Then the best thing to do is to avoid games with that type of story. It's not that hard, I can think of about 10 just off the top of my head that aren't that way.
Bioshock
Portal
Half Life (and it's sequels)
Penumbra (and it's sequels)
Fallout 3 (if the firstperson counts)
Left 4 Dead
Quake 3/arena/live/whatever other titles it has
Wolfenstein (I liked it)
Call of Duty (I don't like it, but it's true)
Metro 2033

Like you said, not all shooters are like this. I saw "Bioshock" and "Half-Life" get mentioned, those are pretty good. But really, my reason: If you lack online gaming. Because then you really don't have a choice except for friends who you can play split-screen with. This was my problem until just recently. I still find split-screen more fun than online though.

Hello, and welcome to multiplayer!

On your right is insecure Mcscreamsalot, who protects his insecurity by loudly denouncing anyone that says a word, and cannot play without uttering at least 5 obsceneties every 30 seconds.

On your left is tiny midget, the under-13 who doesn't get enough attention from his parents and yells that his dad will hack you account if you abandon him at ear-rape volume.

In front of you is the team idiot, who is constantly asking you how to I reload, who just shot me, are you on my team?

And directly behind you, wielding the knife sticking out of your back, is the hardcore mute. He is determined to hack, mod, and glitch his way to the top of the leaderboards, and you never hear anything from him, just the death gasp of your character as he dies under the cold, unfeeling gaze of the mute.

Wonder why maybe sometimes people just want to be alone?

Oh yeah, and there are still consumers out there *waves* who just want to relax and sink into the depths of a non-competitive, well-crafted single player narrative

As for merging a singlplayer mode with a multiplayer option at once, that can either be unneccessary, unneeded and ultimately pointless (Halo series, CoD 5) or brilliant (Borderlands.)
You are talking about co-op campaigning are you not?
If I may ask what is so bad about that? I like co-op and play it with my brother and friends in every game that it is possible and really enjoy the fact that you can for once play WITH your friends and bash loads of enemies instead of each other. Just my point of view and I still haven't heard anyone who doesn't like it (which I get the feeling from your post that you don't, at least at the halo games, haven't played borderlands. Sorry if it's wrongly interpret) and I'd like to hear your side of the story.

It sounds to me you just don't like FPS games, or at the very least the kinds of stories they tell. You can't go into them expecting an RPG or adventure game. Think of them like action movies; short, sweet, and with a lot of explosions. You aren't supposed to get too attached to the characters, they just give them enough personality to make them stand out from the people you are shooting.

Yes, there are shooters that can rise above this (Bioshock, Metro, The Darkness come to mind) but if you are looking for a brainy story you are looking in the wrong place.

I play the single player games with the generic stories simply because I play them more for the gameplay. I like shooting up things, so to speak. The first FEAR was awesome in this regard, in just going around office buildings shooting crap up while occasional freaky crap would happen.

You get a game every now and then that you can appreciate the story from, but whatever. It's all about riddling things with bullets. Multiplayer isn't as satisfying as Single Player for reasons of the annoying players mentioned in previous posts and because it's fun to be the Rambo that kills everything and never dies.

Co-op campaigns can be great if they aren't just a tacked on addition.
I've just personally never had any fun playing campaign style modes with others, I'd rather just play it myself, but I still love playing dedicated multiplayer matches with my friends.

I'm not sure why I don't really like co-op campaigns that much, maybe because it sort of detracts from the feel of the game in a way.

Put it this way, can you imagine playing a game like Mass Effect or Doom with a teammate running around saying "Hey man, gimme ammo." or some such thing while your trying to navigate through a spooky corridor or have your character have a conversation with another one?

Because every now and again we get a great FPS single player campaign, Half Life broke that trend last time, wait for the next one.
Hooray for HL3! (too soon?)

Mostly to get a handle on the multiplayer that I shall be playing soon.
I always play the campaign to completion first, so I know I have a handle on the guns, game mechanics, and play-style.
But some campaigns I just enjoy more than the multiplayer aspect: Halo 1-3, GoW, etc.

For the same reason you, I assume, given the tone and question, play the multiplayer in an FPS - it's fun.

Everyone likes different things.

Because they are fun for the most part. They might have the same of everything, but the same of everything is fun and what everybody has come to expect. If you are bored of the FPS, go play an RPG. Simple.

I get your point on that one...
It surely takes away the atmosphere in some situations now that I think about it.
But it's still a matter of taste and now I got a new point of view on something. Let's just hope you did not destroy my co-op gaming with that :)

Your problem is that your only playing same-ish fps titles.

I know it is said on extra Credits but try espanding the definition of fps.

Portal has a different story and then how about fallout 3 and nv. these have different stories as well as different mechanics.

Some games are starting to move into the realms of 0-G physics so that brings out different things in them to. You can even find this in Shattered Horizon and Dead space. Of cause these have different stories as the later is a horror game and the former is strictly multi-player so does not have America in trouble.

Again though; try Fallout or the Orange box for different stories.
