This is the question I had to answer today when visiting my young nephew. He's been big into Flash games & such for a little while now and found an adaptation of the classic block-game while surfing this morning.

Very nearly had to restrain myself from smacking the little smart@$$. I mean... is that how gaming progresses these days? Am I so old that Tetris is from a bygone era? Do the young have no respect for teh classics anymore?!

Well, to be honest, Tetris isn't all that great. Puzzle games have come a long way.

But, smack him for me, will you?

It's almost becoming a problem. Everything has to be really shiny and beautiful to be enjoyed by the youth today. Gameplay seems to be far less important.

By God I hope the last line wasn't serious.

Seriously, why would they?

Yes it's awesome, and yes there are versions of it on sale now and stuff, but there is still absolutely no reason for him to have heard of it unless he's into proper gaming. Which "Flash games" do not account to.

Ah I remember back in my day... ha :)

Yeah that does seem mad that some gamers are so young they don't know what tetris is. This makes me feel a bit old actually. I'm only 23!

I could say FPS has ruined the genre :p

But i wount i guess it shows how little knowlage aload of people have of the gaming outside of COD.

I asked a few friends who only play COD and class themselves as hardcore gamers and they didn't have a clue who Mario and lugi were. so i guess its almost as bad as not knowin tetris.

It's a game that is what? 20 years old? Give the kid a little slack. Its hey-day was long before he was born.

Also, don't blame him for never having heard about it. As his uncle, shouldn't you be teaching him about videogames? I blame you, for not teaching the little kiddo.

I may have an obsession with playing tetris friends online...

But not knowing what tetris is ... that's an outrage

I guess youth don't appreciate the origins of where gaming began anymore ):

(Not everyone, mind you)

Simple, yet very addictive, yes. And I was more talking in general, not just at this one individual.

Oh dear. Next people will be claiming to be ignorant of space invaders or goodness forbid, ignorant of Pong.
It's funny how even though video games have not even been around for 30 years yet (unless my maths is wrong) the eight-bit era is to modern gaming as 1066 is to modern history.

You just need to see this as a goal for you. Take your little nephew, and guide in the ways of the Force... um, that is, show him games, from the old classics, to puzzle stuff, to RPG's, and, as he grows older, to appropriate FPS' and so forth. Multiplayer will be your friend!

He may think some of the games are clunky, of course, but just think of the good you will doing him and the world in general. Good karma for all...

With the age he is it's a little much to expect him to know what Tetris is exactly. Now if he didn't know who Mario was then that would deserve a proper smacking.

Whats Tetris?! Yeah one of the only games I could actually get my parents to play. They bought us a gameboy when that first came out and we opened it up and it had batteries already in it. Yeah they had been playing Tetris non stop.
I think its the same way with music though too. You ask some teenager who Led Zepplin is and there like who? And I'm like yeah the music you were just listening to was them. lol
