I'm not a nintendo fangirl but I do appreciate the choice to play a colourful and well made platformer etc in a world of grey brown shooters.

I haven't bought a Wii U as I find the line up so far rather uninspiring but I have spent a lot of money on 3DS games these past months. I have bought Luigi's Mansion 2 and Animal Crossing New Leaf (preorder) as directly Nintendo software. I also love the 3D effect of the 3DS and find it a very cool use of old technology (like light guns).

I just think people are rather unfair on Nintendo. They seem to me to put a lot of effort into every game they make and have a high standard of quality.

I kind of appreciate the Nintendo Direct announcements too. It makes me feel important to them as a customer.

When it comes to gameplay, then level design and gameplay mechanics are the key ingredients, and these are things Nintendo tends to prioritise above all else. So I would argue that you're moving the goalposts somewhat, praising one developer for achieving something, yet failing to see when another developer arguably does it just as well, if not better.
I agree. I never really play Nintendo games for the story I play it for the gameplay. As someone who collected every coin in Mario 64 and 100% both Galaxies let me tell you they definitely put challenge into their games, you just have to go looking for it. I believe this is also true of the recent Kirbys and getting all the stars.

No one hates nintendo. Just that they live in the past. They bring out a new console and the only things worth playing on it are the same games. Mario, Zelda, Metroid and the many spin offs (looking at you Mario) etc Everything else is worthless crap. This is how i see Ninty consoles - have zero interest in their titles, never have.

Now regardless how awesome there games are, its something i dont know. Though there are millions of Mario etc fans in the world that love him. But its just the same old same old. Ninty thrives on Mario.....without Mario then Ninty would be dead.An they have no interest in giving you new things.

I agree with you on much of this. I like the direct announcements and I also love colorful games. Pikmin is fantastic fun and one of my very favorite 360 games was Viva Pinata, if that tells you anything. I am also neutral when it comes to brand loyalty. My favorites in each generation were Atari, NES, SNES tied with Genesis, Dreamcast tied with N64, PS2, Xbox360. I have only ever bought Nintendo handhelds, as I have always found them to have the best libraries. My choices have been determined by the overall quality of games, which for the longest time Nintendo was a huge part of. I feel like the Wii and its games really pushed away long time fans because it lacked in this department. Others will disagree and your mileage may vary. In the end its all feelings and preferences with little logic to it.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that I hate Nintendo, it's just that the number of games on the Wii that actually seemed interesting to me wasn't high enough to justify purchase of the console and when I see the WiiU I just think "....why?".

Been thinking of picking up a 3DS though.

Nice to see a couple of people trying so hard to defend Nintendo though, gives me a nice chuckle ^_^

I really didn't like the Wiimote as a controller but I liked the first party games on the Wii. I kind of like the Wii U seeing that it has some potential but Nintendo botched the launch pretty badly. The console IMO is a niche product and they could market it a whole lot better. I also don't mind playing the same IPs as long as they do something unique with it ala Galaxy 1/2.

I wasn't keen on the wii controller. I tend to play for long periods of time and it just wasn't for me. I'm glad they switched back to something more traditional.

I hope they announce some better titles for the Wii U soon.

I'd say calling a game "NEW Super Mario Bros Wii" does nothing to project the image that is a spiritual remake of an older game, nor do I agree that it had a lot of new anything. The main new feature of the game was simultaneous multiplayer, which neither I nor a lot of people found to work very well, and in many cases be a detriment to the gameplay. If you don't think so, I'm not going to tell you you're wrong. Obviously this is a matter of opinions.
Thought you might find this interesting and possibly entertaining, regarding multiplayer in NSMB:
I've seen neat videos like that and they are cool, no question. The problem is that when playing with individuals who are not as adept, I very often found that we'd end up smacking into one another and both end up dying over and over to the point of utter frustration. I assure you my criticism of SMB Wii comes from having played it extensively and with other people. The more people we got together who maybe weren't as experienced in platformers as myself, the less we were able to do much of anything without getting scattered all over the place. I think a better solution might have been to be able to turn the character collision off and maybe even allow split-screen, much like how Sonic worked. This would have made the game easy to play and hard to master, which is always what you want.

I liked the ideas behind the Wiimote, but it would have been far better as an add-on rather than as the core controller. I went out and bought a classic controller almost as soon as I got my Wii. Despite what anyone says, having Nintendo fail is not good for anyone. Put me solidly in the group who didn't care for the Wii, but wants to see a bright future for the company regardless. The Wii U simply isn't giving me much hope. I'll likely buy one if and when they release a good Monster Hunter game for it, which was easily my favorite game on my Wii.

There are many loyal gamecube surviours who were scorned by Nintendos pandering to the 'in the now' crowd. And now that they have waned somewhat and want their old crowds attentions back they're being all 'nose in the air' about it.

And with good reason right now since there IS nothing of substance on the WiiU.

I don't get involved in 'x console is the best' and never have since my household was a mix and match of Nintendo, Sega, an honest to god still working Commadore, and later 2 generations of play-station and others. But you can see how with some people Nintendos cash grabbing from the fickle and easy led mainstream audience has left their older fans snubbing them outright.

Being stupidly verbose and overly aggressive about it is unnecessary but I will say as another person jaded by the Wii and not really impressed with any of the offerings that were supposedly for more invested gamers... I've moved on. I wish them all the best, but I am not interested in their wares nor can really spare the expense on them at this time, I was a gamecube user all the way up to getting Twilight Princess... and then my parents bought the Wii in their house, I tried buying a few games and playing them there... It wasn't a console for me.

I don't hate Nintendo at all, and I don't feel betrayed by them either. Every game their studios make has been made with time, care, and a commitment to excellence. Most of them have the ability to be instantly accessible to literally anyone, with incredibly difficult challenge for those who want it.

They don't insult the player. The games that are online don't have online passes. No crazy DRM schemes. No DLC out the ass, or microtransactions. Games aren't released with day one patches and can be beaten on day one. No bait and switch or smoke and mirrors, you always know what you're going to get.

Outside of the third party games that do exist, there's a certain magic to the games that people seem to either get or don't. Although they carry similar names, almost every new title offers a significant jump forward that plays with the new controller or offers a more advanced pure gameplay leap compared to the last one (not talking NSMB here). I refuse to accept that SMB3 is the same game as Super Mario World, is the same as Mario 64 is the same as Galaxy. They each take a character many people know and love (mostly from some people's earliest memories of entering this medium) and pushes forward what can be done from a pure gameplay standpoint.

If all you want out of gaming is the stories and the providing of a range of emotions the way movies do, I'm sure everything I'm talking about isn't your thing. But there's still many of us who get a big dumb grin on our face as we traverse seemingly impossible obstacles and execute masterful timing in Mario, or explore a strange alien world in Metroid. Nintendo is interested in what is possible with game mechanics themselves, and how the medium can be improved regarding player skill, timing, interaction with the game, and all of the art and characters that exist to provide pure glee. I bought Galaxy 2 because the first one was a giant dopamine shot and I couldn't wait to see what new ideas Miyamoto's team had for the Galaxy world.

Actually, I made myself sad by realizing how old Miyamoto really is. Nintendo, and all of us, whether you support his work or not, is going to have a crushing loss to the imagination and pure happiness in our medium when he leaves us.

Anyway, that's my say on Nintendo. I understand that different people want different things out of this hobby, and I understand that not everyone wants the kind of experiences that Nintendo offers. It certainly is a different world than when I was growing up though, when everyone got a 64 so they could huddle around a 20'' to play 4 player Goldeneye and be little "core" gamers. Different strokes and all that.

People hate on Call of Duty for doing the same exact thing with every game, and now people have finally realized that Nintendo has been doing the same thing, minus the DLC aspect which I praise Nintendo for not doing, with every one of their major titles for years. I think it was Yahtzee that said Nintendo has finally released their Cheat Sheet with OoT:3D, and it's true. Every single Legend of Zelda game has been running that OoT engine, or so it seems to me, since it's been released. Why mess with success though, right?

Whenever Nintendo does finally decide to introduce a new mechanic into their game, they make sure they explain it so delicately and extensively that it's literally falling all over the fucking screen for the first two minutes of the game. I'm hurt that Nintendo is going down the shitter, especially since it's what I grew up with, but I really do see they're on their last leg. They've put down any and all focus on making good quality games and put it straight into making some ridiculous gimmick that doesn't even really sell the console. The only thing i've done on the gamepad is scan, and spam combos on Tekken Tag Tournament 2.

Now this is where I attract the hatred.
Nintendo should, in my opinion, stop making consoles, and become a good third-party for Sony and Microsoft. Imagine what kind of Zelda game they could make on an Xbox or Playstation. It would look good, and since they don't have to focus on making the best damn iPad with control sticks they can make, they can focus on introducing and developing a new engine.

I don't know, maybe i've lost it.

I hadn't really seen much hate for Nintendo until I clicked on this thread.

Personally, I don't care one way or the other. If they make good stuff, I'll buy it. If not? I won't. I won't particularly be sad if they do go out of business, but nor do I want them to.

Oh, and also, Nintendo's main target audience is children. Hence the dumbing down of concepts and the lack of skill to perform otherwise moderately difficult tasks on other consoles.
While there's nothing wrong with the target audience they've selected, we've got to remember that this generation's children are utter shit, and there's no denial. Maybe it's where I live in, I don't know. There isn't a day out of my week where I want to clobber a thirteen year old boy who thinks he's a tough guy in his group of friends.

Two consecutive consoles that are just not developer friendly. It's getting kind of difficult to name solid Nintendo titles that aren't developed by Nintendo, and most of them just retread the same ground. The reason I don't own a Wii or a WiiU is that I don't throw parties. That's all they're really good for these days. Their 3rd party catalog is paltry and not at all my style, by and large. Monster Hunter stands out as one of the better ones, but I can't really think of any other great ones. The vast majority of their best sellers are either developed by Nintendo or are at least developed from Nintendo IP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Wii_video_games

That chart is incomplete, but most everything is either a party game or Nintendo developed.

Compare to the 360

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Xbox_360_video_games

and the PS3

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games#PlayStation_3

Certainly repeats in devs and publishers, but the majority are not 1st party developed.
