I like how I was put on probation for sharing my honest opinion when asked for it. Way to go mods.

I learnt how to be an intelligent, level headed, sophisticated, respectful and well spoken fanboy.
Or at least that's how I see myself.

I've learnt that the more evil you are, the cooler you are.

With all the 'how you you kill someone' and 'if you could get away with murder, would you do it' threads I start to wonder - Maybe games DO influence violence...
This actually raises a good point. It does seem that a huge amount of people here would kill without remorse if it was a burglar for instance. And then there is the whole 'I would have bashed his head in because I'm such a tough guy.' attitude. It perplexes me. And there is seemingly a lot of people with weapon fetishes. Who in their right mind would have weapons around their house I keep asking myself.
I hope that it can be chalked up as general immaturity that people will grow out of, because, hell, some of you people scare me! So I've learned that... hell I don't know. It would be wrong to say that a lot of people are crazy, but then perhaps that a lot of people are seemingly prone to violence at the least provocation.

Apart from that, I've learned that I am a grammar nazi. And a punctuation nazi. I didn't know before but sweet mercy do I know it now. I get positively insane if people don't capitalize.

I've learned a lot of BBCode and a little bit of image embed HTML. I've learned that a gaming forum doesn't need to comprise entirely of Halo vs Half Life and PS3 vs Xbox threads to be popular. And I've learned that the banhammer is heavy.

That not every forum is trying to be 4chan, and therefore filled with hackers, dropkicks, trolls and freaks.

I have learnt a huge amount about forums and posting from the Escapist, having been a forum virgin before I signed up here.
Wait, maybe that wasn't the best way to say it....
I have also learnt that there are parts of the internet like 4chan that exist, but that I should avoid them forever.
Plus some totally random nonsense that at times I wish I didn't know.

I have learned that there is no God. Oh, sorry, that's what I've learned from my job... Hold on, I have the sheet here somewhere...
*SHUFFLE*
Ahh! Found it, I have learned that my cat's breath smells like cat foo... DARN IT RALPH!
Ok...Ok... Oh, other side. Here we are: "The expanse of wisdom can only be garnered while staring into the abyss that is a Rick-Roll."
THAT is what I have learned here, my fellow humans.

I have learned many things, some of them are what I would prefer not to know.

It is possible to find a good discussion on a regular basis in a forum, there is a lot of diversity on these forums so you can find a lot of different ideas and opinions no matter what the discussion is about.

Despite all pretences, a lot of users are trolls that are just as bad as those you will find on other forums, with the exception that they will generally type with better English than you can find elsewhere.

This gives the impression to others that The Escapist community is in fact more intelligent than other online communities where really there are just a lot of people who can grasp the use of basic communication in order to sound polite and sophisticated while insulting someone else for thinking differently.

Hypocrisy is sadly not uncommon as a troll thread is ironically posted in about a dozen times with "This is a troll, report and move on". The posters either not grasping the fact they are doing the opposite of what they claim, or their ego is so large that they cannot help but add another post to their list while pretending to be doing something helpful.

Hypocrisy extends even further. Many people on here complain that they are looked down upon/criticised for being gamers/geeks/nerds/having different interests, either by their friends, the preferred sex, society in general or their parents. Yet, they lovingly do the same to anybody who is different from them.

"Use the search bar" is almost like The Escapists pick-up line. It's all well and good politely reminding somebody that their thread has been done before, but there are a select group of people whose post count seems to contain little else but this phrase in every thread they can discover, I almost wonder if they specifically search for repeat threads to post it in.

That being said, these bad points do not (currently) outweigh the good and so these forums are an enjoyable place to post on and have some interesting discussions.

I've learned many things like:

The internet isn't 100% full of idiots who curse at other people and argue over trivial things. (Most of it is, but this place is like a safe haven).
You are joking right? Mention the words Emo, Halo, Religion, Christianity and it's like the reasoning part of everybody's' brain snaps.

It's okay I don't much care for Max, he strikes me as shooting into forums saying something snide and running before his opinions can be challenged, but I'm new and opinionated.
Snide comments? Ok, fair enough(although they are usually deserved), but Max replies pretty much every time he is quoted so I can't agree with that.

It was a bit of a blanket statement, and the mods are a little trigger-happy this week. I am wondering if it's any of the new three marking their territory.

Well you make more sense as a Halo fanboy than any of the Halo haters, so I'd agree.

What... bad-mouthing video games!? I'LL KILL YOU!

No, I've realised I'm nowhere near as smart, witty, or funny as I thought I was.

Adding to my original point. I've also learnt that people on these forums in particular will bump up troll threads just to let the OP know they reported them. We had an obvious troll thread yesterday that gained 60 replies...

Why?

The OP, nor anyone else cares that you reported them; can't you tell they knew what they did was wrong, just report them and don't reply. Don't mindlessly add to a worthless number at the bottom of your name...

That 'They Might Be Giants' is probably the coolest band EVAR.
That No one wants to discuss if people would've reacted differently if the Halo books were written before the games( I thought it would be a good discussion, people thought i was trolling)
That Psychonauts is a lot more known then one thinks.
That Shooting things is fun and useful.
That philosiphy is a waste of time.
How to use my nerdiness as a tool.
How to make a smoke grenade out of a tennis ball.
That Max's one story about his arrest is awesome.
That someone somewhere liked 'The Time-Travelers Wife'
That Daniel Craig is the best James Bond actor, Sean Connery is James Bond.
That my username is Misspelled.

That I have many more and can go on.
