I have been hearing a lot of people saying they are getting tired of zombies in video games. So, I have been thinking, what should be the next big enemy in games?

I think warlocks should be the next big enemy in video games. Evil wizards would be a welcome change of pace compared to the shambling undead.

Werewolves . Gaming has a shameful lack of werewolves .

We got a giant repetoir of monsters but we stick with vampires and zombies . Really what the fuck . Let's start pulling some mythical creature out of their sleep and raise hell.

Agreed. we need some more variety in our enemies and bringing out some of the big ones would be great to shake things up!!

Psht. Werewolves? So very mainstream. How lowbrow can you get? *sips organic cuppachino while glaring disapprovingly over scarf*

In all seriousness, vampires, zombies and werewolves are sort of the 'big three' in the supernatural bad guy realm, so I feel that would tire out quickly as well. Why not golems? They're made by people with good intentions, to help protect those who can't protect themselves, but they inevitably snap and start trying to kill everything. Perfect video game fodder. Or what about shadow creatures? Alternate dimensions? Spiders? Spiders. Because fuck spiders.

Robots. They're great because they can have a wide variety of forms, styles, motives, weapons, and ai behaviors. Plus, imagine some robots that were like the Borg and upgraded to combat whatever strategy you used against them.

Aww, why do you hate the little spiders. They're so cute and cuddly. I mean, just look at them:

How could you not want to cuddle up to something like that?

On a more serious note, I would say something like goblins. They still provide plenty of enemies you can slaughter but they at least will do more than simply walk slowly towards you mumbling indiscernible words. Not to mention, they can be used for more comedic value than zombies can.

Little spiders are fine. Little spiders outside my house are fine. Little spiders inside my house are borderline fine because they will soon be outside spiders. But let me ask you this... when was the last time you saw a little spider in a video game?

How about the old Norse and Teutonic myths? Giants and shapeshifters, trolls and elves, giant wolves and snakes... ripe territory for video game enemies. Yet another reason I was mad Too Human's gameplay was terrible.

Survivalist types who got a little too crazy with their paranoia and stuff, blowing stuff up because otherwise The Man will tie us all down and force us to watch The Best of Jerry Springer for hours, or something equally horrible.

The reason zombies are popular is because they're the easiest enemy to deal with, the easiest to develop gore-porn for, and the easiest to program "AI" for. Nothing will beat them.

Cowboy zombie werewolves doppleganging as shadow ninja spiders while driving an alien spaceship that's crewed by mutants and was built by the ghosts of goblins.

I'd say those would be some pretty nasty buggers to face down in a dark alley. :3

Should be ants. Think of the potential survival-horror applications it could have. God knows we need some more good ones.

Could work off the old chestnut of nuclear radiation or some weird ooze, then the ants start to mutate in various ways. Some become much smarter, have some grow bigger (with a few extra big ones to eat people), some of them can eat through metal, a few fire ants to start fires. We could go nuts. Maybe go through a city that's falling apart, or a destroyed alien colony that was wiped out with a few ant hills remaining.

Oh hell, I just want revenge on them ever since they got in my car and refuse to leave.

Well, watched Phase IV yet? Them's some scary ants right there. I've had a hard time figuring out that ending, mind...and the book was even worse in that regard.

But yes, ants are, eegh, I had an infestation of those two years ago. It took forever to get rid of them.

We can always get back to demons.

Preferably the sweet-talking manipulators like Dragon Age uses over the DOOM styled ones.

Pedophiles, obviously. Then developers and fanpeople can make pretentious comments about how this most artful medium is a reflection of society's fears and finally someone had the courage to cover the important material. Better yet, they did it all in one convenient package that can be billed as both Game of the Year and a "serviceable video game." It's win-win!

Actually, simulating rape with rhythm mechanics isn't a bad idea. I should incorporate that into my dungeon simulator. Obviously the rhythm wouldn't be for her pleasure, heh, but I could put in a violence meter, and the assault has to be THIS INTENSE for the avatar to climax. I still don't know how I'd integrate a baseball bat into that. Perhaps as a QTE prompt that, when successfully activated, provides a +25% sadism buff. I don't really like QTEs tho.

What I'd like to see?
All the crazy shit mentioned above. Let's have vampires, werewolves, evil wizards giant spiders and super huge Shadow of the Colossus style creatures. Shit, let's have 'em all in the one game. Oh you just staked Dracula in the heart, wiped out the werewolves, beaten the evil wizard and burned down his giant spider lair? Here's a pair of pliers and brass knuckles, go kill that ninety foot tall demon.

What we'll probably see?
Whatever the next few big huge games have and whatever's relatively easy to make. Expect more terrorist/PMC/henchmen/corrupt government agent-style guys, humanoid mutant/monster people and more zombies.
