Best metalcore one? I prefer Disambiguation but even objectively (although I know it was very well received) I don't know if it's considered the best metalcore album ever. Botch and Converge could be up there though.

I would say "The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me" by Brand New is the best album of what ever genre that album is.
YESSSS!! I love you. I just call it alt rock. It's pretty much my favourite 'ordinary' rock album ever anyway.

Let me be the first to bring up rap/hip hop. Enter the Wu Tang: 36 Chambers by the Wu Tang Clan (a.k.a The RZA, the GZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon "The Chef", U-God, Ghostface Killah, and the M.E.T.H.O.D Man)
Ahhhh I've been trying to listen to more hip hop lately to expand my tastes. Trying to get into Deltron 3030 at the moment but I'll probably try out Wu Tang later.

That's another album I have to listen to at some point. I love "Only Shallow", just hope the rest of the album lives up to it.

OP: Anyyyyyyyyway. I'm not really sure what my favourite genre is. Maybe post-hardcore, in which case Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come would be its "DSotM". However, I've always thought it was pretty overrated and preferred At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command and Glassjaw - Worship and Tribute. I like a lot of metalcore as well, but that's harder to pin point. Converge - Jane Doe may well be it's pinnacle but many might argue it isn't really the best representation of metalcore. Then there's post rock. I'm not a massive post rock fan but I love Godspeed You! Black Emperor to bits and I'd say F#A#oo is the best in that genre (always preferred it to LYSF anyway).

ah the good old music debate

as for the dark side of the moon vs the wall, definatley the wall
that was floyd's masterpiece it went together so well every song was great and the mood it gave to the listener was that you were dealing with someone's emotional breakdown and that's exactly what they were going for.

Industrial.

Skinny Puppy - Last Rights *seriously check it out*

and a +1 for the pixies though i still gotta say trompe le monde and doolittle rock it's always surfer rosa for me for some reason

Either Sergeant Pepper's or the White Album. Both Beatles, both absurdly great in all definitions of their respective genres.

Well I guess for melodic death metal THE defining album would probably be At The Gates- Slaughter of the Soul since it pretty much pioneered the sound along with Carcass- Heartwork. As for the best in the genre... not sure. Those two are definitely up there but I also like In Flames- Jester Race/Black Ash Inheritance and Dark Tranquillity- Damage Done as contenders for the top spot.

Most of the tracks on the album are much superior to Only Shallow, especially Sometimes.

I just love the mixture of the gender vocals (some songs are sung by Kevin, others by Blinda, and some together) when it comes to Loveless, the whole album is just perfection burned on to a disc.

Human by Death, I consider this album to be a massive milestone for metal. Though I know many who will disagree.

Though as said above Master of Puppets is THE thrash album.

It's not my favorite album ever, but someone HAS to mention the masterpiece that is Dredg's "El Cielo." If you haven't listened to it, for the love of God, fix that. Hell, you could even just listen to this explication (hope I'm using that word right) and be awed. http://www.traversingboard.com/site-el-cielo.html

And as a fellow thrash fan, I'd have to say Rust in Peace by Megadeth for that genre.
For prog rock, my favorite genre, I think In the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson, or the Yes album.

Dark Side of the Moon is an amazing album.

For my favourite genre? I don't really know what my favourite genre is to be honest, so I'll give a list:
Indie rock - Arctic Monkeys - Whatever you say I am, that's what I'm not
Electrro - Daft Punk - Discovery
Drum and bass - Pendulum - Hold your Colour is probably the most famous and popular, but the most critically applauded is possibly Timeless by Goldie.

I prefer Fragile, myself. And Relayer. Great albums both.

My fave Yes album probably is Fragile (so far), but the Yes Album seems to be the big one everyone knows and talks about. But I could be wrong. I must admit I'm not very familiar with Relayer, I'll have to check it out.

Well for a best metal album ever it's have to be Maiden, probably Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. However, if I specify that to viking metal I think I'd have to go with either Turisas' The Varangian Way or Amon Amarth's Twilight of the Thunder God.

Close to the Edge is probably the most popular/famous Yes album, but I think Relayer is better. The big 20-minuter (The Gates of Delirium) is less conventional than Close To The Edge, but I prefer it. Then there's Sound Chaser, which is one of the most awesomely weird songs ever. I'd say it's worth a purchase (especially at the ridiculously cheap price iTunes has it at).

Good to know! I'll definitely give all that a shot soon.

I like most music but indie rock is probably my faveroute so its Kid A (radiohead) without a doubt...most indie bands in existence will list radiohead as a influence and its paved the way for hundreds of bands.....but more importantly...its a kickass album

Just curious: does that count as a concept album? I don't know what my favorite of all time is. Love both Quadraphinia and Dark Side of the Moon. Most recent great one off the top of my head is probably Green Day American Idiot.

I don't know what kind of "Genre" of music I should be considered to like (People tell me I seem more like an Indie music guy, but in truth, Indie musicians have music that can sound close to 60s/70s stuff than most bands, and 60s/70s is what I like the most, so even Classic Rock could be considered, surely).

But for Albums I like listening to:

"Bat Out of Hell" - Meatloaf
"Eldorado: A Symphony" - Electric Light Orchestra
"Out of the Blue" - E.L.O.
"A New World Record" - E.L.O.

For me I've going to say for alternative rock either "wasting light" or "there's nothing left to loose" both by foo fighters. For brit pop I say "defiantly maybe" by oasis and for more class rock feel probably "sheer heart attack" by queen

Foo Fighters are more or less just rock, its not really Alt rock. However I would still say that Wasting Light or The Color and the Shape over There's Nothing Left to Lose as prime examples of that style. Also on the Brit Pop Genre it probably goes to Oasis's Mourning Glory, Queen isn't technically Brit Pop as Brit Pop refers to 90-97 in British music in large part as a response to the American Grunge scene as but by Liam and Noel Gallagher, and Damon Albarn.
