Either you, as a veteran, educate the newcomer in gaming about it's history or you don't have any right to complain.
I wouldn't know what shenmue is if some famous gamers in germany wouldn't mention it every now and then; hell, one of them who's working for mtv now has made a let's play about the second game for the heck of it

So how about borrowing him your gameboy, nes and snes with some of your favorite games and comment about them&their history while he plays?Afterall, that was the time when gaming became more complex than what most flash games are today, so it's a perfect transition to modern games!

BIG fan of Pong and Tetris. My fifty-two year old dad even knows what they are, and he kicks ass at them!!! Much better than me >_>

But yeah, I'm almost 22 and I often hear teenagers a few years younger than me, and even college buddies who've never heard of Pong before, and thinks Tetris sucks because it's "too boring and simple" DX Makes me want to rage quit humanity (just kidding).

Times are changing sadly, gaming hasn't been around that long and we are progressing at a rapid pace. It's up to us to keep its origins alive, even if they were a scant few decades ago. With how fast we move forward this decade's, hell this YEAR'S, milestone games will be the dinosaurs in the future generations wake.

Troll much? Some would say that it's simple yet not casual. The definition of a casual game being defined how much money you pay for content and how much swearing it causes when something doesn't go as you wanted it to.

But I won't I guess it shows how little knowledge a load of people have of the gaming outside of CoD.

I asked a few friends who only play CoD and class themselves as hardcore gamers and they didn't have a clue who Mario and Luigi are. so I guess it's almost as bad as not knowing Tetris.

I don't think that knowing two Italian plumbers qualifies you as a "hardcore" gamer, but then I've never really liked the term "hardcore" anyway. Also FPS has ruined the genre? Shame on you! Do you consider Half Life 2 to be a terrible disaster? Or do you believe that the Call of Duty and Halo franchise have contributed nothing to the online gaming scene?

But these points are irelevant. The important thing is that if the cousin in question has been playing video games for around, let's say 3 years, then that is a terrible outlook of the future. How will we have builders and architects in the future if they don't know how to create solid towers?

I was considering it more as sarcasum lol cause yes i agree half life 2 is pretty epic. I also feel slappin the valve logo on things does help alot.

Being a Hardcore gamer is more like just being good at a certain game. I am a hardcore Doom gamer, and, with no ego, consider myself to be really good at it. However, I suck at Call of Duty 4. If they said that they were hardcore gamers, that means hardcore CoD gamers, not supreme lord of all game knowledge.

Everyone had a first time reading LotR, watching Aliens, or listening to Stairway to Heaven. That's part of growing up, you get exposed to stuff which eventually becomes a staple part of your culture. He did not come out of the womb loving those straight lines: It's a testement to Tetris' power that he has been exposed to it as young as he is.

Your nephew is young, so he probably doesn't have an iPod, or a phone, so how is he supposed to come across it? You also said he's into flash games, which do not make him a hardcore gamer who should know about things that came out before he was born.

Besides, I've yet to meet a young gamer who likes retro games like that.

Very nearly had to restrain myself from smacking the little smart@$$. I mean... is that how gaming progresses these days? Am I so old that Tetris is from a bygone era? Do the young have no respect for teh classics anymore?!

I think you should make him play Tetris for 5 hours straight.

Tetris involves making split second decisions that effect the overall outcome of the game. As well as strategy, as players have to plan how to arrange the blocks. Since the next block is randomly generated, it also has an element of luck.

That's a quite a few gaming elements, more than some modern games.

You can't expect him to know or love Tetris just because some from that generation see it as a 'cool retro game'. I get what your saying, but the same could be said about 80s children, raised on Sonic, not respecting and loving 'Pong'.
