Well, it doesn't help that the Irish constitution and much of our law is a mish mash of Victorian and early 20th Century pious Catholic morality, and accumulated changes from decades of referenda on various issues. Referenda are basically an Irish hobby. We can't go 3 years without having one on something.

Yeah, one of the few things the US got right was the separation of church and state, and that's slowly disappearing....

It's 17 here, but personally, I wouldn't protest with it being increased to 25, just to stop every bloody randy teen from talking about sex, and being arrested and criminally charged if they do engage in the act.

Just kidding, though - although I do have a lot of protestations about how it seems to be seen as an immediately validating thing to have engaged in sex, and how much people discuss it. It's difficult to think of a more tedious subject.

Either that's a ridiculous safety measure or your state/country has the creativeness of a brick.

Where I live, the age of consent is 16, but if the younger partner is 13-16 then it's still legal as long as the age difference does not exceed 3 years. That makes it so no one goes to jail for statuary rape except people who are actually having sex with people who are way too young.

Have sex
Buy porn
Buy alcohol
drive scooters
and get your ass thrown in jail.

You can't buy cigarettes or drive a car until you're 18 though.
