A big part of me wants to say its because of Nostalgia.
Nothing will compare with watching old cartoons with the wonder of a child.

Granted since they replaced the great cartoons of the past with things like "CN Real" and Cartoon Cartoon Fridays with that fried piece of shit known as "Fried Dynamite", I'm not so sure.

One things for sure though, cartoons lost a lot of balls.
Remember Courage the Cowardly Dog? That show had balls, and if you tried to show something like that these days, shit would hit the fan. I remember its last episode... god damn that was sad.

Both "Perfect" and the one where he lost his parents to that dick of a veterinarian. Both those episodes taught me that no one is perfect, and fuck anyone else who tries to force you to be perfect. And in the latter, it taught me to love and cherish my parents. Because they can be taken away instantly at any time.

And don't even get me started on Megas XLR. Whoever cancelled that deserves to be mauled.

Courage made my insides go cold at times.

It was a fucking awesome cartoon!

That and Megas!!!

They aren't funny, intellegent, creative, or even charming. They are just down right stupid. There aren't any real issues going on withj these shows or even any good conflicts. The story for all these shows is basically the same: idiot lead character has dumb adventures with vastly moronic friend/pet/thing. It's all crap! Where's the good stuff? Even though I'm not a big fan of the 90s, people sure knew how to make good cartoons during those years.

God I miss the 90's cartoons...back then, cartoonnetwork was full of adult themes and black humor...god those were good shows...Dexter,Courage,Invader zim,Johnny bravo,Grim Billy and Mandy, and soo many more...those were the good days...
Damn straight friend. I miss all of those cartoons and also ones that were not on that list like Samurai Jack, Rocko's Modern Life, Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, and Ed, Edd 'n Eddy. Those were the days indeed. There's no way that a show like Johnny Test can hold a candle to Dexter's Laboratory.

Cartoons have really gone downhill. IMO, mostly in the area of visual quality. Everything since Billy and Mandy seems to be completely lazy, just trying to make something quick, cheap, and marketable so that it'll be a hit with the little kids. Even some good cartoons like Dexter's Lab went down this road a bit toward their end.

They used to be mature, yet still accessable to children. They also ditched anything even remotely realistic and went for a level of audacity that made stories and conflicts excellent. Now everything is bland and boring, jokes are mostly slapstick or predictable and characters are cookie-cutter copies of every other character on TV. Stories have no engaging conflicts, and there's nothing dark about the stories.

Anybody notice anything?
One reuses scenes over and over and has bland fights, while the other has very accurate fight scenes and actual quips?

I've always said the only reason we like old cartoons more than new cartoons is because we arn't kids anymore. My parents always said that the cartoons I watched were crap compared to their ones and I'm sure their parents said the same. If we were kids now then we would enjoy the cartoons we have and when we grew up we would complain about the exact same thing.

The problem with cartoons these days is that they're not Tom & Jerry.

Seriously though, I'm not sure what it is, but I think, as other people have mentioned it, that cartoons would treat kids as more mature than they are as well as including some stuff kids might not understand just yet; it wasn't as heavily scrutinized by the helicopter-moms of today's young kids who believe that everything is out to turn their precious, fragile little child into a drug-addicted serial rapist and murderer. These parents seem to think that using legislation to affect what their child sees, instead, of spending time with their own children and teaching them (you know, some actual parenting.)

By the way, the Sam & Max games are a great example of that kind of humour that doesn't happen very often, you guys should check those out.

To think about it, you are completely right.
Cartoons have had such a decline from the 90s. The best in recent memory being Samurai Jack, Danny Phantom, and the ill fated, short lived series of Code Monkeys.

However, the future isn't looking as bleak with the new releases of Generator Rex and Adventure Time. As far as what I'd like back, Give me the final season of Reboot or Darkwing Duck. Canceled for progressively dark themes unbecoming of a Saturday morning cartoon show my butt.

I'm singing my nostalgia song. It goes to the tune of Tom Lehrer's 'Pollution' and explains why we thought our childhoods were much more awesome.

Anywho, two of my favourite cartoons ever are post 2004, Kim Possible and Teen Titans.

I found that as I got older and saw that most people making shows (cartoon and otherwise) seemed to think that true art needed to be angsty, and anyone who told a joke that wasn't gallows humour needed to be shot, and the whole thing needed to take a dive down Cerberus way, I got bored of almost all media, and wanted something which at least tried to be cheerful and upbeat.

Thus I found KP and TT, and I think they hold up perfectly well alongside the cartoons I watched as a kid.

I really dislike a lot of the new cartoons, particularly ones like Chowder. Some of my favourites were, and still are Animaniacs, Samurai Jack, Pinky and the Brain, Bus Bunny and Tweety, and other shows like that. Some shows still have some good humour in them, though. I remember one episode of Spongebob had a brilliant bit of satire regarding work vs prison, if I can find it I'll post it

Cartoons today are marketed to children. Thats just it. CHILDREN. Back in the day you taught Dexter and Johnny Bravo was the bomb [and they were seriously, I'm still technically within cartoons demographic right now, and even I think that those were cool.] but your parents probably said "What every happened to Yogi and Bugs Bunny?" Stuff happens. Right now the only cartoons [for kids, American Dad ROCKS.] that I watch are Flapjack [Great nightmare material] and adventure time [because it is so random.]Understand being a kid born 3 years ago, you don't know Fanboy is Johnny, Chowder is Dexter, etc. Different Generations = Different Stuff on television.

Phineas and Ferb is really good. While it is extremely mindless, with every epicode having the same plot, it is actually pretty funny and has a lot of hidden pop culture references.

God damn it why do they feel the need to always make new versions of cartoons in that horrible quasi-anime art style? Like with Transformers Armada, great storylines, awful animation.

If I wanted to watch anime (which I don't) I'd watch some fucking anime (which I won't), stop trying to rip off another cultures art style just because it's in vogue at the minute, ten years from now this shit is going to look so dated.
