You're not being very clever when you make the thundercats joke anymore, its old and wasn't very funny to begin with.

I thought it was a pretty decent movie, not the best thing I've ever seen, (sorry The Dark Knight still holds that title in my book) but your first point where you wonder about why the movie is called Avatar is in reference to the cloned Na'vi bodies they use to interact with the locals...that's about where the title's relevance to the movie ends.

In all seriousness though the moratorium on spoilers for this movie isn't up for another *crunches numbers* two months by my reckoning. So please put a spoiler warning at the beginning of your post. Be considerate some people get very angry when you give stuff about movies away. (I'm one of them but I already saw the movie) You may think your being cute by doing it at the end and saying they don't have to see the movie anymore, but it just makes you look like a douche-bag more than anything.

7) "The Humans were sent back to their dying world..." Really? So Jake Sully chooses to live on a lush planet teaming with life, while condemning his fellow humans to die off with their world... I dunno about you but I think this looks as bad as genocide to me...
I didn't take "dying world" to mean that humans were dying off. The movie makes a big deal about planet/nature as god/living being, so I figured that by "dying world" he meant that mankind had paved over all the forests and jungles and turned earth into one giant city. But just because the planet is "dying" doesn't mean humanity is. We can live anywhere as long as we have the right tech.

The threads topic gets out of hand easily. When I wrote this thread I think I made it clear that I did NOT think Avatar was a bad movie, only that it had a bunch of flaws. I don't mind ppl admiring the movie but seriously there is no way that this can be acclaimed as the 'Best movie of all time.' It had awesome CGI, but the rest of the movie had too many holes in it so there is no way it surpasses movies such as Up or Shrek.

I'm not trying to find flaws in the movie, not is it my intention to go around bashing movies that are popular. Basically the reason I started this thread was perhaps to understand why this movie left me more annoyed rather than impressed.

Also for those who had not seen the movie before you read this thread, I'm genuinely sorry for the spoilers. I guess I was assuming that everyone who wanted to see the movie already had - or had the sense to avoid a thread thats obviously discussing the "avatar movie."

I've always hated the thundercats. I didn't particularly like the Na'vi either. (maybe its humanoid bodies in blue skin that I find so unnatural).
So the association was natural. No idea if its been done before.

well I haven't seen anyone mention this, so...

Unobtanium is the basis of an old joke posting that used to circulate, about a mystery chemical element that was produced via an experiment that was unrepeatable, and was composed mostly of bureaucratic particles e.g. managers, administrators, subadministrators, etc.

So old, I originally saw it in '92 or something, as a Xeroxed sheet stuck to a cork board in college. I think it's been around since the 70's. Therefore I thought Unobtanium was a great geek reference, and the second best thing about the movie after the holographic displays shown in 3D.

Other than that I thought the movie was a waste of time, in fact I left after 90 minutes to make my Warcraft raid time. (Like that's not a waste of time). The comparison with Pocahontas is hilarious :-D
