Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth - not only the scariest game I've ever played but the only scary game, and by that I mean that you actually felt helpless most of the time and really scared for your character and not just startled by the random monster popping out of nowhere

Silent Hill 2; I didn't get past like, the beginning. I walked into a street and saw a little zombie guy warbling away into the mist. I ran away and complained to my sister.

Hmm, F.E.A.R. had a lot of jumpy moments, not so much 'scary' than 'dickish'.

And finally, Project Zero (Fatal Frame for non-Europeans) 2. I love that game so much and I'm bummed out that the fourth wasn't released out of Japan.

OH, OH. JU-ON: THE GRUDGE. That scared the balls off of me.

The first two Resident Evil, I really, really hate the camera angle, you just hear that somethings coming but you can't go and look.
And Silent Hill 2 was also pretty terrifying.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R (I'm that good that i put full stops) Clear Sky.

Midnight, lights off, sound up only have the eerie blue neon light and plastic case that reflects shit off the screen so it appears to be coming out of my computer, which will fuck with your head because you think things are coming from the side of the screen to gobble you.

But yeah that's just me..

My vote for the original Alone In The Dark trilogy laughs at all the Silent Hill and Resident Evil votes.

Ha ha ha!

For me, it's gotta be System Shock 2.

and that FEAR2 made me jump, but it was not scary
FEAR2 Suffered from "Let's scare the player every 10 seconds!"-itis. It's a terrible disease.

So yea, what he said. It lessened a bit once you get guns though.

Hmm... I haven't really played any horror games, so the closest thing I have is the Ravenholm level in Half-Life 2. Seriously, the screams of the headcrab zombies when you light them on fire haunt me to this day, not to mention facing fast zombies with no ammo.

Penumbra hands down.
Agreed - definitely Overture though, it was complete with pants-shittingly scary atmosphere even in daylight with the TV on. Black Plague was pretty scary at the beginning, but just ended up spamming enemies later on (for a horror game).
