Steam. Also, endless backwards compatibility. Also emulators. Also Minecraft. Also Fallout's controls make more sense on PC over PS3.

Just a little thing I want to ask any PC gamers about. What's the appeal in playing on a PC over a console?
Want to know my reason?

Console:
Kiddie game
Shooter
Shooter
Shooter
Shooter
Shooter
Shooter
Shooter
Kiddie game
Shooter
Shooter
Shooter
Racing game

You get the picture. I left console gaming because its the same game every fucking time. I now get much more selection in games than before, and I wouldn't go back even if you paid me.
Really, dude?
You couldn't just give a reasonable answer, like not wanting to pay for a console after investing in a high end PC or not being interested in any console exclusives (you're missing out, by the way, not that the PC doesn't have some great exclusives too)? I've played a lot of console games over the last twelve years and only two of them have been shooters (I haven't bought or played a shooter in at least five years). If anything, the PC can be even more shooter heavy than consoles because it has better controls for them. I also don't play racing games except occasionally when I'm visiting a friend. It's kind of pathetic to just gloss over things like Demon's Souls and the huge number of other great console exclusive RPGs and SRPGs, not to mention great action games like Bayonetta, God Hand and Zone of the Enders 2 (I don't think Viewtiful Joe ever got a proper PC release, either).

If you want to defend your choice (and it's certainly a legitimate one), that's fine, but you can do it without making blatantly untrue statements and bashing your perceived opposition instead of civilly stating the advantages of your chosen platform.

In my cade its because I own a PC capable of playing modern games im not sure I could switch to a console, because its a laptop and the portability is a big thing with me

most people get into the controller vs mouse/keyboard when it comes to FPS, I think gamepad is fine if your used to it but its completley retarded for anyone not used to it or who prefers keyboard/mouse its waaayy more acurate
This pos ended the thread, I want no console fanboys and no PC zealots ruining such a pristine display of wisdom.

The mouse is incredible versatile in gaming.

Also, my PC is also a:
Communication tool
Education tool
Music player
Movie player
data storage device
News and information tool
Helps me gain access to paid work and also complete assignments
writing tool

I understand some of the above things can be done by a console, but not to the level of sophistication that a PC can.

I also find that onlines gamers are slightly more likely to be annoying 13yos on consoles then on PC.

also, we get free dlc through steam that xboxers have to pay for ;)

i use pc because, i love my laptop (bring it all over campus), so it is more convenient for me when im playing by myself. I also like TBS games, but the main reason is because a 360 cant run word 2007 :)

With this said though, my brother has a 360, and when it comes to playing with others a couch and controller is much more relaxing.

reading the posts its kind of funny since everyone picks on the 360/wii/ps3 fanboys yet the pc elite are probably the worst when it comes to assault. Its like atheists who vehemently assault religious for being violent

Since I'm primarily an RPG fan, you just can't play a proper, complex, detailed RPG on a console, the controls just aren't suitable and in fact the more complex RPGs aren't usually even available on consoles. And no, Final Fantasy games don't really count as RPGs.
In addition, PC usually gives you much better graphics, much more precise and comfortable controls (unless you really hate mouse/keyboard), and I prefer sitting at a desk to game, not on a couch. Besides, if I bought a console I'd also have to spend a fortune on a good TV to play it on since I don't watch TV and therefore do not own one. So a console would actually end up costing me more than a gaming PC, but for an inferior gaming experience. Finally, controllers feel really awkward to me and they make my hands hurt.

tl;dr
If you like primarily mindless action games, go for console. If you prefer any other kind of game, go PC.

if by mindless you mean has less than 3 excel spreadsheets attached, and proficiency requiring the time and effort you could otherwise put in a career or something

seriously guys, thank god i never read these forums when i moved over to pc gaming, you dont insult the intelligence of people who ask you a question

Because the PC has strategy games.

I like games where I need to expand my empire, building up economies, developing social laws and policies for my people, managing army cost and income, tactical fighting, diplomacy, etc.

I like games where i absolutely need to think before I do things. I can really only find that on the PC. I also very much enjoy mods and having full control over my machine and gaming experience. For example, did you think the item limit in mass effect was too low? Well on the PC you can simply edit the config file that comes with the game to increase it.

I get to play my games how I want to. You like controllers? Just plug one in and use it instead.

There are only two real downsides to PC gaming. The first is cost (in that it's more than a console, at least initially). The second being a real lack of local multiplayer games. You aren't going to be gaming on the same screen with more than one person, just accept that fact.

However, what it DOES lend itself better to is very isolated, personal gaming experiences. For example, is a horror game scary in your well lit living room while your roomates watch you and the other cooks dinner? Or is it more frightening alone in your room, with the lights off, headphones on and being able to give yourself entirely to the game?

Barring a few exclusive games, what does a console have to offer me that I can't get on a pc?

It's more work to get everythign going on a pc but you get more fo a reward too.

I need a good computer for my digital artwork which also makes for a damned fined gaming rig, so for me a console would just be an extra expense on top of that... plus controllers hurt my hands after about an hour... and I enjoy the flexability and greater freedoms afforded by PC gaming.

A few reasons I prefer PC over console:
1) I would absolutely have a PC anyway even if I did not play games on it. Word processing, internet, movies, etc. Not true with a console or even a TV.
2) Each game is about $10 cheaper, and since I have a decent laptop the games also look better than on the additional console I'd have to buy to play console games.
3) KoL, Nethack, Age of Empires, Quest for Glory, Baldur's Gate (the real one), every entrant in the Neverwinter Nights series...the list goes on. None of these are, to my knowledge, remotely playable (or at least playable well) on any known console and every one is a classic in its own right.
4) YMMV, but I'd rather not give any money to Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony if I can avoid it. I'm happy to pay for games, but I don't want to pay them just to be able to play games in general.

MODS DAMNITT
This.

It should be noted however since some people get confused, modding doesn't just refer to things like additional content or level created by the community, while that kind of thing is great, the best 'mods' in my opinions are little things like console commands or config editing that let you tweak the game in what ways you please to make it better, or even the supreme reason, in order to work around bugs within the game (you never have to worry about getting stuck!)

For example, when I play Mass Effect 2 I can recruit my party members in any order I please. Legion and Tali on Horizon, talking down to the Virmire survivor for abandoning you? Priceless.

What it really comes down to is...

Wait for it...

...

Personal preference.

Yeah, I know. Shocking. There are a lot of good games on consoles and on PC. There are benefits and drawbacks to both, despite what fanboys of either say. The PC can be a great system for games, just as a PS3, 360 or Wii can. Heck, if you're really just into it for the games themselves there's really no reason to even limit yourself to one of the current gen systems. A good chunk of my gaming in the last few months has been spent on SNES games. *shrug*
