Fellow Escapee's I would love for some feedback on this because I really don't get it and to be honest I'd like some insight to the hate that Halo and Gears get too.

So this is my problem, I use IGN a lot and on the trailers and previews and stuff people comment (like you do) and on COD pieces (no pun) there is so much hate towards it, personally I love the games and if it weren't for dues ex coming out next week I'd be working out a way to fix my black ops, but I read the comments and they are all so stupid for multiple reasons, from the the somewhat intelligent people "Why do people buy this game it never changes?" to the people who just give me more reasons to hate them "Anyone who plays this game is gay". I cannot for the life of me realise why people hate the game, it's fun, millions of people love the series, it's a given some of them aren't the smartest bunch but still the core mechanics don't need to change cause they work so well and then they are just minor additions on top of that to enhance the experience but at the end of the day the most important thing is that the games are just fun and that's why I buy games and most likely why you guys do but if you think you have a good explanation to why there is so much hate to these games then please don't be afraid to answer.

Also, Halo and Gears, is there deserved hate there? GOW2 was a huge letdown because THEY changed the core mechanics and I don't know why but Halo just get's boring after a bit but there still good experiences while they last so yeah what do you guys think?

I think its just that there are much better games out there that deserve CODs level of financial success and popularity.

You answered your own question.

Some people want something "different" and CoD/Halo just don't cut it for them.

Theres a bunch of Anthropological/Psychological reasoning behind this hate, which unfortunately I'm rather ill-educated in. Basically, people are sometimes naturally inclined to hate that which is popular.

For me, personally, I just don't really want to pay another large sum of money for what is essentially more of the same. You say that minor additions are ok, but really, its not; such a thing causes stagnation in the market, which can be disastrous for the industry as a whole. The last time there was too much stagnation in the industry (1983), the whole thing collapsed.

Basically, its the same as what happened to the music gaming market; people got sick and tired of more of the same. Change is necessary, innovation is what should be driving the industry. Which is why people get so excited about new games that look amazing, like BioShock: Infinite, which has mixed up the formula hugely, and Battlefield 3, which has unprecedented graphics (not to mention the main series has taken a step back in favour of Bad Company for long enough that people want more of what was around before).

Also, the E3 presentation of MW3 was, well, for me, kinda dull... especially compared to previous CoD standards. It was kinda all run-and-gun with very occasional changes in pace. If you look at CoD4, it was "HIDE FROM THE ENEMY!" -> "DESTROY THAT TURRET!" -> "OH SHIT ITS A NUKE RUUU-", etc etc; you always had a tangible objective. MW2, not so much, it was more stealth -> action -> stealth -> action, but still with some changes in-between. MW3 though? So far I've seen action -> action -> more bloody action.

It could also be because Infinity Ward, which had a lot of respect before, is now a shell of its former self; that whole shenanigans could easily have damaged the reputation of the Modern Warfare series, irreparably so.

edit:... Am I really the only one who bothered with a decent answer to the mans question? Sigh... I must be getting old, I remember when everybody used to write essay-long answers to threads...

I don't hate CoD, I never have.

I'm just tired of it now. I'm tired of the what is essentially an expansion pack being released every year, £10 more than any other brand new game.

Gets hate for same reason sports franchises get hate. Wildly successful, and yet woefully unambitious from year to year.

Because better games like Deus Ex Human Revolution, Batman: Arkham City, Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim are coming out

I'd just rather play a Timesplitters as an arcade run and gun, its far more entertaining.

Bit bored of CoD, and I'm also bored of the prices for maps, if people keep buying, they'll keep making the same game and charging as high as they can for things, so I decided to jump off the train.

Again Haters gonna Hate, if you personally enjoy the game then ignore them. I'm not a fan of said series of games (mostly because i have a hatred for Activision) but i let people who enjoy the game enjoy the game.

If you're watching IGN on youtube then it probably isn't exclusively CoD hate, a lot of people hate IGN because they believe that they hate everything except for CoD, so they hate CoD because they hate IGN.

That or they're just tired of CoD.

And there's where the hate comes from. Just reflections of the people who defend it without question.

And millions of people are wrong every day. Just because something is popular doesn't make it good.

MW2/GoW/HALO aren't liked by people who don't like two-weapon, twitchfire, waisthigh cover shooters; but that's what gets all the development money these days. That's why they're disliked, because they take an inordinate amount of money away from upcoming games from differing genres.

I think the biggest problem I have with COD is that it's had a rather chilling effect on innovation in the shooter genre.

Even with the flaws the series has (samey games, horrible "server" issues, buggy/hacked online play, and the worst gaming community ever) its actually pretty good at what it does. There's a certain savage appeal when you can put together that monster round where you wreck an entire team of opposing players single handed, even left handed. That and the multiplayer system that slowly doles out rewards keeps people playing. And that keeps people buying. Which keeps making activision crazy money. Which keeps people making ADS shooters, or at least shooters that borrow heavily.

This is where the most legitimate hate comes from I think. The effect the game is having on the shooter genre.

I don't hate CoD but it's looking all the more likely that, like Black Op's Campaign, MW3's single player has launched all semblance of proper pacing head first out the window... Into a sea of boiling blood full of crocodiles... After feeding it cake made of cyanide

Plus unoriginality and all that, i don't need to repeat other people's points

I guess people are just tired of playing the same game re-released every year.

Because its popular. Yup, that's about it. I like to refer to this phenomenon as "bandwagon hating": many people hate series with flimsy to no reason at all simply because they see a lot of other people doing it. It ends up creating this odd sort-of chain reaction where there is this one franchise of game that everyone just loves to hate. It just so happens that popular games are easy targets for people's hatred, and few games are as popular as the COD franchise. It's this weird faux-community building that is especially prevalent in the gaming community because of the widespread cynicism present in it.

As someone who has played every COD from start to finish, gotten all the unlockables and spent a good deal of his life on Black Ops multiplayer in this year alone...

Maybe its because while every other COD had really cool sequences in the trailers, in this one it literally looks like you will do nothing cool whatsoever.

I just noticed today that the games really ARE just rehashed versions of the source material and gameplay.

Today, me and a friend were dicking around on Highrise and we found a ladder by the cafe counter. We climbed the ladder and walked on a few of the platforms. We found the Teddy Bear used from Black Ops and the original Modern Warfare just laying there.

We were baffled that it was just sitting there, no graphical upgrades, no downgrades, nothing. I don't care if it's an Easter Egg, I think that's just lazy design.

Like I said, it's all just rehashed with something new thrown in the multiplayer for good measure. (Maybe we'll throw in a new mode, too.)

A good game is something that innovates and doesn't stay the same for four years.

That was my rant.

Oh hello there, you must be new to the internet.

People here like to hate things, and when a bandwagon gets rolling, they want nothing more than to hop right on.
