It's the zombie apocalypse and you have your trusty shotgun handy, but what's your backup weapon?

Sword? What kind?
Club?
Combat knife?

What would you want to swing at the zombie hordes when you run out of bullets?

A 2x4 just like the rock.

Well seriously it would have to be a sword. Something choppy not stabby. Stabby would be bad against a horde of Zombies.

Those fold up, so that could be nice. But having broken a couple I have to say they would just not hold up to abuse they would take when applied to zombie heads.

The M6D, from the original Halo. From Halopedia:

The M6D uses 12.7x40mm M225 SAPHE (Semi Armor Piercing High Explosive) magnum loads. These rounds have a jacket of copper or cupro-nickel around the projectile while the projectile itself is hollow and filled with an explosive compound and a delayed-detonation impact fuse. When the round impacts a target, the jacket will initially help the projectile maintain its shape, allowing it to travel into the target before detonating almost immediately after impact, causing massive tissue damage and system shock. Semi-armor piercing rounds are more effective against infantry targets as compared to armor piercing rounds due to the massive KE dump and catastrophic system damage caused by internally-fracturing rounds, and have the added bonus of posing less risk to friendlies and noncombatants in the vicinity of the target. The explosive properties of the rounds also render them decently effective against personal shielding systems and are capable of damaging lightly-armored vehicles.

A pistol, with a scope, that is as accurate as a rifle, with exploding bullets. Fuck yes.

EDIT:

That doesn't seem physically possible!

Ahhhh Conker Live and Reloaded. Good times and memories. I preferred the multiplayer from the original though.

That depends a great deal on the type of Zombies in this apocalypse. Are they 28 Days/Weeks Later-slash-Left4Dead Fast Zombies, or Dead Rising slow zombies, with strength in numbers?

For both cases (assuming this secondary weapon can't be a firearm), a katana should be able to hold up well. It's light, so exhaustion wouldn't be an issue, and cuts well, presuming you have a battle-ready blade. But to combine a practical secondary usage into this secondary weapon, the Crowbar takes it. (Go Gordon Freeman!)

Holds up well less likly to get stuck and the acid part will keep it sharper longer.
