I had to be in this travesty for my school's musical last year as I was in Transition Year why would bring back bad memories of it? Now I need to go back to therapy.

I couldn't care less about everyone apparently hating it. I have my own reasons for loathing High School Musical, and it's that musicals make me incredibly uncomfortable.

Because a lot of people are pretentious, and can't stand "mindless dribble" making millions. Everything must have layers upon layers of subtext and reflect 'reality'.
This sums it up.

I'll even go a step further and say: People are jealous that the people in the "mindless dribble" have more money, fame, and success than they likely will ever come near.

As for HSM? It's harmless. It's got catchy enough music, and one of the cast members actually had a small role in an extremely good film - Milk.

It somehow reminds me of, Japanese anime openings...americanized, and turned into a movie.
Don't like it. Cannot see what people like about it. But since it sells, they're making more.

The songs, the "actors", the story (whatever it was), the whole wholesome americanism thing.......Now excuse me while I go and vomit.

Yeah, What's so bad about twilight too?
Actually, this. I see nothing wrong with HSM, and I like those films. I also like Twilight. I also happen to enjoy German art film The White Ribbon, Citizen Kane, Alfred Hitchcock films and the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. So anyone dares tell me I have bad music taste, screw them.

Basically, people are elitist and decide that because they don't like something, anyone who does like it is automatically retarded. Which is the stupidest justification I've ver heard anyone have for anything, save for religion (and yes, I am Christian myself, thank you very much). I have the same 'justification' used on me constantly because I like the TV show 'Glee' and my brother doesn't.

My advice? If you have an opinion, then have that opinion, and if anyone ever tells you that opinion isn't worth having? That person isn't worth listening to. Anyone tries to tell you that High School Musical is crap? Ignore them and carry on watching it. If you like it, that's all that matters.

[wanders off singing Wicked's 'Defying Gravity'...]
On that note, isn't it funny how so many people think that the opinions of others are theories, while their own opinion is a fact? For instance: "Everybody kept talking about what a great movie Slumdog Millionaire was, and how I just had to see it, so I did. It's not a great movie. It's okay, sure, but not as great as people say it is." In other words: "If other people think it's great, that's their opinion. If I think it's okay, that's a scientific fact."
Well, to the person whose opinion it is, it is a fact, said fact being whether they like it or not. The problem comes when other people try and push their facts onto others.

I'll be honest, I've never seen High School Musical, I liked the Mcsplosions in Transformers 2 and no matter how much I hate the blatant tone manipulations in Glee music I still find it watchable. Most people would crucify my taste, but to me, it's a fact that those things don't suck.

So long as I don't go around saying to other people that they don't suck 'because I say so and I'm always right', then there isn't a problem.

It depicts a very stereotypically pretentious high school with every sort of over-the-top cliche drawn in there. I doubt that any high school acts any where near like the one in HSM, and yet the directors seem it take it very seriously.

BASIC SUMMARY OF THE CHARACTERS' MOTIVATIONS
Jock Guy: "I play basketball, but I also wanna act. People will hate me if I act 'cause I'm a jock."
Nerd Girl: "I'm smart but I also wanna act. People will hate me if I act 'cause I'm a nerd."
Actor Snob: "They can't act, they'll ruin my fabulous image!!1!!! Everyone is stupid accept for me, plus I'm totally hawt!!!11!!one!"

That was pretty much the first one only, but the other ones don't really change much.

Plus don't even get me started on the TERRIBLE songs. I may not be into pop, but I tried listening to them without any dislike towards pop and they still annoy the heck out of me.

Whilst I more or less agree with you on your other points there are quite a few musicals that are actually quite good and I think that dismissing the whole genre on one or two examples is incredibly narrow minded of you.

OT: The reason for it's hatred is partially due to it being an example of the soulless pop churned out that floods the market and partially overexposure (seriously for a time it was fucking everywhere).

It's not so much about the movie as it is with the effect it has on people ..especially on stupid teenagers , like with Twilight .
The movie IS bad , but it doesn't cause me to rage , like when I see a Twilight fan saying his/her favourite series invented the term "werevolf" , or when I see 5th grade girls full of make-up and sparkle .
And the fact that these people REALLY do believe these movies are masterpieces and live by them like a code and I'm just frustrated that they can't wake up to reality and try to be original.
Am I suffering from a superiority complex or is this world full of so many fucking stupid people?

High School Musical came out while I was still in school. I had to put up with the other kids in my drama class singing the songs for a full year and proclaiming how it's 'TEH BEST MUZICAL EVARZ! ZOMG!!111Q!! XD =D' While it's not exactly a bad movie (or even a bad musical) I'm a RENThead and so it kinda pissed me off having to listen to a bunch of morons claim that a made for TV Disney movie is anywhere near as good as the musicals that ran for years (or are still running) on Broadway and across the globe.

Then they went and made a fucking franchise out of the thing!

I must admit that there is a small part of my twisted and blackened heart that secretly loves High School Musical. It's just so bad it's good.

Well, guys, it's important to remember High School Musical is clearly geared towards young children, so all the fake "feel-good" nature of the films is clearly deliberate. I don't like HSM very much, everything bad about it has already been stated before; wooden acting, plain characters, poor Romeo & Juliet references, and so on and so forth. But, at least Disney are sticking to their values to providing clean family entertainment. If its "ghey" to you, well, fine, but just remember, guys... um, your adults or teens. You have better things to do, and bigger things to worry about (a recession fellas) than harp on a Disney franchise.

It's made by Disney. That's enough for me to utterly, totally hate it, and avoid it at all costs. I don't support ANYTHING that rightist christian conformist cult spews forth.
One day you might appreicate the glorious irony of that statement.

I didnt even know it existed until everybody from 13-25 started to talk about it. Watched 15 minutes of it and pretty much fell asleep, too boring to watch and the cliche stuff just gives you a major headache.
