Well, unlike him you seem to see this as a bad and somewhat unfortunate thing. So kudos for continuing to try.Nalgas D. My attention span has gone entirely to crap, though, and I keep having to stop for 30-45 minutes every ten pages when I read most books these days, which is a pain in the ass. Took me a couple hours to make it through a 20 page essay by Bertrand Russell, and it's been over a year since I started The Road to Reality (yeah, I'm one of those people who reads physics books for fun, too), and I'm not quite done with the "intro" math (which is a bit long for an introduction, at something like 350 pages, heh).DoctorNick said:He claims that despite liking it, he can only read a few pages at a time before his mind revolts and he has to do something else.
The moral of this story: Head injuries are bad, m'kay?
As for my friend, I sometimes can't help but wonder if part of it was his upbringing. You know how when you go into most peoples houses, you can generally expect to see at least a book or two? Even if they don't like to keep a bunch of books in the house they'll usually have a few that were given to them as gifts or something and maybe even one borrowed from the library.
His parents house is completely devoid of books. I mean it is a fucking certified book-free zone, I've been through just about every room in that house multiple times over the years and with exception of my friends bedroom (and most of those were text books) I cannot recall ever seeing a single motherfucking book in the entire damn place.
It shows through when you realize just how completely not well-read his parents are, I was sitting in their living room once looking at the light fixture on the ceiling and I said to his Mom, "I like your light fixture, it looks very 'Frank Lloyd Wright' to me."
His Mother replied to me, "Oh, who's that?"
My mind kind of shut down at that point, simply recoiling in sheer horror at the statement.
I mean, really. They live in this country and have never even heard the god damned name?
