Ok, so you don't like the way the site is going any more, and you don't "want your voice to be heard here any longer".....ok? So...just stop coming to the site? Seriously, I don't understand the requests to be permabanned I'm seeing all over the place now. Is it some attempt to show them how many people are directly leaving so they have some metrics of lost members? 'Cause I don't think they're really going to care. Is it some form of protest? Odd format, since it removes your ability to have your voice heard in protest on the site that you have issues with.

Seriously, I just don't get this bit of intentional internet drama.

It is drama for drama's sake. It is people acting out for attention. pay them no mind, they'll be gone soon enough.

If only you can asked them, oh wait.

I'm guessing it's a last attempt to get some attention seeing how the people wanting the banned were nobodies on here.

Adding more to the drama, I would imagine.

I mean, why bother to vocalize your opposition and wanting things to get better around here when you can just stomp your feet and leave?

Just ignore them, they're not helping matters.

It's a sign of protest. A method that a consumer can use to put it bluntly to a company where it hurts. Hasn't this exact discussion been the cornerstone of a massive online spat spanning the last half-year?

Because instead of just leaving and not coming back, these people want us and the Escapist to know how much they don't care anymore.

'I AM NEVER COMING BACK... EVER!!! *slams door*'

Look at Zachary Amaranth... He just left in the quiet of the night without saying a word. That's how you leave.

Well, yeah...but leaving and not ever coming back is just as (if not more) effective and accomplishes the same goal.

That wouldn't have nearly as much of an impact, though. If it did, things would have been a lot tamer.

Well, what sort of impact is it really making? It's not really any call to improve the site or hold it accountable for the stories it chooses to publish or the actions it takes. It's just taking your ball and leaving.

Depending on how you choose to go out it could cause more rifts in the community. I'd rather see someone explain why they cancelled their PubClub sub/decided to leave the forums calmly and ask for a ban that way than go out in an expletive-laden blaze of glory. There are ways to make a greater impact without being excessively dickish.

What ban requests?
I'm going to assume your question is serious. xD

Randomly, in other various threads, people have specifically made a post, asking for the mods to permaban them from the Escapist forums, because they're tired of the direction the site is taking.

It's been the centre of attention for six months. This specific instance of taking their ball and going home is becoming a hot topic on here sufficient to get its own thread (and leaking into others). On top of that, I can't help but feel that the forums have slowed down and are a lot less enthusiastic than last summer, so there likely were a few more people silently leaving than I believed. Maybe the weekend will show me otherwise. I doubt this has escaped the attention of the staff.

The only one I can remember going out in a blaze of fury is this fellow.

Other than that, there have been mostly calm posts explaining why they no longer want to be here. Taking your ball and leaving can be the most effective option available as 1) it avoids cries of censorship (mostly) and 2) it shows the staff you are indeed willing to do what you say. That, and the people who left genuinely felt unwelcome here.

I will admit that I was rather hyperbolic in saying that more than a small handful people have gone the expletive-heavy route.

Honestly, I'll probably concede with you here on those points. As long as people aren't going out in that sort of inflammatory manner they should be able to express their concerns as strongly as possible within the limits of the forum rules. Sometimes it seems as if people are simply doing it to ellicit unpleasant reactions, though.

I have no doubt a few are leaving with spite in their hearts. Some are even staying with spite in their hearts.

I think it's a fair enough method. If you leave without making clear that you're doing so and why, then moderation/management/whomever may not notice. It's a straightforward protest-post, to make clear the depth of feeling.

Of course, the expletive-laden method is unideal, and devalues the whole thing. It's only worth a damn if you explain yourself civilly.

It's adding an element of suspense to the forum. Who's going to flounce off next?

It's like the last seasons of Lost where the characters started dropping like flies.

I guess? I dunno, personally I think the more effective way to make your dislike of a situation known is to...you know...tell people regularly about it, in a public forum...like this place. But taking your voice out of the discussion seems contrary to that result. *shrugs*

It's people who are heavily heavily HEAVILY overvaluing just how important that they are doing one last "grand" gesture in the hopes that people notice how super duper incredibly important that they are and how crushed the forum is going to be without them.
