But best game overall? That honor goes to the classic Street Fighter 2. It was balanced, simple, and yet elegant in it's delivery. Furthermore, there so many fun memories attached to it!
Spoken by somebody who has never had a Bison vs. Zangief match against a Zangief that knows what to do.
....a rare player to come across in my neck of the woods. I think I only started to face off against tough Zangief players when Super Street Fighter II came out.

DOA4

The reason the DOA games are so good is because they feature a counter system. (A good one). This allows the person to cause damage to someone who repeatedly does the same move to you OVER and OVER and OVER again.
I fin the game very challenging, but also very fun.
Except its only 'good' if you can actually do it. It is NOT an easy thing to pick up, and after years I so far have NOT. Also they have the cheasies boss ever so far. Teleportaion should NEVER be a boss's ability in a fighting game.

Soul Calibur 2
The first Soul Calibur was actually a bit better balanced, in my opinion.
I haven't played the first one yet. Have been meaning to, but I haven't gotten around to it.

i am going to have to say dissidia final fantasy...
Oh man do I ever have to play that game. I really need a PSP to catch up on a lot of sequels that I missed. Like Tactics and Disgaea.
Tactics is awesome (both the GBA one and War of the Lions. Never played the other one...).

As for Fighters. (hyper) Street Fighter 2. Ahh the Genesis.

I wouldn't call them "cheesy" just extremely difficult. Maybe the boss shouldn't be allowed to teleport, the teleports has never bothered me personally.

The problem I have with some games, mainly the last Soul Calibur.. Is that some characters are UNFAIRLY over powerful. Zasamel (sp?) is the CHEAPEST character. You can continue to knock a person around without them being able to do anything.
That's the beauty of DOA's counter system, while diffcult-ish to learn, it offers the player an opportunity to stop getting smacked around.

It's a tough call between the Smash Bros. games and Tekken (Apart from Tag Tournament, that was pants).
I'm sure when Tekken 6 comes out, the argument will become a heckuva lot more one-sided.

That's a compliment on the same level as "he's a great guy, he doesn't even molest children or anything". It's a bare minimum standard for any decent fighting game that you can do something about whatever it is the opponent does. Haven't you played Virtua Fighter, Tekken, Guilty Gear, etc.?

Edit: the best I've played is Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution, followed by Soul Calibur.

Of course I have, I've played MANY fighting games over my life time. They range from the first mortal kombat, to virtua fighter, tekken, ect..
I haven't played Guilty Gear, but I have recently played BlazBlue, which I've been told is similar to the fighting style of Guitly Gear.

If you look honestly at DOA, I'm complimenting it SO many because of it excellent counter system. You can counter grabs, high punches, low punches and all that jazz. It's not just something simple. It actually takes skill to counter in DOA.

So technically it's not a compliment like you said. It's a genuine, "this is good because it works and i like it" type compliment.

I'm not saying the others were BAD either. I like Soul Calibur, Duh i bought collectors editions, but I did see flaws in the games. That's all.

Super Smash Brothers Melee was my favorite fighting game of all time, but I am currently enjoying Street Fighter 4 and MvC2.
