How the fuck does anyone not know what Tetris is? Honestly, you should revoke his gamer card immediately.

Really? He doesn't know what Tetris is? How long has he been playing games and does he know what "internet" is? That really sends a message about how sad the next generation is getting in terms of games.
Or maybe it doesn't. Maybe everyone else is really old. Who knows?

Oh goodness... The poor thing doesn't know what Tetris is, you simply *must* put a good old GameBoy in his hands, and before too long, he'll be humming the theme songs.
Gosh, now I feels **old**.

Also, if he starts asking what PacMan is... That's the end of all things.
Damn it. You made me spend an hour scanning my home for my first gameboy and the cartrige but i got it!... now just battieres and prayer it works <.<

As for the topic tho, cant really expect the 'new breed' of gamers to remember and appriciate every oldie classic we played when we were young. Its same with every other part of culture, especially from the media branch and with the ammount of new releases in these days it probably is hard to go back in time so many years just to discover the old gems.

In short, dont slap - educate! :p

It's almost becoming a problem. Everything has to be really shiny and beautiful to be enjoyed by the youth today. Gameplay seems to be far less important.
and tetris has good gameplay?
Tetris involves making split second decisions that effect the overall outcome of the game. As well as strategy, as players have to plan how to arrange the blocks. Since the next block is randomly generated, it also has an element of luck.

That's a quite a few gaming elements, more than some modern games.
that's a nice way of saying ''blocks fall, arrange them''.

There's a reason its been around for 20 years, and is on basically every electronic device that can play games.
yes because it's simple and addictive(to some).

simple does not equal good.
In this case it does.

Its simple, fun, and can be played and enjoyed by anyone, hardcore or casual.

....Really? How old is he? I knew what Tetris was when I was like 5. Hell, I played it whenever my mom went to have a bath and the computer was free.

Well, to be honest, Tetris isn't all that great. Puzzle games have come a long way.

But, smack him for me, will you?
o_O but i love tetris.... always have and always will. So yes definatly smack the litte pests and jam their head onto all the old games, forcing them to play them. I still love, Pipe Dream, Cat and Mouse (not sure of correct name), Hover (hovercraft game collecting flags), Squarez, Space Invaders, Llama Tron and many many more ancient games that either dont exist no more, have different names or are no longer available on new consoles/computers

My first realization that I was getting old was when I read a little snippit in the city newspaper last year...

"On this day in history: 1999. The Matrix was released in theaters. Ten years ago. Feel old yet?"

Sadly, I did. To me, the Matrix still feels like a recent release.
That got me too... I still remember seeing it in theaters like it was yesterday. x.x Also, I still feel like Tetris should be common knowledge for anyone who considers themselves a "gamer." Educate your offspring and associates!

I got that just a couple of days back. Was making a joke about being worried about a girl out partying and therefore drinking to calm the nerves. "Aww, shit. Failed my fool proof sobriety test... Tetris."

"What's that?"

Died inside.

I swear if he goes and asks "What is Metroid" there's going to be a huge problem.
That's that bus riding game right?

...Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if he hadn't heard of metroid, but if he didn't know about Mario? That.. that's.. I mean good lord. That'd just be wrong.
I totally agree with both of you i go insane if someone doesnt know mario i can accept metroid but dont knowing mario thats a sin

You just need to see this as a goal for you. Take your little nephew, and guide in the ways of the Force... um, that is, show him games, from the old classics, to puzzle stuff, to RPG's, and, as he grows older, to appropriate FPS' and so forth. Multiplayer will be your friend!

He may think some of the games are clunky, of course, but just think of the good you will doing him and the world in general. Good karma for all...
you need to do this....... it's amazing that young gamers these days don't know about the classics.... i mean im only 15 years old and i knew about this when i was like 11 becuase i am interested in gaming and i want to know about the classics.

Does this not smack a little bit of hardcore gamer elitism (in a form)?

I say that as there really is no reason for anyone in the 'younger generation' (I'm only 22, urgh) to have heard of Tetris or to appreciate its importance in the history of gaming UNLESS they're into gaming as more than a hobby/something to pass time.

For example, someone may appreciate Football (kicking kind, not weird throwing kind) and be able to talk about formations, tactics and players but I wouldn't expect them to know that Uruguay won the first two World Cups or that the Bosman ruling was passed in 1995.

I only know these things because I'm really into the game myself, can the same not be said of games as well?

(I really hope that made sense)
