I beat Spec Ops: The Line this year, and that's undoubtedly the best game I've played in the past two years... But of games that exclusively came out this year, it's... Actually really tough for me to say. It's kind of a tie between Bioshock Infinite for it's wonderful story and mind-fuckery (to me, at least), and Risk of Rain for it's wonderful gameplay. Papers, Please and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon in a close 3rd and 4th, respectively.

Originally GTA V, but after that I bought and played Ass Creed IV, and it is not only better than the third one. IT is the best assassins creed ever. It is pure awesome sauce.

So yes, Assassins Creed IV.

I'd go with Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag and Saint's Row 4, couple of reasons,
1st: They're fun games that I know I'm going to enjoy every time I play them.
2nd: There the only games that have come out this year that I've played to completion.

(I've spent the last month with FO:New Vegas again!)
You guys really shoud've read the OP properly.

The OP wanted people to exclude AAA games from their answers to this thread.

Sometimes I can't tell if people do this on purpose or not. I'm gonna edit the title though.

Okay so thanks to the last two post I am somewhat clear on the rules of this thing now...kind of
Does that mean excluding all AAA titles? Or just the ones that came out this year?
I must be blind because I still don?t see where it said no AAA titles it just said you don?t have to pick titles from this year.

Um... timidly I will say my none AAA GOTY not from 2013 would either be Jade Empire. Is..is that okay?

EDIT: Now understanding the rules of this thread let me just toss out my origional pick up there, not that I don't really love that game, but Dishonored takes the gold. The stealth was amazingly satisfying in that game and oh my god the world they built holy hell.
I liked the story for what it was. Shame that it ended just when it was truly getting interesting, but hey, the Daud DLC made up for it quite nicely.

Let's see, great games I played for the first time THIS year?

Gnomoria
Dungeons of Dredmor
Deponia
Warlock: Masters of the Arcane

really hard to pick which of those I like best, but I've sunk the MOST hours into Gnomoria, though it's easy to get burnt out on. Dungeons of Dredmor is still loads of fun whether I just have a few minutes to kill or a few hours, it's by far the best roguelike I've EVER played period, so just on account of it being the epitome of it's genre, I'd nominate Dungeons of Dredmor!

If I excluded AAA then I can't vote, as I said the only two games I've played to conclusion that have been released this year have been AAA

I CHOOSE YOU ... Call of Duty Ghosts!

Kidding of course. I shall rewind time to the year of 2006.
This is due to the fact since I have picked up the complete edition of Neverwinter Nights 2 ... and BOY it is a damn good RPG. I mean sure I didn't know this but ... Dragon Age took quite a lot from that game that it almost made me think that i was going to run into a dreaded Mage Tower dream sequence again. D:

... just looking at the Metacritic user reviews for this, it made me laugh. XD

It also didn't have to be released this year, just experienced by you for the first time this year.

I said so, I just said triple A, not AAA.

Barring of course the large triple A titles of the year that most of us have played and were selected as GOTY candidates by every site and major publication.
And it can be an older triple A game if you want, just not one of this years obvious blockbusters.

Edit: Yeah that's fine? I'm not meaning to come off agressive, the aliens avatar isn't helping here.

I'll have to go with... **rustling paper as he checks calendar** Uhhhh.... Oh wait you said ANY time... ok. Easily the Mount & Blade series. I'd never had much experience with those games, but I picked them up on a good sale at some point in the last year and finally broke down to play them. It is reminiscent of Bladestorm: The 100 Years War but with a free-roam map and the RPG elements. Reminds me of a D&D campaign I ran that involved PC's having their own warbands and large scale battles, also feels like a 3rd person version of Medieval: Total War.
Second contender is FTL. I didn't have much, if any experience with the rogue-like genre of gaming and after playing FTL, its given me a warm fuzzy feeling. Knowing that games don't have to be huge productions and elaborate settings/stories just makes me happy for some reason.
Also honorable mentions to Organ Trail (seriously, I can't tell you how much I love the idea of an Oregon Trail taken into modern day zombie apocalypse culture) and ARMA II for showing me what a modern FPS SHOULD look like.

This year has been pretty lacking in the game releases for me, so I spent most of my time playing some older games of the PS2 library. This is also the year I started and beaten the MGS games, and I think MGS 3 has been my game of the year. I did play the HD version on my xbox 360. I was just amazing to me how fresh that game felt, even though the game was nine years old.

from the game that were released this year, I would probably say something like Rogue Legacy or Papers Please. The only AAA title I really enjoyed was Injustice, but I stopped playing that one awhile ago.
Metal gear solid 3 is almost the definition of a classic, I adore that game, easily going to sit in my top 3 for many years to come.

It's like if MGS had a coherent story and a guy with bees.

Honestly, it's been a good year for Cyberpunk in the media. And as such, I am compelled to say Shadowrun returns. It rocked my world.

This would require me to actually remember all of the games I've experienced for the first time this year.

I dunno, the games I've played most extensively this year have probably been DmC, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, and Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance. The games that have made me laugh and go "Oh you guys!" the most would be Divinity II and Divinity: Dragon Commander, though I technically first played DII about a year ago and stopped roughly halfway through the base game. Though I did play Warcraft III for the first time this year, and from the point of view of a long-time World of Warcraft player, it's amazing seeing all of that stuff from a current rather than past perspective. I need to continue playing those campaigns.

While there were some really good lesser known or not-so-well received games in 2013, there's only one game I can award this title to: Aliens: Colonial Marines. There graphics were like nothing I've ever seen before and the AI truly unique, I never knew what they would do next. The game perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the Alien franchise into one game and so there is no contender more deserving of GOTY than is A:CM.
While I realize this is supposed to be an ironic thread or whatever...I'm pretty sure signing with A:CM being goty is trolling in any known universe. At least is should be -_-' . Even ironically...its not even bad in such a way to be funny...its just a disgrace.

My "goty"? I dont really have an ironic one, I usually do research before playing something, so I'm rarely extremely disappointed. I'm just sad someone brought up A:CM again.

off topic: Captcha: dear cookie.

I wanted to answer: jackpot. I think I've been watching too much family guy.

I'd have to go with FTL Faster Than Light for my GOTY. It's probably somewhere in the top ten games I've ever played. I've never enjoyed getting my ass handed to me so often this much, it just keeps me coming back for more again and again. And because it's getting a free expansion in January it could well end up as my GOTY for next year as well. 100+ hours of entertainment for 10 quid. Flawless victory.

EDIT. Forgot to give honourable mentions to Divine Divinity and King's Bounty The Legend, two old games I picked up and played for the first time this year and was charmed by. If you've never tried them either and you like RPG's then I heartily recommend you give them a go.

Max Payne 2. Played the first in December of last year, loved it, then grabbed that one in the Steam Christmas sale - fun gameplay, engaging story, and one of the few videogames with a really solid endings.
I freakin' love Max Payne 2. One of the best games I've played, and since I replayed it this year it qualifies.

Other than that, Gunpoint. That game be so good.

I wanna say Persona 4 Golden but someone already did, and that game would just take my GOTC award (Game of a Century).
My non AAA GOTY for 2013 is:

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance.

Its flawed, the inventory system is horrid, its short, stealth sections are pointless, and the zan datsu system wasn't very deep.
But God Almighty this game has that Platinum pizzaz to it. While I wait for Bayonetta 2 I get to play a unique attempt at a Metal Gear hacknslash that can only get amazing once a sequel arrives. It also has some of the most cinematically impressive boss fights all year, the best soundtrack hands down of the year, has some fun gameplay and crunch to the combat, a stupid yet fun to watch story with some of the greatest characters to come out of the series, and for its length I still enjoyed it for what it is.

And then theres the final boss. 11/10 Would vote for.

Being a massive fan of shadow of the colossus, I finally managed to get my hands on a copy of Ico this year. I was not disappointed.

Either that or Zelda: minish cap, which has since become my favorite 2-D Zelda game.

A free demo that came with the Shadow Warrior remake, I enjoyed it more than the game it came with.

Well, since you so callously ruled out the current vehicle of my Pokemon obsession, this is easy, since I haven't actually played too many games for the first time this year (it doesn't help that I went out and bought Bioshock 1 months ago, and haven't yet gotten around to actually playing it). Borderlands 2 takes it over Skyrim, because I'm a sucker for FPSes and BL2 is a pretty darn good one. It's just fun to play, striking a nice balance where you never feel like you're bashing your head against a wall (although I did appreciate the creative strategies I ended up having to employ to get past certain obstacles in Skyrim, the lead-up sucked), but rarely feel like you're just steamrolling things with no effort (unless you happen to go back to an area you beat a while ago, which for me is basically just when I want to run over some Bullymongs/whatever name they're going by at this particular moment). So yeah, Borderlands 2 is my (non-Pokemon) game of the year, and it's the first game I'm going to take the time to actually beat once college gets out for the semester.
