I don't really like Valve either as a company - mainly I just really dislike Gabe Newell - but that doesn't mean that half-Life 2 wasn't one hell of a good game.

Alright why do we all seem to love Valve so much? They take a long time to produce a single game and yet they are never really critizied if the game was not worth the wait. It seems that they owe most of their fanbase to the Half-Life series which I have tried, don't say HL1 is better than most games today because it isn't, it's a piece of shit by todays standards and take off your rose coloured glasses. As for HL2 played it didn't like it, gun play was bad, story wasn't great, no real characterization and an over used physics engine.

My main problem with Vavle is that they hold so much gaming prestige and only release maybe 1 game a year, most of the time (in my point of view anyway) it seems that it truely wasn't worth all the effort they put into it. Granted I haven't played Portal, and when I tried to play Team Fortress 2 no one was playing it (that usually means it's not that great), so maybe I should try Portal though that probably won't change my mind about Vavle being a mediocre game studio with a fanbase that is completly devoted to them if they release a certain game within the next 1000 years.

Now I realize this will probably earn me a ton of hate from the community here, but you know what? I really don't care if I do.
You criticised Valve on these forums? You, my friend, have behemoth sized balls of steel.

I've been criticizing Valve on these forums for years now, yet I don't get any commendation for my leviathan balls of tungsten!

All of their games are polished I find incredibly enjoyable.

No, they don't release games quickly but I would much rather have that than an Infinity Ward company that cranks out games as fast as possible with only $$$ in mind.

The Moding, personal attention with their fans, all of this has been said by others.

Gaming ultimately about preference, you don't necessarily have to like Valve to respect them.

I've never played any Valve games, but I will say this: Steam has made my gaming experience MUCH easier. And for that, they get my support. :)

Nah you are entitled to you opinion. In all honesty I don't think HL is that great. They made a cool physics engine but I find the gameplay to have very little action and a lot of running from point A to point B.

But you really should play Portal, it will change your mind. There is no other game in existence like it.

As far as taking forever to release games, I say its better to take the time and do something proper by your own standards than to rush it out and have a mediocre game.
Besides making one game a year is pretty impressive. Have you ever tried making a game from scratch?

I don't think they've made any game that've taken long time and haven't been worth the wait.

Also, 1 game a year is too few? Naughty Dog release a game every 2 years, and not many people mind.

You were probably playing TF2 on the xbox. Hardly anyone plays it on consoles. The PC version of TF2 always has people playing.

They're good. Valve makes good games and I like them. If you don't, then whatever. No one's forcing you to play them.

You fool. You have no idea what kind of fanboys you've probably enraged on this site. RUN!

OT: I agree with you about HL2(haven't played 1) and Portal is great but has little to no replay value. As you said, they release a game a year. And when you do that games with little replay value or play time like Half Life 2 and Portal really count against it. Team Fortress 2 was great but even it had its problems(namely the whole Xbox thing, along with balance issues). Left 4 Dead is great but it gets repetitive. Online as zombies it's really fun, but why the hell didn't they make an offline mode of it? And lastly, the fanbase talks about Valve games so much that I've gotten tired of Team Fortress 2 without even playing it, and they've even started jading my memories of Portal(the few that I had).
Edit: 6666 get!
Edit 2: Gary's Mod might seem fun, but it, Natural Selection, and Counter Strike(which is basically a bare bones FPS) don't count since they were made by fans.

You're entitled to your opinion - YMMV etc - but that, here, has turned into rash generalisations. Sorry, I WILL tell you, without rose-tinted glasses as I didn't play it at the same, that HL1 is absolutely fantastic. Portal is amazing. HL2 is brilliant.

You don't have to like them but evidently the big deal about Valve is because most people disagree with you!

Valve.... let's see... makes highly polished games with very few bugs.... mostly free DLC / patches, updates, and modding tools, an industry leader with both Steam and VAC...

Not my favorite developer but you can't deny the quality and innovation they put out. If Bioware could hit Valve's level of polish they would win March Mayhem :)

They are loved primarily for their work with Half-Life. Additional factors include their willigness to snap up talented people with good ideas (The way they came about Team Fortress Classic and Portal), creation of initially maligned but now much loved digital distribution system/DRM solution where people can purchase great games on sale for a pittiance, and a history that does not include a single mediocre game.

No one has ever made a greater gaming package in current history. Quality, value, playability.

I'm gonna take it that the lack of TF2 players was because you were playing on a Console? Valve is a PC developer and they make games for the 360 due to a contract. A game every year is better then what most companies do as it usally takes Bungie 3 years to put out a Halo game and those are pretty damn good on there own.

The real fanbase for Valve live on Steam and on the PC. The Xbox games are great games on their own, but one doesn't truely know how popular these games are until they play them on the device they were made for.

I was trying to understand why you would think they're mediocre. I don't like bringing age into it, but i noticed you were born in 95(I don't have much room to talk only being 5 years older, but my point is valid nontheless). Valve earns respect and is revered for its games because of how innovative they were. Also every time Valve releases a game it's level of quality does not falter in any way which is very rare in this day and age.

I appreciate your opinion, obviously going back and playing a game that is outdated by today's standards doesn't always have the greatest outcome. Just next time try looking at it a bit more objectively and I think you'll be able to appreciate their games.

If not, live and let live.

if you cant find a game on team fortress 2 you either have no internet connection or you are playing it on the xbox. either way you are doing it wrong. in the last 2 years they have released left 4 dead 1 and 2. portal 2 is in development, and (supposedly) half life 2 episode 3 is in development too.

the big deal about half life 2 is it was one of the first games with a real physics engine. it also has a great story, loveable characters, and it also did away with cutscenes for the most part substituting it with cutscenes you play and are a part of. i agree with you i did not care for the gunplay. (i need to aim) but it still works, plus its one of the few relatively modern games with a freakin health bar.

edit: also - taking a long time to develop a game is a good thing. that means they are polishing it so it comes out with few bugs and solid gameplay and story. they are one of the few devs who actually do that.
