Borderlands....a rare gem? BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Ha.

To each his own good sir, to each his own.

On another note...how could you pass up a mention of Bioshock. Even it's sequel was playable and somewhat enjoyable.
Uhh yeah, I HATE those games. I only played the demo for the first so I won't comment on it but the second bored me to death. I borrowed it from a friend after seeing all the 9.5 reviews it got but was instantly hit with a wave of boredom and a fake sense of being in a scary world. I can't put my finger on why exactly I dislike that series but needless to say I stopped playing the game and gave it back after playing the first hour.
Bioshock 2 got a bunch of 8.5's. Not sure where you got the idea that it was some kind of special gem.

If your problem is the cut and paste story, then Bioshock should have been right up your alley.
No on the contrary, I do love FPS's. When I decided to play Bioshock 2 I had just finished FEAR 1 and 2 and the atmosphere in Bioshock felt kinda forced.

Why is it that I HAVE to go into that dark room with creepy noises. I bet nothing scary will happen in there
/s

Playing as the big daddy character didn't help either and the music gave me a headache. I like FPS's, its just that most are starting to become fraternal twins, look different but are very similar in origin/story

(Terrible analogy I know...)

I made the edit for a reason.

The thing about the dark room that you're forced to enter is that you know something bad is in there, and there's no way around it. You have to face the inevitable horrors of that room. For most people that works, although Bioshock isn't supposed to be much of a horror game, anyways.

No-one liked Bioshock 2, at least not as much as the first one, which I still think you ought to give a chance.

Well, they familiarize you with weapons, gadgets and game mechanics before going into multiplayer. Plus the story can be quite good though recently singleplayer campaigns have been ridiciously short.

I hope I hate the first one less than I hated the 2nd. I'll find a copy and play it with very low expectations.

The fact that you're willing to disregard an entire genre tells me several things right away:

1. You're one of those members of the Escapist who spends the majority of his/her time mindlessly paraphrasing Zero Punctuation.
2. You are certainly not the kind of person who is open to any sort of reasonable debate.

Good day to you sir.
Naw, Yahtzee emphasized the importance of playing the single player.

OT: Yea, single player campaigns in FPS's have gone down the tubes, I still play them because they have some semblance of a plot even if it is just cut and paste. They usually have pretty good cut scenes too. I play them because in most cases the SP is fun and usually offers some sort of a challenge on the harder difficulties.

Edit: Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl is an FPS, yet that had an amazing single player (once modded so you can get extra stuff) The multiplayer kinda sucks though. Brothers in Arms:HH was really fun the 12 hours or so that it lasted.

Ooh, nice stereotyping the whole genre there. That certainly doesn't tell me to disregard your opinion like I disregard all baseless generalisations.

You know why? Because they're still fun. Overused plot or not, I usually find single player more fun than multiplayer.

Metro 2033, STALKER series, Halo series (I know I'll get raged on for it, but that game has plenty of single player to it).

I'm not even much of a FPS fan. I see your major gripe is with CoD-esque games. Well, I'm sorry, but you're not going to get a much different story considering it's in modern era.

FPS is best when you play it multiplayer anyway... you don't have crappy AI to worry about, there's legitimate skill and teamwork involved. That's why I love Team Fortress 2 so hard.

Its COMPLETELY different. There are no scary parts either.
...oh. I am sad, I liked that about the first game the most.

I find myself not even completing the campaigns of FPS games because of the cut and paste stories and the fact that most devs spend the most time developing the multiplayer.
This isn't just a trend in FPS's, it seems more and more games these days are suffering due to the devs focusing on some tacked on multiplayer mode. Assassin's Creed Brotherhood's story was about half the length of AC2's. Thank fuck there's not going to be multiplayer in Mass Effect 3.

As for shooters, try Metro 2033, Red Faction Guerrilla or Borderlands, all were very original and inventive in many ways.

Actually, I know a few people who don't bother to play the campaign mode. Usually, they can't be arsed to take five hours out of the hundreds they'll spend on Black Ops multiplayer, not even out of curiosity.

The games you just mentioned, ARE THE REASON I still play FPS. Metro 2033 is just really, really great.

"Sir, we got another one."

"Another what?"

"Well thread #1920201 of the I don't like Shooters that have multiplayer."

"Can we stop it?"

"It's too late..."

"FUUUUUUUUUUU-"

Seriously, is it just me or has someone else also noticed the hate threads for shooters gone up in the past month or so?

The OP(probably) never played(these games then):
Call of Juarez
Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood
Bioshock
Bioshock 2
System Shock 2
Fallout 3(arguably)
Fallout New Vegas
Call of Duty Modern Warfare
Half-life
Half-life 2(ep 1 & 2)
Seriously, mate, update your games library, and awareness of other games.

play Metro 2033 it's one of the best FPS' of the current console generation IMO...<.<
But I thought it got mediocre reception from critics?

But then again this would not be the first time the critics are full of shit.
Mediocre reception because (I'm pretty sure that) most of those idiots went "HERP DERP, XBOX 360 VERSION REVIEW!" instead of playing the PC version, which is much better. An option for Russian voices, the Ranger Pack for free, amazing graphics, it's just a better version.

OP, go upgrade your PC, buy Metro 2033, and play it on Hardcore or higher difficulty. After that, come back and apologise for lumping every FPS together in a massive "THEY'RE ALL TEH SAME!" package.
It's story isn't that good though, it could've been if they bothered to flesh it out a lot better, but all it did is left me wondering what the hell was going on exactly. The atmosphere on the other hand...oh man I haven't played such an atmospheric shooter in ages.

There are often different teams working on single and multiplayer, like how DICE handled Medal of Honor's multi, so the multiplayer mode isn't an excuse for the singleplayer not being as good as they could have been.

It's also quite an assumption that said multiplayer mode would be 'tacked on', which implies that said mode would be simple, cheaply made crap just there to give the game a few more hours extra and something to advertise with. Which is not the case in previously-purely-single-player-games like Splinter Cell and AC, whether you actually enjoy them or not.
