I've always said the only reason we like old cartoons more than new cartoons is because we arn't kids anymore. My parents always said that the cartoons I watched were crap compared to their ones and I'm sure their parents said the same. If we were kids now then we would enjoy the cartoons we have and when we grew up we would complain about the exact same thing.
Unless cartoons really are being dumbed down.
Though that can be said for many television shows, but especially for cartoons. They are becoming too 'safe' and PC. As if all kids want are flashing colors and characters that are annoyingly hyper.

I still watch cartoons, but many of them have no enjoyable plot or problem for the characters to overcome.

They need to remember that cartoons are not just for kids. Looney Tunes proves this, yet that fact is being forgotten.

EDIT: Favorite cartoons; Dino Riders, Beast Wars, As Told By Ginger, Looney Tunes, G.I. Joe, Animaniacs, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Pink Panther, Doug... too many to want to list

To think about it, you are completely right.
Cartoons have had such a decline from the 90s. The best in recent memory being Samurai Jack, Danny Phantom, and the ill fated, short lived series of Code Monkeys.

However, the future isn't looking as bleak with the new releases of Generator Rex and Adventure Time. As far as what I'd like back, Give me the final season of Reboot or Darkwing Duck. Canceled for progressively dark themes unbecoming of a Saturday morning cartoon show my butt.
....:O Samurai Jack? I used to watch that so many times! You gave me a flash back xD. At first I wondered what you were on about, using google images to see what it was.

Than BAM it hit me, samurai jack? My god the memorys! NOSSSTAALLGIIAAA.

Oh and anyone remember catdog? Oh brilliant! absolutely brilliant!!

Except for a few brilliant exceptions (Chowder, Flapjack, Avatar and a few others), I'd say the problem is lack of creativity and/or inspiration. That's the main reason I've come to enjoy Anime more these days. Whatever else you can say about them, the Japanese are definitely creative.

Funny Thing:

I positively hate:

Fanboy & ChumChum, Flapjack, and Chowder.

But I also hated Johnny Bravo with a passion.

Possibly because the first time I saw it was when Animaniacs was suppose to be on.

Who remembers Sherlock Holmes in The 22nd Century? God, I loved that show. My Saturday Morning:

Spiderman, Sherlock Holmes, Animaniacs, Animaniacs, Looney Tunes, and then finish it up with some Pinky And The Brain.

American cartoons aren't even worth watching anymore. The new shit is just...shit. Anime is where its at.

I think the main problem with modern cartoons is that they all seem to want to be either Gargoyles (serious storytelling and action) or SpongeBob (random-ass stoner humor). The ones that go for Gargoyles can be pretty friggin' awesome (Justice League, Samurai Jack, Spectacular Spider-Man, Avatar: The Last Airbender), while the ones that go for SpongeBob...well, if you're into that kind of humor, then that's your own problem.

Of course, none of the shows I listed are on anymore, so...yeah.

(Can't BELIEVE they cancelled Spectacular Spider-Man. Whoever's responsible deserves to go to the same circle of Hell where the Fox executive who screwed Firefly's headed.)

Remarkably better production values?
Spectacular spiderman was actually really good, I thought. There were just little things that kept pissing me off. Venom episodes were unbearable because eddie brock was an intolerable prick who kept saying bro all acusingly and shit god it was so awful. But other than that it was really good.

I remember my childhood cartoons fondly, but I do not want to revisit them. I don't want the memories I have of the original Transformers, G.I. Joe and Thundercats cartoons ruined by watching them and realizing that the animation was atrocious, the voice acting horrid and the plots were nothing more than an excuse to sell more toys.
I wish I had seen this post about a year and a half ago. I went out and bought the entire Thundercats cartoon, since I remember it being my absolute favorite cartoon when I was growing up.

I did not remember almost every episode ending with them outside Cat's Lair, talking about what they learned and then laughing as the camera pans out.

I also forgot how fucking irritating Snarf is.

I bet if Disney re-rated their old movies, most would get a pg-13 rating. Look at Lion King, Simba's dad dies in it! I don't think any writer would have to balls to write something like that and market it for kids today. Not to mention back in the day cartoon writers had to have a brain to make a decent show that was family friendly. Note family friendly not just for kids but also for their parents. Kids are entertained by anything even if they don't get it. Also if they didn't get something they can ask someone else and learn something. Companies today find it cheaper to flash different colours and call it a show, and people wonder why so many kids have A.D.H.D.
Wow just saw your avatar, now theres a finger print on my screen, thanks man.

The first thing I noticed was that the music in the old intro is 1000x better than the new into. Besides that, not a lot, besides the new intro just seems.. gay.

Even though it's not terribly kid friendly, The Venture Brothers is always a good watch. If you didn't/don't tear up at the end up the first season, you actually have no soul.

Western cartoon creators got the Anime bug. In other words; blame Pokemon.

Look at stuff such as Ben 10. You can see the anime influence all over them.

That's not to say there weren't any bad kids shows 10 or 20 years ago though.

Gargoyles was sweet.

Samurai jack was sweet and was removed due to death.

The spectacular spiderman... I can't agree with you. It was, "the amazing spiderman" bad.

And they ruined batman. Brve and the bold can suck my dick, or so they say.

OH, I love The Brave and the Bold. It's a funny tribute to the comics of yore. I loved the Red Cyclone Christmas episode!

People seem to forget that the comical, non-grrdark Batman was exactly how he started out! He wasn't "ruined", he returned to his roots!

Most (at least the comical ones) cartoons nowadays never take any chances, they only make jokes that the kids would actually understand and they don't try to evoke anything but laughter. Ofcourse these cartoons are meant for kids, and that's just what kids want, I guess. My 12 year old sister loved the new Cartoon Network cartoons and watched them every day so it works for them.

I miss cartoons like Courage the Cowardly Dog, that could make you laugh, frighten you, and bum you out, sometimes all in the same episode.
I was halfway through watching the whole series again until friggen Youtube deleted them all.
