[HEADING=1]INJUSTICE LEAGUE[br]ASKS[br][small]-What is Your Alternative Game of the Year?-[/small][/HEADING]
Inustice League Asks: What Was Your Game of the Year 2013, Injustice style!

It's that time of year again, the time for resolutions we won't keep, the time for everybody and their damn horse to make a fucking top 10, the time for it all to fall into chaos as we desperately try to find gifts for "loved" ones who we only ever consider at this time of the year!

To relieve the stresses of this time we have concluded to come inquisite enquire as to your personal favourite game this year!
The game does not have to have been released this year, only first played by you this year, maybe an old gem you picked up at a junk store, or perhaps a long ago impulse purchased indie title on Steam was finally dusted off and played for the first time.
Barring of course the large triple A titles of the year that most of us have played and were selected as GOTY candidates by every site and major publication.

The best game I played this year that wasn't a major GOTY contender was probably Singularity. The game genuinely surprised me and I enjoyed the hell out of it, it had an engaging story and good characters and excellent shooting mechanics and just the right balance of old and new. A decidedly underated modern gem if you ask me.

What about you guys?

Seriously you should read.

...

Fine.

What's the best game you played for the first time this year? Can be from any time, barring only this years big releases such as GTAV, Saints Row 4, Pokemon X and Y, COD, Battlefield 4, etc.

I'm going to be utterly mainstream and say Grand Theft Auto V. I didn't get to play it as much as I would have liked since I was lent it by a mate but I absolutely fell in love with the morally dissolute protagonists and the sickeningly colourful satire. stunning scenery, lovingly crafted world, beautifully dark and blunt atmosphere. Funny, fucked-up and profound.

This was my year when I bought and played so many old games. I'd have to say Portal oh shit I didn't play portal before oh shit sue me.
I like the companion cube. I had a strong connection to it. It made Liara or Ellie feel like distant cousins or something. We had lots of things in common. We liked the same music. We saw the same films. We ate square meals. The turrets were kinda cute too. I want one.
If not maybe Lego Star Wars 1, or SSX Tricky (technically I didn't play it for the first time this year but I bought it a month ago for myself and I love it) or Simpsons Hit and Run. A month ago I went to Cex, a second-hand games game, and spent about £30 on loads and loads of PS2 games. Good buy.

I'm going to go with State of Decay or Project Zomboid. Zomboid may be cheating a little as it's been out in alpha form for a few years, but it finally got it's Steam Early Access release this year, so I'm counting it. Both are zombie survival games, but they do it in totally different ways.

State of Decay is originally an XBOX Live title (now on Steam as well) and it's focus is more on fighting than survival, but it's still fun. Full 3D graphics and you play as multiple survivors trying to gather enough supplies to survive. Bites won't kill you, you have health and stamina bars and you'll die if they hit 0.

Zomboid is isometric 3D, so it's got old-style graphics, but it's deapth is extreme. It's buggy, looks awful at times, and has been promising so many things for years now, but it's fun. Fighting in this game is a last resort. Scratches have like a 10% chance to infect you and getting bitten has like a 90% chance. So you stay the hell away as best you can.

Both have base-building. State of Decay is mostly selecting things like medical tents, farm plots, libraries, workshops, storerooms, kitchens, bedrooms, etc to houses that fit into 'slots' in each of the few bases you can choose. Then you can upgrade them with materials, but it's all automatically done - ie you have the resources, click upgrade, and wait for it to finish upgrading. Zomboid, since it's simpler graphics, is you pick up a hammer, nails, and boards (which you either find or cut down trees) and start building. You can build onto any building in the game or just build your own.

... I'd keep talking, but I'm at work and it's almost time to go home. ... ... ...

While there were some really good lesser known or not-so-well received games in 2013, there's only one game I can award this title to: Aliens: Colonial Marines. There graphics were like nothing I've ever seen before and the AI truly unique, I never knew what they would do next. The game perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the Alien franchise into one game and so there is no contender more deserving of GOTY than is A:CM.

Best game I've played this year? Hmm I'm not sure, maybe BioShock 1 or any of the Silent Hill games (I actually only got into Silent Hill in March). Of course Spec Ops: The Line and Resident Evil 4 are high up there, too. Rayman Origins as well. Hmm, this is a tough one, I shouldn't have spent the year playing catch-ups to the 6th/7th generation.

However of 2013 (which I know isn't the point) my GOTY is still Remember Me, followed closely by Rayman Legends and Dead Rising 3. Well done 2013 you actually convinced me to play more than 3 new games.

A toss up between Bioshock Infinite and The Last Of Us.
Seriously, don't make me choose between them.

I did that purposely in order to create a sense of anarchy and disobedience in the thread.

I FINALLY MAKE AN EFFORT TO POST AND YOU CALL ME OUT ON THE TINIEST MISTAKE. FUCK YOU GUYS, I'M GOING BACK TO BEING A LURKER.

Ahem. I haven't really been gaming as much as I should lately. I've been meaning to make a comeback with some Steam Winter sale (When is that, anyway?) but other than that I've just been playing some New Vegas. I'm sorry, I've been a bad indie gamer.

Barring the major AAA titles...

I'd say either Hearthstone or Enemy Within. The former is annoying me right now and the latter is an expansion pack, so it's kind of a dubious twosome.

FUCK ME!? YOU WISH BUDDY!![footnote]Ready when you are ;)[/footnote]

Steam Xmas sale should be sometime around Xmas I imagine, curiously enough, but it's like to be around the 18th-20th since the autumn sale was pretty late this year.

I should get around to adding you on steam.

Tales of Xillia would be my traditional GOTY, but injustice style would be Tales of the Abyss. I heard it was a polarizing title and I ended up on the love it side. The main reason is because the characters are jerks, but they're so well written with development and the dynamics of actually being human.

Also why is Vesperia so much harder than all the others? That would be a contender if I could get past the hunky dory intro they all have (well thieves stealing from slums may not be hunky dory, but based on the other games I'm guessing shit will hit the fan.)

I'm a Blizzard whore, so I'll say Heart of the Swarm. Close second belongs to XCOM: Enemy Within.

Finally played 'Tigershark' for the PC, after loving the PS1 version.

It's just as good, shame the game never got any community behind it.

Barring the AAA, it's gotta be Rogue Legacy. I had SO much fun with that game while it was kicking my ass.

My GOTY is definitely Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. I haven't played anything indie, so I suppose it's all mainstream AAA titles for me this year.

I haven't played many games this year, but out of the 3 that I remember(WWE2K14, Bioshock Infinite, Metro Last Light), I'm going to go with WWE2K14.

Metro was a good game that focused a little to much on stealth for my tastes, but had unbelievably good atmospehere.

Bioshock seemed like Halo with plasmids, and I'm not a fan of Halo(bar the first one).

WWE has kept my attention longer than the other games, so it wins by a margin. The controls are responsive, the character models are excellent, and the roster is huge. I did prefer the Attitude Era mode from WWE13 a bit more than the 30 years of Wrestlemania mode, but the sheer number of matches in WrestleMania mode makes up for it.

EDIT: Also an honorable mention to PAYDAY 2. The gameplay is solid, but the Xbox version is so far behind the PC and PS3 on updates that it's ridiculous. The feeling of pulling off a huge heist with your friends is a feeling that's hard to capture, however.
