What's something that you've seen that was hideously mis-advertised? It can be a game, movie, comic book or toy or whatever.

For me, it was something I saw years back (close to twelve or fourteen years ago). Back when I was still getting Nick Kids Magazine, I repeatedly saw an advert for the anime TriGun, which was marketed as a kid's anime. Whoever made that decision was a complete idiot, or a sadistic bastard.

Witty Name Here said:
I guess the "Your mom hates Dead Space 2" ads, you'd either be old enough to legally by the game, but not influenced at all by your mother, or you'd be too young to buy it and think the ads are Awesome.
I agree with you on this one. And the kicker is that even if the campaign was designed for a game meant for kids with a T rating, it would STILL suck!

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, in the sense that it WASN'T advertised.

That is the EXACT reason The Expendables out-sold Scott Pilgrim on their opening weekends.

My brother bought this book about Krishnas after it was advertised to him "just like the movie 'Flatliners'". Needless to say, it wasn't.

For me it's most ISPs... they say they serve "8 meg broadband", what most people think this means is that they will receive 8 MegaBytes per seconds broadband, when in fact they mean (and say in the small print), up to 8mb broadband, i.e. the possibility of getting 8 megabits per second broadband. The difference between a bit and a byte is 8 fold, so in reality you get a service at best 8 times worse than what you thought was advertised.

There was a movie here a while ago (2001) called "Riding in Cars with Boys" with Drew Barrymore. The original trailer I saw made it appear a light-hearted comedy. Rented it one day to have a nice pleasant evening with the wife. Turns out it is a pretty heavy drama. Depressing in a lot of parts too. Was still a good movie, but we both were taken back as to how badly it was represented in the trailers.

Record of Agarest War. They advertised it as a hentai game. In actuality, it is a decent SRPG with dating sim elements.

Probably not the most mis-advertised thing ever, but one that sticks with me: Me and a mate decided to watch The Eye (2002, the one made in Hong Kong) largely on the basis of a really cool shot it had on the back cover, of a girl crouching in a checkered black-and-white room. That shot looked pretty cool. It was not in the movie. At all. And it was a bad movie.

I think we both consider that the most annoying piece of false advertising ever.

Hmm... Off the top of my head, some young/adult dark/fantasy novels.

They'll depict the character looking super attractive and cool/sexy on the cover, but when you read the book, you discover that they're actually not like that. Which is a relief, but, why do it in the first place?

Good example: Kitty and the Midnight Hour, by Carrie Vaugn

Dead Island.

You know it's true - the gameplay trailer was cringeworthy, and the original was nowhere near as emotional as everyone says. Even the CEO admitted it'll be like Left 4 Dead more than anything else.
The gameplay trailer showed solely gameplay footage, although I agree that I can't see the game being particularly emotional or interesting from a story perspective. That's not a definite though.

And it did look pretty funny, especially if you were going to play in co op.

Dead Island looks awesome, I don't know what trailer you were watching

OT: Eragon the movie, it sucked so much more then any trailer could have ever shown
