I once played a game called Sheep Raider for the Playstation. It was a Looney Toons game in which you played as Ralph the Wolf (Wile E. Coyote, but with a red nose) and tried to steal sheep from Sam the Sheepdog's herd. Sounds horrible, right? I thought so too.

To my great surprise, it's actually really, really fun. The game's levels are essentially gigantic Zelda puzzles where you use various Acme products and elements of the environment to nap sheep without being spotted. It's quite an addictive little game.
Holy shit, I remember that game! It was just amazing. Never finished it though...

Another would have been The Force Unleashed. I don't know why. Guess I just find it fun destroying things in increasing different ways constantly.
Why did you think the Force Unleashed would be bad?
I can't speak for him...but the Apprentice in from the get-go was holding his lightsaber as many would say "Gangsta Style", which is...so stupid...

Reminds me of that orange ***** from the Clone Wars TV series.

To answer the OP: Bayonetta. I was expecting a fun hack and slash, and found probably one of my all-time favorites, if not best pick for 2010.
Except for the fact that a lot of styles use blades that way and it has nothing to do with looking cool. ~cough~

Atelier Iris was surprisingly good. Wish I had the chance to beat it.

Ahh, so much nostalgia in this thread. That actually reminds me, I need to finish that again. Bought it off XBL. (Thank you!)

Saints Row 2. I was expecting a typical, gangsta' style sandbox game with the same, tedious rap music them kids like these days. Instead, I found a fun and quirky experience with actual humor and the best music collection ever.

Final Fantasy 10 for me, It was my first one and I didnt know what to expect, I think it was my first non platformer game too so I was worried I might not like RPGs. Now RPGs are my favorite genre, how about that.

The Punisher (2005). I thought it was gonna be just another movie to game piece of crap. But it's one of the most addicting game ever. And also one of the most underrated games of all times. It's so much fun it should be illegal. If you see it buy it! Do not hesitate a second. There are literally over 100 interrogation methods Punisher can use and killing people, interrogating them etc. gives you points. The more points you collect without being shot the more your points multiply. You use them to upgrade weapons and other Punisher stuff like health and stuff like that. There are also challenges and medals you can unlock and various comic book stuff. I must have replayed every level over 50 times and I still have the game installed. Levels are awesome, interrogations are fun as fuck. Story is pretty good, voice acting is top notch with Tomas Jane voicing Frank Castle and music is amazing. I think music was the biggest surprise. Listen to this:

Deadly Premonition. I read all the negative press about it, got curious, bought it, and had the most fun with it I've ever had with a game in awhile. It's the quirkiness that got me.
Why did it take 3 pages for this to be mentioned whereas Portal (AKA The most overhyped puzzle game since Tetris and Columns) has been mentioned at least 3 times. How can one be surprised that they like it if every reviewer basically felates Valve when this game is mentioned? Isn't NOT liking it more shocking? (To be fair, I don't like Portal and am kind of tired of hearing about it. But that's just me)

A game that fits this description for me is and always will be: 'Mercenaries 2: World in Flames'

I just adored the free reign and the ability to cause havoc on a catastrophic level with a plethora of different flavours of military bootheel. Between the hour burning gameplay, stellar soundtrack, crazy explosions and often hilarious skirmishes (putting aside the very limited selection of repeated dialogue) I found a game that I truly adored in the current generation which had been shunning me thus far.

Mass Effect 2.

The previews I saw made it look good, but the first game was decent as best (game play wise, I only played it for the story) but the 2 was just amazing. When I finally took a break after popping it into my 360 it felt like I literally came back from the other world.

A close second goes to Fallout 3. Once more, the previews made it look good, but I had never played the first two (not that it really mattered much) but I didn't expect it to be as great as it was.

Ironically, Fallout 3 is my favorite game and ME2 is a close second...impressions make a difference.

Singularity, even though people say it's too much like Bioshock, it's still like a really good game.

And the first Trauma Center, though alot of people saying it's really bad.

I played Sheep, Dog & Wolf which was basically the same except with Wile E. Coyote, using various costumes and items to get them fluffy sheep.

I played Splinter Cell Conviction on coop at a friend's house and beat it overnight. I've never played a Splinter Cell game before but that was fuuuun.

COD World At War

After hearing everyone ***** about it I was surprised to find that I absolutely loved the campaign and that the multi, while a little clunky, was good fun.

That's exactly the same as me, my two favorite games ever in that order.

And while Mass Effect 2 is clearly the better game on a technical and narrative level, the most fun I've ever spent gaming was exploring the DC Ruins for the first time.
