This one's personal, but elitist gaming snobs who think that casual gamers are the scum of the earth and/or verbally brutalize you for like those dirty, nasty, overrated games that overshadow my beloved obscure JRPGs and alternative FPS games.

The Casual/Hardcore Divide.

Elitist PC Gamers already adding to the flamewars between consoles.

Fanboys, dedicated to anything they can get, they get infuriating and can only be cleansed with fire.

Microsoft Points, seriously, having to pay five dollars to buy a game (Geometry Wars) that its developers wanted to be free before Microsoft made them charge a minimum of 500 points is extremely annoying.

Developers who think that its okay just to use an established franchise (Star Wars, popular films, etc.) and not lift a finger when it comes to good gameplay.

WoW, it's not like the "Violent games are ruining our youth" crap you hear from the moral guardians with little to no good evidence to back it up, you have several genuine cases of behavior similar to that of a person addicted to cocaine. Now all the damn anti-game groups have actual evidence with which to protest gaming and try to pass unconstitutional laws against gaming.

Wii shovelware. The console still wouldn't be revolutionary without it, but it would be passable if third-party developers would take it seriously instead of treating it like a baby toy.

Games becoming too serious.
If it isn't about a war, it's about a lead up to a war.

But it's always been that way...

Space Invaders. WAR

Pac Man. WAR (He was performing essential recon as the guerilla ghost army hunted him down)

Pong. WAR (They were tossing a nuke back and forth)

On Topic:
The worst thing to happen to gaming? ... ... ... Gamers.

Let's face it.

Console gaming. Every (potentially) good game now has to be dumbed down to a level where it can be played with so few buttons. There are tons of examples of this but the one that really irked me was Thief 3.

Oh, and Halo was a good game. Those of you who claim that it's the worst thing to happen to gaming should stop sucking off Yahtzee and actually give the game a shot.
I still say Halo(Halo1... and kind of 2 but I cannot comment on 3 because I have not played it). I played halo 1 and beat it so I am not getting this opinion fed to me through Yahtzee. I was able to only get through about 30minutes of halo2 before I had to stop playing. The reason I believe that this is an atrocity on gaming is due to the wide acclaim (I blame Xbox gamers) and therefore set a very low standard for games.
In my opinion Halo had a good story however the game was below standard for these reasons.
1. Graphics were not up to par with previous games (half-life, UT...)And even with one of the best Video cards of the time my friends and I still experianced massive lag compared to using those same video cards in UT2004.
2. Copy paste level design was implemented in just about every indoor level which not only made the the levels look like crap but made the player confused and disoriented.
3. Multiplayer Coding (this is the big one) one of my friends actually CRUSHED a mouse at a LAN due to constantly spawning 3 feet in front of a moving warthog.

Like I stated Halo is not a horrible game in itself; it is the players that view it as the Holy Grail of gaming that make it the menace it is today.

People view it as the holy grail of console games, the holy grail of PC games is and will always be Half Life

The realism obsession. Reality is usually unpleasant and we will never be as realistic as reality anyway, so what is the point?

Well, the first thing that comes to mind is Epic Studios screwing over GoW2.
When the crappy matchmaking and lag finally got to me, I stopped playing for a few months only to come back and see they only changed the ranking system and completely ignored the matchmaking and connection issues!

Well so many disasters happened that I'm not even sure I have the time to name all of them but to give a few examples: Jack Thompson, Uwe Boll, RROD, Hardcores, Fanboys, Bugs, EA and more recently Activision, Halo 3, Sonic remakes/ resurrections, Extreme hardware requirements. I will not name piracy as it is not really a bad thing
