Having got bored of pet ownership a Newzealander killed then roasted his pet pitbull [http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/em/fr/-/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8218534.stm]

A newspaper comentator commented:
"They should be giving him a medal. If every pit bull owner in the land followed his lead, New Zealand would be a safer place to live."

He added: "The pit bull fraternity should be persuaded that their pets, once barbecued, are as delicious as crayfish or rare sirloin."

I can't imagine a British commentator giving that response, it did give me a giggle though. Obviously animal welfare groups are outraged and out to change the law to make this illegal.

Having said that would it have been an issue if it was a sheep or a chicken instead of a dog? It's all meat. He didn't eat a person.

Did he do anything wrong?

Fundamentally speaking there's nothing wrong with eating dog. It's just that in most countries where dogs are eaten regularly, the dogs are treated like shit in tiny little cages, and electrocuted to death. Not pretty.

As long as it was a quick death and was cooked very well there shouldn't be any problem.

Not really. Sounds quite nice actually. Although I fail to see the similarity between crayfish and sirloin.

I've known plenty of dogs who were much more interesting than the majority of people I've met.

He didn't do anything wrong, but he's still a dick.
Just 'cause.
Because of his actions or because "dick" is your default opinion on people?

Well usually one can apply the "Well it's cute, so we can't eat it!" argument, but that doesn't really apply to pit bulls. While I agree that they are a dangerous breed and hold some allure to low-income white people, eating them hardly seems the logical option.

No. He "humanely" (that is, the same way meat plants do it) killed the dog and ate it. Dog is served in China. The only reason people are appalled by this is because most people have dogs as pets and would not dream of eating little Fifi or their golden retriever, even if they had to put them down. It's mostly a culture thing in my opinion.

Well it's really the same as eating any other animal, like a chiken, or a cow. He owned it, it's leagal to do what he did. It's a little odd, but certainley not wrong.

There is a difference between dogs which are bread for ownership, and those which are used for food in parts of Asia.

Well it falls under cruelty to animals, its not like he was in an emergency situation where he needed food. He will probably get a slap on the wrist, its kind of weird mind you. I guess it wouldnt be so strange if we farmed pitt bulls for food like chickens or cows, but since we dont.
ccording to the article there will be no slap on the wrist, its allowed where he lives.

Does a pet count as free range?

Well, since he did it himself, then that's wrong. Don't you need a licence to farm animals? Now, if he had just bought dog meat and cooked it, that would be fine.

erm... my main problem with eating dogs is that I can't imagine they taste very good and they haven't gone through years of controlled breeding and special diets to produce a nutritious and delicious species. Morally I suppose he could've picked something lower in the food chain as there is less wastage in order to bring you that meal... Otherwise I've got no problem.

and yes I own a dog.

It's pretty hypocritical to complain about this as being a case of cruelty to animals if you eat meat.

It's an animal, he killed it and ate it. I wouldn't kill my dog, because I love my Odin, but it's his dog, he can do what he wants that's legal.
