Topic title says it all. Having wonderful insights about Fallout 3, Mass Effect, and even Bioshock (bad example, but still...), every single one lacks something to make it truly great.

What I would love in a free-roaming FPS/TPS-RPG would be intriguing and wonderful sidequests which actually affect the main story plot. Also it seems that those 3 lacks what would truly be called "customizing" which I love so much. Sure perks work, but most of them are just for kicks or are needless.

We need a free-roaming game that all the characters can die at any time, anywhere, and by any means, and the story will compensate for it.

Try making me that Bethesda!

I'm still dreaming of a survival horror zombie apocalypse rpg where you have to move from town to town scavaging food and supplies.

And....this.

Yeah, I would love Fallout 3 taken to the absolute EXTREME, basically what the OP described, except Fallout 3. The post-apocalyptic, 50's themed environment is and has been my favorite environment. I say get Ubisoft and Bethesda to make New Vegas. Actually, you know what, I think if someone makes enough of an uproar about how awesome a game with the OP's criteria, then I would have the perfect game.

And I want a Rainbow Six Left 4 Dead. THAT would be the shit.

It would be sooooo cool

Leading a squad, zombies lots of zombies, very large world in one piece not sections and sectors with a loading time every half hour, using vehicles, a LARGE arsenal of weapons, and possibly a fully destructive environment

To the OP: any game in The Elder Scrolls series will offer you just that. The older the version, the more freedom you get.

You can download the first two games for free: http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/downloads_games.htm

A singleplayer game that boasts more than 200 hours of game time on the story alone.

Yeah that sounds like fun. But I would really like it if it had online capability, cause killing zombies is just more fun with friends.

1. Zombies, I have yet to see a zombie based sandbox game. What the hell?
2. Exploration with rewards and easter eggs. One of the things I loved about GTA San Andreas and the ONLY thing I liked about Fallout 3 was exploring the area and finding stuff, even if it was just a shitty little buggy I was happy that I found it.
3. No teleporting, just walking + vehicles.
4. HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE area. One of the few good things to come out of current gen games is completely huge areas bigger than most countries.
5. Real-time time and weather.
6. Checkpoints. This is not the 90s we don't want to have to go back to the last save point. (Yeah, Far Cry 2!!)
7. Smooth interaction between all surfaces and features. No falling through map because you're not supposed to be there etc.
8. More zombies.
9. Can't believe I'm saying this but... fucktonnes of minigames and sidequests. Preferably an infinite amount of side quests getting more and more difficult.
10. Yet more zombies.
11. Online is not neccessary but some things would be good. Like training your character in the game then going online and using it for a deathmatch (ranked obviously). Also game stats online so we can know who is a sad grinder who's played the game so much no one can beat him.
12. ZOMBIES
13. Multiple gaming styles. Sandbox RPGs should include everything: shooting, racing, platforming, zombies, etc.
14. A plot (with zombies).
15. Did I mention zombies?

and this time, remember swords cut so try to work that into the game. I'm tired of whacking some guard over the head with what is apparently satan's doombringer. Next time, I want to see damage from hitting someone in the face with a mace.

Why has this not been made yet? It's clear enough that everyone wants it.

Cities... what is it with the lack of cities? S.T.A.L.K.E.R., towards the end, you go to Pripyat and fight through the city... I thought that was the most fun part of the game... Fallout 3, seemed like the only city was the mall in DC, which didn't seem like much of a city... all the others were pretty small...

Long story that preferably doesn't have a point of no return, and lots of side quests...

Karma is ok, but as long as it affects how you play (Fallout 3) and not the outcome of the game (BioShock)...

Also, puzzles (like HL2) and upgradeable weapons... I would rather keep upgrading my weapons instead of finding new ones all the time...

I want them to be like Deus Ex.

That game had it all; upgradeable weapons, choices that had a genuine effect on the game (from minor character interactions to the final showdown) hours of dialog, books worth of text(emails, newspapers, novels) all to be read if you wanted, excellent range of characters, massive re playability and RPG elements that worked admirably.

It wasn't quite a free roaming game, but the sheer amount of choice you had, and the huge amount of content made it feel like it was.

So yeah, I'd like some kind survival FPS, (as has already been mentioned) where you can move around a whole region ( a real region, with all the proper landmarks) scavenging for supplies, and gathering a band of survivors, finding places to use as refuge, and taking the fight to whatever it is that you're fighting. Aliens, zombies, an invading army, I don't mind.

You could use anything as a weapon, and make home made stuff like bombs from various chemicals, botch together custom guns, build you own hideout.

Some kind of plot would need to be shoehorned into this though :S

Yay, Notoriouslynx for president

What I'd most like in a sandbox first or third person shooter is a good plot.

Have a deep running plot that you have to work to uncover but give the player multiple ways to progress through the plot so the player could do what they want and deal with the outcome of their actions. The player choices in the game shouldn't be laid out before the player so when making choices the player may not know all the options they are choosing between depending on what they have done before. Karma systems are OK but should be done without obvious moral choices like save the puppy, push the granny down the stairs.

Obviously you can't give the player complete freedom to work the plot because users are morons who would doubtlessly decide the plot is to kill as many NPCs as possible but some freedom to explore a rich plot would be nice.

sorry that got a bit long
tl;dr- dynamic plot choices

Agreed 100%! Companies copy each other, but if only they copies something like Deus Ex, we'd have more games with, I dunno... innovation in them? Instead, they just copy what's marketable and Ctrl+C Ctrl+P, lather, rinse, repeat (bullet time, cover system, space shooter, THE WORLD IS BROWN, etc).

Eidos had a good thing going when they made Deus Ex. It's scary to thing that the fate of the franchise now rests within the hands of Square Enix. Well, I should start getting used to seeing JC Denton concept art given the "Kingdom Hearts" treatment.

Screens for Deus Ex 3...

I'm worried. Its supposed to be a prequel right? They've gone for the same clean look as the 2nd game... So the world was clean looking and everything was all shiny and smooth before the fist game took place, then it went all cyberpunk at the time of the first game, then the world went back to being clean and futuristic looking in time for the second game?

No. I'm not convinced.

Not to mention Deus Ex 2 was supposed supposed to be when things were royally fucking up. yet even that city with a plague being spread around was sleek and elegant.

In the game's defense, the dance party ending was almost worth the game's shortcomings. Almost.
