Well then. I guess I will say Parachute Musical. I have no idea if that's just an album by them or their band name or both. It's my old guitar teacher's band. They do this jazz type stuff, and I remember liking it. Haven't given the album a listen to in a while.
I've got two. Lordi, a heavy rock band from Finland, and Dr. Steel, a mad scientist trying to take over the world.
Lordi is a pretty cool band, they're not that big here in the US, but they're huge in parts of Europe. Their music is influence by a lot of classic rock bands like KISS.
Dr. Steel... well, he's a little hard to describe. The closest thing you could probably compare his music to is steampunk, but he says he doesn't have a genre, saying that its too limiting for him to stick to one. He's definitely worth googling. Check out his site. He does this whole mad scientist act saying he's trying to take over the world, its rather amusing.

Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots are a great goth country band. Elliot Smith rocked my world. Beirut is a great gypsy-folk band that noone here has ever heard about. The Briefs are a great punk band. Crystal Castles is a good dance techno band, they took old Atari sound chips and plugged them into their synthesizers and their music sounds like old arcade games but remixed. Heavy trash is a great rockabilly-surf rock band. Then Johnny Flynn is one of the greatest musicians from England since the Beatles in my opinion. Man Man is a phenomenal mix of cabaret, Russian folk, and zaniness.
these are just a few that almost nobody in my town has heard of. Pisses me off. Everybody raves about the Jonas Bros, 50 Cent and Jack Johnson here. God help me.
Badly Drawn Boy, Eels, The Kooks, The Shins. And probably a lot more. Most of my friends are into mainstream music like pop and hip hop, but I like more alternative stuff, so most of them have never heard of my favorite bands.
Question: does anyone in these threads besides me actually check out the bands that other people recommend? Anyway, I say the same band every time this thread is made (and it has been made over and over and over and...). Defiance, Ohio is a stripped down acoustic folk-punk band in the vein of early Against Me!, and most of there stuff can be had for free right [a href="http://defianceohio.terrorware.com/audio.php"]here[/a]. If you like real punk rock (not that Green Day, Blink 182 crap), you should check them out. Start with "Share What Ya Got."

Sunn O)))- long, very slow music, bass-heavy, mix of dark ambient and doom/drone metal.
Khanate- similar instrumental style in that it's long and slow and drawn out. Dubin's vocals are high and screamed and sound..."tortured" fits very well for most of it.
Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine- another drone band. But they're...um...different. Only put out one album ("Rampton").
Sigur Ros isn't totally unheard of in the right circles, but most people aren't familiar with them. They're spacey progressive-rock (labeled as "post-rock", but that really just means "they use rock instruments but they're not making rock music"). Agaetis Byrjun is one album you MUST hear before you die. As good as or, in my opinion, better than Dark Side of the Moon/Wish You Were Here/other such albums.
The Church- alternative rock, they've done things from poppy to spacey to psychadelic and everything in between. Probably the easiest of this list to get into if you're into more conventional music/rock. And even if you're not, they're still a really good band.
Morphine- Rock, blues, and jazz all in one. You kind of just have to hear it to get it. In one of their videos one guy plays tow saxophones at once. Two saxophone at once.
Motograter- if you're into neck-snapping metal.
Isis- avant garde metal. Long (6+ minutes) pieces. They change/"evolve" from start to finish, and Celestial and Oceanic are two of the best metal albums ever recorded, I say. The guy's voice is a bit unusual. "In the Absence of Truth" is their worst album that I own (still a good album). "Wavering Radiant" is supposedly worse though from what I've heard. (those were there last two, by the way)
Explosions in the Sky is another semi-unknown band in the general populace, but pretty big in their area. Long, melodic, entirely instrumental pieces, some are semi-metal and others are symphonic and simply mind-blowing in their epicness. Worth it if you like melodic music, almost no matter what type. If you prefer really rhythmic stuff, not for you, really. There's rhythm but it's not constant and the songs are more about the interplay of instruments than following a set beat/rhythm.

Atheist - Incredible Tech Death metal band from Florida with very strong Jazz influences.
Bolt Thrower - Death Metal from Coventry, England. They "sing" about War an' stuff like that.
Cynic - Technical Progressive Death/Fusion band. Can't really describe them, they rule.
Electric Wizard - Ear crushing, headphone destroying, Stoner/Doom metal.
Kyuss - Incredible, just incredible.
Mother Love Bone - One of the first Grunge bands.
Novembers Doom - If you like Opeth, then you'll like these guys.
Orange Goblin - Great Hard/Stoner rock band, great for listening to on a warm summers day.
