you know what it's like, you find a weapon in a game that looks or sounds incredibly bad-ass but fails to live up to expectations. a plasma-gun that just seems to leak brightly coloured urine out the end. a sword that seems to be the equivalent of a blunt tooth-pick when actually comes down to the nitty-gritty. a bomb capable of destroying an entire tin of beans.

the one weapon that really let me down is the hammer of dawn from gears of war. "the hammer of dawn". it just sounds so cool, doesn't it? like it could turn a city into a big, smoldering hole in a blink of an eye. so when i was aiming this awesome sounding weapon, i was expecting to unleash a small armageddon on some unsuspecting baddie. instead all i got was a a red-hot beam of sunny-delight that apparently scalded the baddie quite badly. most disappointing!

anyone else got a weapon that just didn't cut the mustard?

The power is in its initial blast, which has a radius. I've killed 3 players at once with just the initial blast and the aimer wasn't even on them. The beam afterwords is weak and nearly useless.

My let-down gun is any gun in Call of Duty before CoD4. I couldn't immerse myself in the game when I felt like I was shooting a damn musket.

The needler in Halo 2. I always thought that it was a very cool idea for a gun. Firing spikes that explode how can you get that wrong? Unfortunately when you fill your enemy with said spike and they explode like pop rocks instead of TNT as your target is tea bagging your corpse they do not impress.

At least it was powered up for 3. What a massive change went from useless to one of my favorite weapons for multiplayer.

Every single damn gun in Halo 2.

After Halo's bass heavy thunder cannons, with the screech noise the plasma bolts made as they few past you. I truly loved the Warthog's cannon, playing online (PC) you didn't need to see it to be aware of it. You didn't even need to hear the main sound effect, you could just hear the enormous bass rumble from half way across the map. Fantastic, it really got the impression of a firefight across.
I was expecting more of the same but with better fidelity.

Instead every damn gun, even the Warthog's death cannon, merely went plink plonk pew pew, as if they forgot to add any bass (or volume) to the sound files. I was mortified. Don't get me started on the SMG.

The smg was a fantastic gun to kill people with, just looked like total shit.

The Redeemer, in unreal tournament 3? I think it was.

I have to agree, and HOD was a letdown, but it *is* really useful. Also, battle rifle from H3. It's a nice gun, but unless you can get a headshot, it takes a half a clip to get a kill, assuming you don't miss at all.

The Spartan Laser. After the big fuss that got made about it, i was expecting something that could take out two wraith in one shot. Instead i got a gun with only 5 shots, that took two shots to kill any vehicle except a ghost.

To be honest, I'm pissed that the Portal Gun, "The Best Gun Ever Made" is not real.

Also, any weapon in Soul Calibur, save for Kilik's staves. You'd think that giant swords bigger than your own body would do more than make you say "Ow" and give you a boo-boo.

The sniper weapon in Halo. I mean, you only get to use it for a select few missions in the campaign, and even then it's just a side option, so you don't get that much ammo for it and you don't get to use it often. And even when you do, you need to spend a few seconds aiming carefully and trying to headshot someone, and taking the time to do that just precisely enough is usually too long in heated multiplayer battles, IMHO.

EDIT- 600th post!!!!

The pokeballs in Brawl disappointed me, not as many pokemon and the animation and attacks suck! Plus you could only have 3 at a time.

While in Melee you could get twice as many pokemon and all the abilities are awesome, not to mention you can have 8 on the field going at once.

This was going to be my answer. The Needler was a disappointment until H3. On the other hand, things like the pistol and several other guns in H3 are largely useless (at least in my hands).

I didn't like the sniper rifle in Killzone 2. It took forever to line up shots and it didn't zoom that far. It was a spectacular letdown after the sniper rifle in Resistance. I haven't tried it online yet, maybe it is better there.

The lava gun from any ratchet and clank game. It sounds so very cool - spray your enemies with molten lava!

Too bad it's just a squirt gun that fires what is apparently red jello, judging by the amount of damage it does.

The Flame Thrower in Killzone 2. It is the worst gun ever, and it looks so awful. It's graphically the worst part of that game.
i've never really got flame throwers in fps games. no depth perception!
