I have no good gift stories. :(

I play plenty of freeware games though. The one I've spent the most time with is probably Knytt Stories. Not only is it a great game, there's also a buttload of user created content to keep me going.

Are you talking about games that we get like, for birthdays or Christmas or something?

Or are you referring to things like giveaways and such?

Assassin's Creed II. And judging by the sequel burnout I'm glad that it and Black Flag are the only two AC games I have.

It's hard for me to choose from the many amazing games I've gotten from people and sites giving things away but I would have to say XCOM is probably my favourite.

Half the games I have in my GoG library are free ones they giveaway every now and then.

Yeah I'm gonna say Katawa Shoujo as well. I haven't been that immersed in a story for a long time.

Only one I can really say is Borderlands 2 (for PC). Friend was so bored and wanted to play with people he bought me all the expansions and bonus mini DLCs and said if I played with him and another one of our friends then I didn't owe him anything. This was during my transition from console to PC gaming, so I was all on board (had BL2 on Xbox already but regretted that).

Reading that description on knowyourmeme... that game is just like, a coming of age dating sim right? There's not any actual adult content right? ...right? Because that's set in a high school. I'm not gonna play it either way but adult content in that would make the difference between "awww that's kinda cute" if it's not there and being just wrong if it is. Also they really should have come up with a better name for it if "Katawa" does have the same connotation as "cripple" does in English. Because "Cripple Girl's Story" is hella insensitive and offensive.

As for my favorite game that I've gotten for free it's hard to pick, my girlfriend has given me a lot of them over the years. Mm probably either Doom (which I got free with a PC in the 90s) or Killing Floor.

I think recently it was Hotline Miami over on the playstation Plus for the free game of the month thing. Good news was I also got the Vita version with that. Best deal I have ever gotten.

I'll also put Cry of Fear there too. I had to buy Half-Life to play it, but it was a great, fleshed out free mod I'd highly recommend.

Welp, that would have to be my favourite game of all time, Final Fantasy VIII.
I borrowed it off my cousin when I was about 4 years old, and I kind of forgot to give it back... yeah. I was a little shit. But it was totally worth it.

Yes there is and - hey, wait, don't run away just yet!

All the main characters are eighteen or older, and the sexual content is handled extremely well. Besides, it's a story about teenagers; lots of teenagers have sex. The sex scenes exist to serve the story, and never the other way around (at least in the routes I've played). If that's still too much, there's the option to disable sexual content, although that could lead to you missing some important story elements.

As for the name, yeah it's cringe-worthy. The project originally spawned out of a fan-translated doujinshi that laid out the basic premise of the game, the characters, and (unfortunately) the title. A whole bunch of people (none of whom spoke Japanese) decided to turn it into an actual game. They ended up treating the concept with way more respect than the original comic, but for whatever reason, they kept the stupid title. Not saying it was anything but a dumb move on their part, but there is an explanation at least.

It was a good game, all in all. Besides, it's free, so why not check it out?

OT: Definitely ADOM (Ancient Domains of Mystery) for me. Absolutely fantastic roguelike; I probably got more hours of entertainment (and teeth-grinding frustration) out of it than out of any other free game I've played.

When I got my first computer, I got a couple of games for free with the graphics card. I didn't think that much about trying them as I thought in my ignorance that they were for free because they were not very good. But then one day I got bored and tried this thing called The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind....

...and I was hooked. TES fan for life. I honestly do not want to know how many hours I have spent totally in Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim :)

I was about to say Team Fortress 2 (which is FTP), but then I remembered I was given the first Guild Wars (Prophecies) as a birthday present, and it gave me an embarrassing number of hours of play.

So, Guild Wars: Prophecies, followed by TF2, followed by perhaps Braid. I got The Walking Dead (season 1) as a gift too, but I haven't finished it yet, so I won't judge it yet. Seems good.

TF2 by far.

But with that out of the way, Don't Starve. Got it from a friend who happened to get two copies on steam.

League of Legends. I have spent absolutely no money on it. I have I think 4 skins and those are all from good behaviour things or ranked rewards.

I was borrowing Legend of Zelda: Collector Edition from a friend of mine when he moved out of town. I kept contact and he never once asked for it back (that's my moral justification) so i'm gonna be counting that one 'cause it had Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask on it.

I would unfortunately have to day WoW, basically when Wrath of the Lich King came out years ago, a friend drug me to a midnight release of it, and bought it. Only to remember later that he pre-ordered(and paid it off) it at another store.

I got a free copy of WotLK, and he let me borrow the first two discs, so I could actually play with him. Another friend of mine had two accounts, one he played on and one that was dead, he let me have his dead account which had a level 50 something druid, which I leveled to 55 and promptly started playing a Death Knight.

I played through most of Wrath (quit twice, came back for the last two raids), and played through most of Cata (Missed the first raid or so, played through Firelands, and Deathwing). Most of the time in Lich King was paid for by my friend, because he wanted a leveling partner, and I was content with my level 80 DK, waiting for raids.

Other than that? A handful of indie or freeware games that are everywhere on the internet.

There cannot be a singular game I call the best that I got for free but for free to play games that I have never put money into I would have to say Iji though I did also have tons of fun in games such as cave story and knytt stories.

I would probably have to go with either Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 which I got for my birthday back in 2006, or Portal during that one day it was free on steam a while back.

I felt guilty the other day about the degree of free enjoyment I've gotten out of League of Legends, so I bought $20 worth of skins just so Riot has something to show for themselves. With that out of the way, the title falls to a tie between the free copies of Civ V and Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door that friends have gifted me over the years.
