Most are basically the same, [Eastern Country][Aliens][Mutants] is/are plotting to attack America/humanity and you a helmet-less demi god go out to kill the main threat behind all of this.

About 80% of shooters have this story and the other 20% are filled mostly with garbage (singularity, Wolfenstein) and rare gems that may or may not get sequels because they aren't household names (Borderlands).

I find myself not even completing the campaigns of FPS games because of the cut and paste stories and the fact that most devs spend the most time developing the multiplayer.

Because every now and again we get a great FPS single player campaign, Half Life broke that trend last time, wait for the next one.

That is why I'm waiting for 2011 to get my hands on Duke Nukem Forever and Deus Ex Human Revolution... also the man above me speaks the truth... play Metro 2033 it's one of the best FPS' of the current console generation IMO...<.<

Please stop stereotyping FPS... it's not nice to the genre.

No, not all FPSs have bad campaigns. Try Theif, try Deus Ex, and try Half-Life.

The fact that you're willing to disregard an entire genre tells me several things right away:

1. You're one of those members of the Escapist who spends the majority of his/her time mindlessly paraphrasing Zero Punctuation.
2. You are certainly not the kind of person who is open to any sort of reasonable debate.

Good day to you sir.

Yeah see, those are old games. I only have a PS3 to game on, I can't relive older games (my PC sux balls) most newer games are ass when it comes to their campaigns.

1. I haven't watched a single ZP show/episode/whatever since August.
2. I love hearing other people's opinions on things, thats why I made this thread.

Because they're fun. I dont have online so Campaign is the only option and 80% of the time I find the campaign fun. Black Ops, Fallout 3 and Wolfenstein have let me down but pretty much every game I've played this year thats a shooter has been fun.
Games like Wolfenstein arent fun because the gameplay isnt fun. If it wasnt awful gameplay wise I probably would have finished it. Black Ops was just a tad boring compared to its predecessors and Fallout 3 was ruined for me because it was all dull.
There are many reasons that FPS's are crap but its not all the fault of the campaign story.

Put it this way.
If a game has both multiplayer and singleplayer the singleplayer will almost always suck.
If a game has ONLY singleplayer it is much more likely to be good, I can't think of any solely singleplayer games I haven't liked.
As for merging a singlplayer mode with a multiplayer option at once, that can either be unneccessary, unneeded and ultimately pointless (Halo series, CoD 5) or brilliant (Borderlands.)

If you're talking about Halo and CoD and all their retarded children, I think the question could be amended to "What's the point of buying FPS's anymore?"

But for games that actually have a good story as their selling point (eg. Half Life,) I don't get why you wouldn't play the campaign, considering the campaign's the story that the game's built on.

Borderlands....a rare gem? BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Ha.

To each his own good sir, to each his own.

On another note...how could you pass up a mention of Bioshock. Even it's sequel was playable and somewhat enjoyable.

Uhh yeah, I HATE those games. I only played the demo for the first so I won't comment on it but the second bored me to death. I borrowed it from a friend after seeing all the 9.5 reviews it got but was instantly hit with a wave of boredom and a fake sense of being in a scary world. I can't put my finger on why exactly I dislike that series but needless to say I stopped playing the game and gave it back after playing the first hour.

seems like someone has been playing too much COD or halo, like some people on this thread try other shooters that branches out like Half-Life, Left for dead, counter-strike
as far as I know Valve is the only different kind of FPS developers
