What's the Point of Anything?

Okay so the title's self-explanatory, but please note I didn't get dumped, am emo, or even depressed; I just was thinking about the difference of games in an arcade vs. computer/console games and brought me to the fact that video games generally last longer than arcade games. This, in turn, led me to think the following: what's the point of games, if all they do is take up time and give mindless enjoyment? This in turn led to the last question and the topic title: what's the point of anything? Getting medicine to feel better requires payment, why do people feel the need to be paid, besides the fact it gets them more stuff which inevitably goes away as well. My point is that, nothing on Earth has a point, doctors make medicine sure but doesn't that mean that any person could read and study their way to be a doctor? Not a good one but still competent enough to at least get a diagnosis HALF-RIGHT? Yes, I get it, "they didn't go to school" but that's just it; so many books have been written concerning doctoring that one could read enough to loosely-diagnose someone.

So, as far as it goes, I ask you guys this question: what is the point of anything if it eventually goes away and why people feel they need money for stuff that anyone could learn because there's probably at least 10 novels worth of information about them. There's no reason you can't learn anything yourself, so...What do you guys think? Please keep in mind I am NOT emo, depressed, or dumped lately! This just popped into my head after thinking.

I don't feel the need to acquire vast amounts of currency, I've been given some form of being and I spend that time feeling as good as I can and having as much fun as possible. (I'm swiftly finding out that requires a lot of money however).

It's all I can do, no point in wasting the tiny amount of time that I know I'm concious for to be wasted on feeling shit about things that don't matter to absolutely anyone/thing.

Humans are creatures of pleasure. That's really all there is too it. We make things to keep each other amused and it generally works.

No point to anything really, but passing time doing fun and entertaining and enjoying life for what it is usually beats figuring out our "pointless existence".

For teh lulz

*cough* no really as said before we are creatures of pleasure. And materialism.

There is no real 'point' to 'it' in a meaningful sense.

Biologically: Grow - reproduce - nurture offspring - die; that is your SOLE purpose.
Being (generally) as intelligent as we are is a mixed blessing: Our brains make us great at staying alive yet they also give us the capacity to philosophise and 'worry' about other things that are ultimately irrelevant.

As a conscious modern human, however, the only real point is to find something that you enjoy and do it...and if you can, do it without harming/negatively impacting the lives of others/the planet etc.

Either that or sign away your free-will, dignity, and sanity and 'get' religion: those people will be perfectly happy to tell you what to do and threaten the wrath of their sky-daddy/purportedly magical Jew if you fail in your newfound purpose.

The purpose of life is life itself. Look at living things, they just... live.

I feel you answered your own question with games, mindless ENJOYMENT. Would I rather do an enjoyable, mediocre or tedious thing? First please.

Learning? In theory I could learn anything but I doubt I could learn everything, I pay people to fill in the gaps in my knowledge.

I understand earning money up to a point, (i.e I would be happy to have enough money to buy every enjoyable thing I wanted whilst having no tedious or mediocre times), but I don't understand 'silly money'. E.g from an 'enjoyable life with no bad times' perspective what's the difference between 10m and 20m or those guys with billions....

Spend the day in a way that will let you sleep at night. That pretty much sums up my feelings on life.

This question has been asked for centuries, with different answers. Some schools of thought go the pleasure route, as pointed out above. Some go the intellectual route. It's all a matter of personal opinion.

For me, it's about self-improvement. We strive to be better than what we are to find a sense of fulfilment. Pleasure is a way of relaxing. Some would say everything we do is a step towards our next pleasurable experience but I think that's only part of it.

Of course, that doesn't really answer the question in its entirety. What's the point if everything ends? Well, we still have that animal instinct to pass on our DNA, to continue our species. Some act on that instinct more than others. It's a complex issue, since human society has branched out a bit since our more primitive days and other factors have gotten in the way of merely hunting for food, securing our welfare and raising a child.

I believe that we, as a species, can't really function with the constant reminder that everything will end at any moment (we've come up with multiple theories on what will happen after death after all) and so we can't really behave as though each action we do has no point. If that were the case we'd just curl up and wait for that time to come (after we've passed on our DNA that is :p).

Just my take on it. ;)

That combined with your avatar makes me wonder if you shoot up mob funerals or light sex traders on fire.....

I don't see any point in anything and that gives me the freedom to pursue a life most people might not want.

I found a joke religion on facebook which amazingly sums it up. It's called galavatised Inconsequencialism. The gist of it is Do what you want to do, when you want to do it. As long as it doesn't hurt anyone or stop other people doing what they want to do. Whilst you are doing it have as much fun as possible and don't care what anyone else thinks. For the universe is massive and effectively what you do in the grand scheme of things doesn't make one little bit of difference as the universe carries on regardless. So go nuts and enjoy yourself whilst you have the chance.

I don't, since I'm in college right now, but I'd do it if I had the opportunity. My ideal job is to be the Punisher.

That sounds like my kind of religion, especially the "as long as it doesn;t hurt anyone or stope anyone doing anything they want to do"

Well from the title of your forum I was guessing that you would take a deep insight into the ultimate question (And possibly get the answer 42) but instead I've found that this thread is centred around a disjointed, confusing and completely off subject matter rant about...medicine (What the fuck does reading books to be a good physician have to do with the universal theory of purpose!).

Aside fromthat muddle of confusion I suppose...life, you haven't got much time with it so you might as well have a few laughs while it lasts. At least that's the way I look at it, you work so you can get money so you can buy things to help you have fun (For the most part, I mean hell you could stomp around your house and pretend you were Napoleon Bonaparte for an afternoon and it probably wouldn't cost you anything) and you visit the doctor, eat, drink and sleep so your life can continue so you can live out the good moments (Rather than wallow in the bad moments for your one shot at living on this planet you whiney, un-appreciative misognysts). Way I see it it's a fair trade-off, work makes play all the better, eating and drinking is a recipe for deliciousness and fun can clear the senses, lighten the mood, increase confidence and overall it feels pretty damn good to have fun and be happy.
