Be proud and if they do something really horrible, wear a wire and turn them in. I personally love my hair (longer than shoulder-length).

Decided to grow my hair out a couple years back after starting to really get into metal, because I wanted to be able to properly headbang. After an annoying emo-ish phase where it refused to stay out of my face it's been fine (having naturally black hair didn't really help that either)... now it's halfway down my back, and I really like it. Other than my non metalhead friends telling me I should cut it (to which I say fuck off), no one's really bothered me about it.
I'm a male American with with wavy hair about to the middle of my back. About the worst I ever get is comments that I look like Jesus because my hair is brown and I have a goatee. Although there was this one jackass I met once who honestly believed all guys with long hair have a superiority complex and think there better than everyone else.

I always tie my hair up and put a hoodie on to hide it when I walk through my neighbourhood so not to start anything.
