Sigh, couldn't you check the search bar a bit? This seems to have become a trend lately, oddly enough.

It was revolutionary for its time and it presented a new way to tell story.

Also, pacing in a videogame means that you never start to feel overwhelmed or tired of playing the game. From my experience with Half Life 2, they stopped the combat for a nice puzzle just often enough to keep me going through it till the end of the day.
Sigh, if you are going to respond, please let it be with something positive. A lot of people will say "it was revolutionary for it's time and presented a story like never before." But this just seems like a very bland and generic way everyone describes it in every other post. I am sure this individual was looking for specific reasons like you finally listed.

It's also a growing trend on this site to not help other posters but rather point out their inconsistancies. I know if I had someone doign that to me everytime I asked a question these forums would be quite barren, don't you think?

See I've never played Half Life nor do iI know anybody who has so please tell why its so popular.
Very easy, go back to 1998, look at what shooters you were playing. Then look at Half Life.
Better still play those old shooters, then play Half Life.

System Shock 2 came out close to it and is (in my opinion) the better game, it's bigger and has a better plot with similar story telling methods. But Half Life got there first and managed a balance of accessability and gameplay that put it way above most other shooters at the time.

The real big difference though was the number and density of set pieces in Half Life, you take it for granted now but when Half Life dropped you were playing through events, monsters and sequences that all other shooters up to then had confined to cutscenes or one or two major bosses. It was a bit of a shock.

I'm quite sorry my answer displeases you. Perhaps my future posts will please you further in the future.

Half Life introduced a new way of telling stories. It was a landmark in the FPS world. It also has one of the BEST intro's to any game. Your a scientist not a security guard and on your way to work via a monorail. It was excellent in building the scope and size of the game.
