The thing with FPS is it's basically the 'real life view'. So you could do anything from real life in it. But the most exciting things are shooting and driving, which have already been done to exhaustion so much that any other concept of FPS gameplay is hardly realisable.

Mirrors Edge was a good attempt to make things different. I'm sorry it didn't do so well.

Amnesia; The Dark Descent was interesting as well because it did not give you any weapon, and so the whole point of seeing through the characters eyes was immersion.

And to me, FPS is the most potential game mode for immersion, because of it's real life imitation.

Therefore, I propose that what needs to be stressed in FPS's is amount of atmosphere and a feeling of being the character.

I just wish I could come up with a good concept for other uses of FPS, but it all seems to be based on horror or shooting.
Not to sound jaded, but thr reason FPS's are mostly about shooting is because it's a "First person Shooter." Without shooting, then it's not an first person shooter. Although I do like the idea of first person games. Like you said, Amnesia: Dark Descent is good because of the first person perspective creates great imersion. My personal favorite first person exploration game is "The devils Tuning fork", which is sort like a blind FPS with no guns.

I only skimmed the first page so bare with me if this has already been mentioned.

How about an actual stealth aspect to them? Like being able to sneak by a whole team, sabotage them someway, and ruin their day. Throw in some stealth kills/executions, balance out the issue of potential opness, and bask in the glory of being able to stealthily disable a whole team.

There needs to be dinosaurs
Umm..they should add muskets (realistic) just for fun. Have servers that has no sniping. Sometimes it is really annoying in Bad Company 2 if your whole team are sniping (and failing at it).
That's about it for me.

I'll say one thing.. You could bring back 8 classes in Battlefield 3 instead of going back to an arcady 4. Sorry, even though I liked Bad Company 1-2, 4 classes.. 3 of them can take out a tank if it's looking the wrong way... Whatever happened to the dread and fear when you see that gigantic barrel peek around a corner?

BF2, only 3/8 classes had potential to dispatch heavy vehicles. You're defending a flag and a tank or APC rolls up, unless an anti-tank, spec ops, or a lucky engineer was around, you got nothing. A tank fucked shit up back then. Now, it's like "Oh, a tank.." Tanks aren't feared.. They don't fuck anything but the terrain.

I still play Battlefield 2 more than any other FPS. Because nothing has come close to it's greatness.

I would make a first person game that's quite literally the Battle of ragnarok. It will follow the Norse Mythology as close as possible and the soundtrack will be composed and performed by Manowar.
As epic as that sounds, I'd love there to be a decent amount of the soundtrack to also be performed by Amon Amarth. Such as Twilight of the Thunder God when the Thor vs Jörmungandr fight happens.

I would like to have shooters with actual sense of humor that doesn't just consist of creative swearing, though I did somewhat like Bulletstorm. How about I get an FPS with the humor of Monty Python?

Begin..by giving every player the ability to control time, like prince or persia...

Then allow the six axis to be used to dodge bullets, with time being slowed.

Somehow balance these new mechanics. then give everyone the power to fly.

Serious Sam 3. Enjoy.
Any FPS game pre-current generation.

Also, I personally feel that the FPS industry needs to just... go away for a little while. Let itself cool down, and not let CoD, Halo, Gears of War, and well... those are about it... take all the original ideas. Let some of the smaller companies create something fantastic, rather than leaving the good ideas for the 'good' publishers and killing brilliant ideas before they bloom.
Examples:
Mindjack - Fantastic Concept, terrible product.
Duke Nukem Forever - Tried to catch up at the end, and look where that got it.

Make it less shooty and more tactical. I mean, there is a big gaming difference between running through a maze of trenches trying to flush out enemy combatants, and well ... CoD. Add some capturable spawn points (the only purpose of which is as a place to spawn, not as a 'capture the flag' mission), make the levels more extensive and war-like ... so yeah, my suggestion to the melting pot is to move it away from a run-and-gun and more towards an actual battle.
This. Some people wish we would go back to the days of the Duke and leave military shooters... Well I wish they would make proper brown n bloom shooters, as it were. The Rainbow Six games are awesome. Even the newer Vegas games were great IMO. Go around one corner without looking - boom, dead. Storm one room without first analyzing the situation properly and positioning your team mates - boom, dead. Every move requires thought, patience and skill.

Maybe its just me, but sneaking into the the enemies base to find a nuke, killing only those you have to until you find yourself in a position that puts you right where you want to be to make up for your lack of men and then starting the proper firefight sounds like so much fun to me. More than kicking down the front door for some stupid slow motion shit and running along corridors all day.
Actually, I'd like to add a more realistic weapons and damage system. Take out regenerating health, have a biologically correct system of damage (as in, get shot in the foot 50 times? Unless you bleed to death you shouldn't die). And don't have this perfect accuracy crap. Put in realistic projectile motion, have some flags and dust clouds scattered through a level to simulate and indicate wind conditions, etc. If you want to improve upon an FPS you need to add depth. We have the basic point and shoot mechanics, we have the 'kill the bad guys' motivation, now we need to add challenge to it, add depth to the mechanics we do have and put in the mechanics we don't.

I also don't mind class systems, maybe don't have medics with insta-heals and stuff, amke it take a bit of time, or make them preventative, like patching up a wound before they become unconscious/dead from blood loss, or give them some adrenaline to help them through the pain and refocus their vision and stuff.
I agree with this and what it has quoted (and what that has quoted). I want to feel like I'm in an actual war, not like i'm some superman with pinpoint accuracy and regenerating health that just runs from one over the top set piece to the next.

FPS aren't in a bad spot if Devs would stop releasing the damned things half done. Brink, as an example, had so much potential, but was executed horribly.

Thats my idea. I callit the Nano Arsenal. You scan a weapon, and it can release a swarm of nanomachines and replicate that weapon (think of it like the BLADE system from vanquish.) Allows you to carry stuff like miniguns and RPGs, while not actually wieghing you down.

Also, I want to see the idea of Blacklight: Tango Down and its gun customization. That always seemed like such an awesome idea...

Do you mean FPS shooters, or the FPS genre in general
FPS stands for First Person Shooter. Just FYI (for your information).

OT: I think that if you want to play an old-school FPS like Doom or Duke Nukem then just play the old games, it's not like they are going anywhere. Regenerating health can be bad for suspension of disbelief but it is a good solution to the constant search for health packs that plagued my early multiplayer experiences.

Also Battlefront 3 would make my life complete.

More daring design choices are what I want. If you're going to make a gritty shooter and you're going for verisimilitude... don't make the player able to absorb bullets like a sponge. Every single bullet that strikes home should have dire consequences. Think the original Rainbow Six. If you haven't played it, and like your shooters to "feel realistic", go play it.

If you're shooting for ridiculous, such as with a Duke Nukem game, go over the top. Don't limit anything based on supposed realism. Don't make another DNF or Bulletstorm... make another Painkiller.

A Gothic fantasy FPS in the vein of Hexen/Heretic. This is because magic and swords, unlike bullets, are dodgeble, not to mention more colorful. Much more skill required in battles than simply hiding behind cover and poking out to shoot once the enemy stops firing (though cover was always useful in those games).

Another factor from those I haven't seen done lately is the lack of any kind of safe harbor. You're in a huge sprawling level with tons of hiding spots, ammo and cover, but you never know when the next batch of clawed horrors will show up frothing at the mouth with the need to murder you, so you keep moving. Maybe something like the AI from Left for Dead, in that if you are low on health and mana the game will only spawn a small throng every now and then, but if you're riding high it will do everything to destroy you. And hiding in a cupboard for ten minutes just pisses it off.

Bring back health meters, being able to carry more than 2 guns, get rid of cover based shooting... Essentially, look at Painkiller. That. Great shooter.
