Killzone 2.

I had just bought a PS3 and it was on sale. I figured I should buy it, see what all the fuss is about, so then I might understand whats going on in Killzone 3.

Normally I can't stand the thought of starting a series mid-way, so I always buy the previous installments and play through them first, before buying the sequel. This is the reason why I never bought Kingdom Hearts 2, or Mass Effect 2. I never finished the originals.

But I can't be bothered to go look for, and play through, Killzone 1. I can't find it in stores (but its not like I looked that hard for it, anyway), and, frankly, theres too many other games out there that I have to get through.

Well, C&C red Alert 2 was my first C&C game. And I've also got Mass Effect 2 without ever playing the first game.

all were good except for.... actually ill let you guys guess its not that hard.
Let's see... New Vegas is more fun than a barrel full of monkeys rigged with C4; Resident Evil 5 was pretty fun...but 4 was much better, and longer; and MW2 is a blast. Fun single player. If you don't think about the "story" too hard, it makes sense, and if you get past the fact that EVERYONE in multiplayer is a massive cock 'n' balls, you can have a blast there, too, so...I'm going to guess Res5.

OT: Eh...I think it was AC II. Very, very fun. I just wish I could permanently keep that two-hander sword I love so much....but a large mace will suffice!
sorry but thats where your wrong. everyone in multiplayer is a massive cock'n'balls except from in resi 5 (well except from that one guy) but i see your point the story was awesome i agree and the multiplayer was so-so its just the kind of gameplay and limited customization that dragged me away from it and back to halo. i think im going to rephrase my post to "all were epic except for..." and cod6 wasnt bad enough that i sold it like the other ones (sorry GoW)

Bulletstorm I guess, but I don't think it counts because it doesn't really have a past series,
or maybe Demon's Souls since I'm told its a spin off of the King's Field series.

It's a tough one for me because I tend to only buy sequels if I've enjoyed the prior games and if I havent played the prior games when I see a sequel I like the look of I will instead hunt down the priors in that series and play those first if I can to see if I like them. If nothing else its a hell of a lot cheaper to go buy an old game for £5 to see if I like the series than jump in to the series at the risk of £40.

Prime example, SC2 came out and I was curious but knowing Blizzard, having never played the first I'd be missing out on a lot of story etc. so I bough SC1 from the Blizzard store, played through that and then bought SC2 afterwards.

As for the topic, the one that comes to mind is Monster Hunter Tri. Never played a monster hunter game, just spotted it going cheap in store and honestly didnt know of the series, hell didnt even know it was a sequel till someone pointed it out to me. Its been... interesting I'll give it that. In a good way mind you, not bad.... but I will say its certainly not what I expected.

I bought S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat without ever having played SoC or Clear Sky. And I couldn't be happier with the purchase (once I modded out the ridiculous head bob while running). What a great game.

Just picked up Dragon Age II with no experience or even vague insight into Origins. I'm going along just well without it, though I get the feeling I'm missing some references inserted in to solidify its sequel status.

Gameplay I'll agree with, but limited customization? There's almost as many assault rifles as there are weapons in most Halo games. Just assault rifles and all secondaries combined, you have more weapon options. But there isn't just assault rifles, now is there? No. There's SMGs, sniper rifles, and the riot shield. Given, there aren't very many choices there, but there are still more choices.

The most recent Halo, Reach, also had little perk-like abilities you could pick up, right? Yeah, you get three (Technically six, if you count the Pro effects as being new perks entirely) at any given moment, in MW2. There's more attachments than I can care to remember, too.

You need one of those little suit perks just to be able to even sprint, in Reach, don't you?

Both have the same sorts of stuff (Goodies, baddies, familiar goodie weapons, exotic baddie weapons), it's just that one is set in Russia and Fictionesia, and the other is set in space; one has energy weapons (Which, for the record, I hate.), and they both have one equipment specialty: One lets you have a riot shield, and be a juggernaut, and the other has a jetpack.

'Nuff said there, Reach takes the cake in that section, because of the inclusion of a jetpack. But add to that the choices of primary and secondary throw-ables/deploy-ables, and customizable killstreak selections, and which game has better customization options? Don't get me wrong, they're both fun games, and they're both very different, but to say that any Halo game has more customization options than MW2 seems a tad ignorant. Although, yes, you can customize your armor in Reach. Armor color doesn't count, because of MW2 weapon camouflages, though.

Short version: Combine all choices of primary, secondary, primary equipment, secondary grenade, attachments, perks, pro perk effects, killstreaks, and weapon camouflage, with everything you have a choice about in any Halo game, and say, truly, which game has better customization options.

Final Fantasy VII (and, incidentially, my very first RPG I've ever played and certainly not the best).

Parasite Eve (it looked cool in screenshot magazines)

Vagrant Story (I liked the cover and I'm glad I bought it back in the day)

Crash Bandicoot 2 (it looked amazing in TV spots back then, the first Crash was pretty crappy anyways)

Street Fighter II (my first fighting game ever)

Resident Evil 2 (my first survival horror and the first game that made me crap my pants)

Warcraft III (recommended by my cousin)

Diablo II (recommended by a friend of mine)

Fallout 3 (after playing 3 and my video card got fried just a day after finishing it, I bought 1 & 2 just for the sake of it and I loved them a lot more than FO3)

Oblivion (absolutely no prior experience with The Elder Scrolls series, especially Morrowind)

Battlefield 2 (same with Oblivion, absolutely no prior experience with the past titles)

God of War II (I didn't bought the game pre se, but my cousin bought it because I told him about the game and neither of us had played the first game before).

SoulCalibur 2 (I knew that there was a SoulCalibur game for the Dreamcast, but I never played it before)

Age of Empires II (my first RTS I've ever played actually)

Metal Slug X (wich is still my personal favorite of the series)

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (I knew that the Zelda series were awesome, but I never played a single Zelda game before Ocarina)

F-Zero X (never played the SNES F-Zero and I absolutely loved X, but GX is a lot much better in every aspect)

Civilization IV (the start of a new love. Just one more turn, please)

BioShock (I didn't played either of the System Shock games before)

Quake 2 (I knew Quake 1 existed, but from looking at the screenshots I didn't liked it back then, but after Quake 2 got released, I liked the new screenshots and I rented the game for N64 and later bought it for the PS1)

Soul Reaver (I didn't know it was the sequel of Blood Omen after a couple of months later)

Dawn of War II (I didn't played the Dawn of War series before, but for the simple fact that it was developed by Relic is all I had to know to decide if it was for me or not. Also, who can't resist to a Steam sale anyways?)

Grand Theft Auto 2 (yes, I played GTA 2 before GTA Vice City, in fact, I played Vice City before playing GTA 3.)

Mass Effect (it was the very first BioWare game I've ever played)

i was talkin more about the gametype and map customization. you cant change the maps at all in COD. and i think the only thing you can change in the gametypes is.... players? but in reach the options are limitless. you can even make giant sculptors instead of maps. i see what you mean about the weapons customisation but if you think about it the weapons arent much different outside of their classes. the assault rifles are all pretty much the same just with small changes to thier attributes. the shotguns are the same. i think the only difference between weapons in the same class goes to the sniperrifle but they're all still pretty similar. whereas in halo all the weapons are original and not taken directly from real life( they may be INSPIRED by real weapons but not COPYS of them) and most have different roles. but anyway i didnt come here for a COD vs HALO argument im just saying out of the three games i posted COD6 is (in my opinion) MY least favourite.im not bashing the game, i do like it, but as far as im concerened it isnt the best. so lets agree to disagree :) *offers hand*

Mass Effect 2, Primarily because they only released 2 on the PS3, which is the only platform I could play it on.
This. Even though I have a gaming desktop PC that could easily run it, I don't generally go for playing fast-paced shooter/action/adventure games w/ only kb/mouse support (yeah, I'm that kind of PC gamer heretic, & yeah, I am aware of the controller mods out there). I scrounged up enough moneys for ME2 a month ago & am still reeling from the Bioware awesome.

On an alternate note, I sprung for an old PS2 classic, Suikoden IV, in the past week. While an admitted JRPG fan, I had little familiarity w/ the Suikoden series until recently, and I gotta say... uumm... it's definitely different from the more run-of-the-mill JRPGs available. I do like the naval battles; those are kickass :). I don't like the weird, uneven pacing of the story; it makes it seem like the studio/devs were trying to make the narrative fit the gameplay, and not the other way around.

I just responded in the Mass Effect "should I drop playing the first one" thread a moment ago. I actually dived straight in to Mass Effect 2 without playing 1.

A lot of people were shocked and almost disgusted that I didn't play the first one before diving in. But I absolutely LOVED it and I think it spoke volumes about the game itself that despite not playing the first, it worked. I played through ME2 about three times and it made me want to go back and play the first (which I finally did not too long ago).

The only problem with playing ME2 without first enjoying ME1 is you miss out on having your character and choices carried over, which was a big selling point and a fairly unique feature in CRPGs at the time of ME2's release.

Oh, I completely agree. My experience though applied to the question on the original post. I gave ME2 a shot without really knowing about about the ME universe at all. I don't recommend that to anyone else but that just what ended up happening for me.

I've played both now though many times so it's OK. :) Haha.

I don't know about the last, but one such game I bought without any prior exposure to the series was Star Ocean: 'Till the End of Time. I was in EB Games to buy a different game and the guy at the counter was telling me how it had just come out, so I thought to myself "What the hell?" That was back when I had copious amounts of disposable income. Anyway, I'm glad I did, I loved that game. Didn't care for Last Hope nearly as much however.

I just bought Mass Effect on steam. XD I'm slow to the table but I had alot of other RPGs in the way before it. So..yeah, I'm downloading it now, just 3 more hours to go!
