, just do it. Now.

No cover based shooting, but instead just a guy (or girl) that can take many bullets. Weird weapons and creative ways to kill people, like kicking them into various objects. Bullet time should be included aswell. Also a scene where the protagonist rides a helicopter and is about to start a turret section, but then decides that turret sections suck, detaches the turret, jumps out of the helicopter and walks on foot with his (or hers) brand new turret a la Crysis.
He (or her) should also belong to a minority. Caucasians are too mainstream.
Oh yeah, and his (or hers) melee weapon is a scythe and the game takes place in a world that mixes elements of fantasy, steampunk, cyberpunk and feudal japan. With airship pirates.

Now THAT would be an FPS I'd play.
So... Halo? Does a cyborg count as a minority?

Im liking the fantasy steampunk airship pirates idea, maybe set it in Atlantis or something. And have powerup modes, like a rampage where you take less damage, but can only use certain weapons like a shotgun so you have to go close range and stuff.

...Anywho, I actually liked the Star Wars: Battlefront games. You aren't a super solider who has to do everything. (Theoretically), you're just one nameless, faceless grunt in the grand scheme of things. When you fall, noone mourns your death. The next soldier in line gets deployed to fill your hole and that's that. You aren't important. You were never vital. There is no 'game over' for dying...because your life isn't worth the blaster ammo you lug around everywhere.

The space battles were pretty damn cool, too. Especially being able to board the other enemy capital ship and sabotage it.

...Yeah. If they made a Battlefront game for the PS3, I would be like 'FUCK YES, SON.'
Honestly, most of the best games ever have been Star Wars. The only problem with Battlefront was that it was too rigidly class based. I cant tell you how many times i needed a rocket launcher to make one shot when i was a clone trooper. You needed to be able to equip different weapons at different times without running to a CP, changing class, making your shot and changing back. I enjoyed the Jedi Academy thing of running around with a saber, E11 and Stouker. Soldier of Fortune was good like that actually...

Drop them altogether.

Most games are considered great just because they're first person shooters. To me most, if not almost all, are absolute crap. Especially the nowadays ones.

I have always loved FPS I think they bring a level of immersion that other games cannot bring. These days they're getting a bad rap because MOST(I am not saying all there are pretty good and original FPS these days) end up being a clone of something already existing.
So what would you do to bring creativity and originality back into this genre.
The only way to make FPS games spiced up (AKA worth playing) is to get rid of multiplayer and throw in a FULL co-op support, with modding tools for the PC crowd. In fact, the best thing to do would be to start with the PC so those tools would work best. Multiplayer can be a DLC addon or something if it REALLY has to...Console would get a slimmed down version control wise to better suit the controller, but would still get keymapping because of the PC port.

Spice up shooters? I know! NAZI ZOMBIES!
Its been done?
Hmm...
Nope, can't think of anything else...Lets do it anyways!

Honestly, I'd love a game with a proper alien invasion. Not like most shooters where the enemy infantry is as basic as you are and there is nothing terrifying about the aliens but a game where the aliens are powerful to the extent where taking them down is a task...Like Shadow of the Colossus but with guns...and explosives.

But I am still really excited for BF3...I was a CoD fan until I recently started playing BF:BC2. I hope its as realistic as they make it sound.

Lots more variation in general. More weapons/equipment, possibly armor customization (Like what Rainbow 6 did where it affects gameplay). Longer campaigns (not dragging it out, but adding what was going to be left out etc.) Free roaming (think of how cool Halo would be if you got to take a pelican country to country across Reach helping in all kinds of different battles). More Co-op support. More focus on campaign/co-op than vs multiplayer. I can go on and on with ways to improve FPSs O_O

1)
Add a realistic damage simulation, incorporating death, incapacitation and wound effects.

Multi-player incapacitation would give friendly players an "XP bonus" for getting you out of harms way, but would also prevent your re-spawn until you bleed out or get saved by a buddy.

Wounds could affect things like accuracy, run/walk speed, available stances, carrying capacity, hearing and eyesight.

2)
Add a realistic weapons and ordnance simulation, incorporating ricochet, secondary fragmentation, bullet drop, wind effects, projectile velocity, sight/bore deviation and tactical/dry reloads.

Projectiles can break in pieces on impact, and still be lethal or wounding.

Projectiles passing through a wall cause secondary fragmentation, meaning parts of the exit-end of said wall will come out at speed and be lethal or wounding.

Projectiles are affected by gravity. Over a distance, they will lose height.

Projectiles are affected by wind. Over a distance, they will deviate from their original path, pushed by the wind. Also knows as Kentucky Wind-age.

Different rounds of ammunition coupled with different barrel designs and lengths will incur different muzzle velocities on their slung projectiles, causing differences in the damage to the target, the projectile travel time and thus the bullet drop over time as well.

The sight on a weapon is commonly situated a short distance above the barrel, which means that, unless shooting at exactly the range sighted, you will not hit where you aim.

A standard assault rifle holds thirty rounds. It also has a chamber, which is where the bullet ready to be fired is kept. If your weapon is dry, the bolt will lock back, and will need to be charged before you can continue firing after loading a fresh magazine.
If, however, you choose to reload prior to going dry, this would not be necessary, and your weapon would end up with the new magazine, plus the round in the chamber.
Moreover, a tactical reload takes less time as the bolt does not lock back, but also has the drawback of leaving you with a non-full magazine, which would either be thrown away, or kept for later use or consolidation of multiple non-full magazines, at an appropriate time.

That's all I got for now.

no, no, everyone shut up. i have the best idea ever.

you... ARE the gun! no wait, that's moronic. never mind everybody, false alarm. the FPS genre is stagnating. there's really no innovation you can add that hasnt been done already, several times. but then, you can say that about all genres. maybe just make a hyper-stylized version a la killer 7 or brutal legend?

Make it so you can hold a certain amount of ammo for all your guns combined. You want 200 sniper bullets? Go ahead. But if you want to use your assault rifle at all, it better be as a beating stick. Maybe go a step further, and set a limit for total weight you can carry. That means you can carry a bullet-less shotgun, but it'd greatly reduce your ammo capacity with your other main guns. However, you could keep this shotgun for later use, as opposed to dropping it on the ground like you'd have to do with the weapons you decided not to stock with ammo.

Needless to say, just making a game with these mechanics alone sounds fun. Fallout has the right mindset, but I think this could be applied in more games (its not like we have a lacking of apocalyptic settings in our games to justify not doing this).

Well...being able to carry more then two weapons would be nice, while I like rechargeable shields. The fact that it's EVERY where is stupid. Maybe if your shield recharged but your health didn't. And you'd have to preform warfare surgery like in MGS 3: Snake eater. With pulling the bullets out cauterization of the wound. But you could do it all with one medpack instead of a bunch of separate items. Or...the gaming companies could STOP making just about every shooter a carbon copy of halo. That would be nice too. Enough with the FUCKING space marines. Expect for Aliens: Colonial Marines. To me they were the original. (PS: don't give a shit if they weren't their the first memory I have of my childhood so pfffffttt)
